Maybe because this trailor was made in 1984 and Ghostbusters was one of thie biggist movies of that year. I have nothing against Star Wars but Return of the Jedi came out in 1983 not 1984. I don't know what years the other two movies came out.

I don't even know why you bother to explain...it's funny how some of the youngsters here wished for Apple to shoot an internal corporate movie in 1984 based on 2012 movie trends and cultural tastes...

Kill Or Be Killed

The title of the 1984 cinematic masterpiece was "Ghostbusters." There were four ghostbusters, Dr. Peter Venkman, Dr. Raymond Stantz, Dr. Egon Spengler, and Winston Zeddmore, not just one "ghostbuster."

"Hey you know that movie that is going to come out in five years? We should spoof it."

Really?
WTF

See my other responses. Typo. Enjoy.

That is actually really clever, its catchy and recognizable because of the ghostbusters spin off but also making a point against IBM (I'm assuming that is big blue lmao)

Wow! Brings back memories of making video spoofs. So much fun back then - despite the weight and ungainliness of the shoulder-mounted "portable" cameras.

I had a 1982 IBM PC and the sight of the instruction manual in the video almost made me break out in hives - the hours I spent with that thing!

As a few others pointed out - Ghostbusters was huge! They tied in with quite a few major companies on promotional materials...my favorite was the glow in the dark Ghostbuster/FujiFilm t-shirts. Kids went crazy for them.

Ok

But Now Apple is the most evil sue happy corporation in America. They have become everything they used to stand against.

A great truth struck me when reading Isaacson's bio.

Revolutionaries claim they want to end oppression; the truth is they only want to change who is doing the oppressing.

Nope, they should've woken up and realized that MS was the true enemy back then...not IBM.

Steve was always fixated on hardware. And up until the PS/2 launch around '87, IBM dominated the hardware market all the clones had tiny market share.

Often true.

Jobs used to make derisive remarks about carriers and their walled gardens.

Turned out, he simply wanted to move their customers into his own walled garden.

True and true. :)

Assuming Blue is IBM, IBM is still doing pretty well for themselves, just in a different area of computing than Apple these days. IBM is definetly a leader today in the innovation of advanced computing technologies, especially considering Digital Equipment Corporation is no longer in the picture. Microsoft is sort of following IBM's path, but with software only. Apple is making a strong move into the consumer market, which is probably what Steve Jobs always had in mind from the beginning. Maybe the three can live in perfect harmony. Not sure about Google though.

As for the video, I thought it was silly funny. I imagine that I would have been rofl if I was there while they were writing the script.

This story has made the Bloomberg ticker. I am not sure about the comparison to /., but I suspect the audience is a whole bunch wider and a whole lot less likely to overburden some website or write some abstract code.

They probably want to start an ETF or something. :D

Rocketman

:apple:

Speaking as someone who works in this part of the video-production industry: You all have no idea.

Thanks to the internet there are now many of these things leaking out, but there are still a ton that stay hidden. I'm betting every CEO in America has something more awkward than this hidden away somewhere. I was responsible for a couple of them!

I think I saved an internal Dell video of Michael Dell and several senior level Dell execs rapping to LL Cool J's Mama said Knock You Out... No joke. :)

For me it was the 1984 commercial and his obsession with IBM that illustrated it best but your observation illustrates it well too.

When I look back on the 1984 commercial the 2nd coming keynote speeches is what comes to mind, and how he must have viewed the audience he carefully molded in his hands as sheep. He wanted to bring down Big Brother but only to supplant him.

Lots of company do this. When I was at Best Buy the CEO used to do a bit with the "Shrink Stopper" and at CompUSA the CEO frequently sent these silly videos out. This is SOP for businesses to use Executives in weird or comedic ways to try and make employees feel like they are cool, normal, or care. We all know they don't, Steve included.
