Man oh man. I'm loving it.

I'm a simpleton and I'm loving the FPS and graphics I get with my early 2009 white macbook.

Can't wait for other games to come through!

I tend to run games at lower than native res .. Usually around 720p.. which bumps the speed significantly but wow… I can see a *big* FPS hit.. Had to bump a few settings down on Portal, but it's still a good start. Very playable on my 9600m MBP.

I can see why TF2, L4D (and Killing Floor) aren't up yet if this is to be expected across the board.. This sort of slowdown could cripple L4D/KF. Its not necessarily all Apple's fault either.. I suspect there's a bit of optimisation left for Valve to do too.

It worked fine after I deleted local content and re-downloaded. Hopefully that fixes it for others as well. :)

Ah, i remember now why I gave up on PC games. Blah blah, video card not supported - crashes a lot, sluggish, DRM blah blah. Steam really have brought the PC experience to Mac! Way to go!

I'll find out how well my Mac Mini with 9400m plays games... (I really want a minitower Apple, or at least a desktop computer that isn't $2500 with a halfway-decent graphics card :()
Oh! Snap!

Suddenly the lack of a machine with an upgradeable graphics card that doesn't cost an arm and a leg becomes obvious to the Apple masses. Some of us asked for a lower cost midtower years ago, and everyone said we weren't in Apple's market target, we were asking too much, etc. Now what, kool-aid drinkers?

/me goes back to downloading Portal on his $900 Corei7 gaming PC.

Oh, and I just got, "Steam servers are too busy right now, try later." No, if I wanted to try later, I wouldn't have sat down at my computer NOW! GRRRRRRR!

Oh, and you know how Apple are down on Adobe products - I'm not surprised. The Steam portal I brelieve is using Adobe Air - basicly locally executing Flash.
Currently the Steam portal is the single biggest app running on my PC, just downloading a game - 20%CPU, 250MB RAM used just for the friggin portal. I think we have a new contender for the bloatware crown, and I thought iTunes would be hard to beat.

To be fair I've never had problems with any of those things in Windows. :)

That's not flamebait either, this is an important first step - Steam on Windows is absolutely solid for me and always has been but I wouldn't expect the Mac version and its games to be perfect from day one.

If it wasn't for Steam I would've ditched Windows completely a long time ago.

Not responding

while : ; do

Downloaded Steam client
Updated itself
Just hanging there and marked "not responding" in the process list
Force Quit
Restarted Steam Client
Just hanging there and marked "not responding" in the process list
Removed everything

done

WTF? Anyone an idea?

Ugh....what did you idiots expect. The EXACT same performance as Windows drivers? Steam for Mac has just been released. Give it some time. Sure it's not as great as we all expected but this is simply a stepping stone towards greater things. GET OVER IT!

Tru dat.

And there's nothing wrong with the Steam servers. I just got done downloading Portal and it came down at around 21 Mbps for me.

Honestly, why do people feel the need to wade in with stupid opening comments? Is it some attempt at self gratification? Do you feel "big" by calling people "idiots" from behind your monitor? There's a constructive way to comment and disagree, but screaming "idiots" just comes off as extremely petty.

Anyway, if you're actually interested in an adult conversation, here goes ...

People are here to share views and opinions, and while Steam for the Mac has indeed just been released, it's hardly rocket science that genuine support for gaming, on the Mac, from Apple is non existent. Also, expecting Valve to sort this on their own is a non starter, because the OS needs to have graphics support built in much like Windows has the likes of Direct X.

Apple never intended for the Mac to run graphic intense games, but with the arrival of Steam hopefully they'll sit up and take notice. If they don't and the performance pales in comparison to Windows versions, then the sales will drop and Valve could be within their rights to simply drop support because of a lack of interest.

Valve can't do it all on their own.

Apparently according to valve the Apple OpenGL drivers for OSX are absolutely slipshod, hence the low FPS AND the fact that any of the GMA950/Nvidia7 series cards aren't supported.

No, they really haven't ... seriously.

I know it's the first release, but it's horrendously buggy ... is there any need for the scrolling to be so rough and juddery while looking through the list of games?

On Windows the Steam interface is fluid, and it's identical in terms of looks on the Mac version, but this just feels a little too rushed for my liking.

Crossover Steam Conflict

Hi All, just wondering if anyone can help me - I have previously used Steam via CrossOver Games... now when I click on a link within Mac Steam, eg "View Details" on my current torchlight download, it tries to load my CrossOver Steam version.

Anyone know how I can fix this?

Note for everyone (assuming this hasn't been mentioned):
Turn off color correction. It makes everything blurry.

I have the same issue with the steam image being corrupt. I've downloaded it multiple times from both Safari and Firefox. I've opened the images multiple times with both disk image, disk mount and toast. The apple apps don't let it pass the verification stage and toast mounts it but then says the file is not complete and can't be copied. I've restarted my computer and I've checked for all updated (running snow lepard 10.6.3). Oh and I've found several different links on Steam's sight to download from. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is Civilization any good? I'm tempted...
Anything like Age of Empires?

Civ is fantastic and nothing like AoE. Civ is a turn based game. Read up on it. I still play it from time to time because it's that good.

Torchlight rocks! It's like an updated version of Diablo. Very happy with it.

Portal downloaded but haven't tried it yet.

As for general performance I'm not expecting much right now but hoping for better optimization over time. Steam is a huge step forward for those of us who want games on our mac and therefore I welcome it. I'd love to be able to abandon my Win 7 partition permanently someday.

I agree, maybe this will be a wake up call to Apple, to improve the graphics drivers. And yeah indeed, we can't expect the ported games to have the same performance on our macs, as they have on windows.

The expectations from Steam are high, and I think that if it works out well, Valve will update the games, to improve performance.
