lucky you. Mine is going between 80-100 b/s. Not Kb/s, b/s
I don't know about you guys, mine is going at 600-850KB/s. 20% done in <10 min.

Ya I just switched over to windows and downloaded portal there, similar issue to yours.
I can't get Portal to even show up in my Library. I click the 'Free Portal' link from the front page, then click on the "GET PORTAL NOW" button, it simply either gives me a blank screen, or brings me back to the same page. I was able to go in a different way (where it asked me to login - AGAIN - and said that my registration was successful and to go to my Library. The linked button was dead, and of course, there was no game in my Library!
Threw it away within 5 minutes of downloading it after finding out that whenever I clicked "Get Portal Free" it just took me to a blank page that never loaded, if that problem is fixed i'll give it a try.
Done that numerous times. I don't even get error messages about the server being busy or anything like that. Just dead links, redirects to pages I've already been to or most often, nothing.
Valve, epic fail. Quelle surprise!
I was having the same problem when I first installed. I also rebooted my MBP. Perhaps that will help?
Update: Took 2 hrs to download. LATER!!
That was annoying. Luckily, there were a few other links to start the download.
I've been downloading it for 4+ hours.
Yeah, it has paused itself a few times for me as well. I was able to resume though.
Tried that.. it was on 2 (recommended) I tried one, 3 and 4.. All left me with a black vortex.. Which makes it terrifying. A leap of faith every time. I'll try it with the 9400m and see if its my install or choice of GPU.
Have you found a solution? Same problem on a Mac Pro

Downloaded the Client and update, but Portal just gives me a blank page. Oh well, maybe tomorrow.
Steam downloaded fine for me and Portal took about 1 hour to download. The download was supspended a few times but it downloaded and installed nevertheless.
I got up to Level 8 in Portal and I am already bored with it. I guess I will switch over to Windows Bootcamp and play some COD MW2.

Yeah, I'm trying to download the Portal game and it's just a blank screen. I've tried about 10 times but without any luck and a blank screen. I'll just let it sit there until it does something.

Had the same problem. Seems like the software goes nutty but still acquires a license for the game. Try clicking the "Games" menu and go to "View Games Library". From there you can download the game. Worked for me.
