iPhone OS 4 Compatibility
Just in case there was any doubt regarding Apple's plans to not support the original iPhone with iPhone OS 4, Apple CEO Steve Jobs has now weighed in on the matter with one of his typically terse emails. MacStories reports that a Twitter user sent an email to Jobs asking about future support for the original iPhone, to which Jobs responded "Sorry, no."

Apple's preview page for iPhone OS 4 also omits compatibility for the first-generation iPod touch. The iPhone 3G and second-generation iPod touch (which includes the 8 GB model still available for sale today) will be compatible with iPhone OS 4, but will lack support for certain features such as multitasking. Only the iPhone 3GS and third-generation iPod touch (and future hardware) will support all of the features of iPhone OS 4.

Well, that sucks for them. But iPhone OS 3 won't suddenly break as soon as 4 comes out, or anything. You buy a phone because of what it CAN do, not what it can't or might one day be able to do.

And hey — he said "sorry"!

More than expected and perfectly normal, considering that Apple has actually been one of the few phone makers providing unusually extended support to all its devices.

In any case, the original iPhone continues to be absolutely functional with iPhone OS 3.0...to expect otherwise is the same as presume that G3 Macs should run SL.

I get it. We have to upgrade.

I am an original iPhone user and I am not bitter about this.

I understand it's just business.

The first gen iPhone is starting to show it's age; I doubt it's hardware could support the upgrade.

Time to move on. You can still use your first-gen iPhone, but there are just too many reasons to upgrade.

Apple doesn't like to hang on to legacy-ware, and at the end of the day it's a good thing.

I'm not too shaken up about it. My iPhone is slowing down enough in newer apps that I don't think multitasking would have been worth it anyway.

I don't think this a big deal at all. Typical for the smartphone market. I can't put the Blackberry Bold OS onto an older Blackberry 8830 and those two models were two or so years apart. This is a non-issue.

Positive in my opinion, by dropping support for outdated pieces of technology is what allows for greater progess

Aha?
Do you think the iPhone 3G has better hardware?
No.
iPhone 2G = iPhone 3G
-> There is NO technical reason for that lack of support!

boooo!!!! my 1G iPod Touch is going to cry!!!!!!:(:(

we don't see why Cupertino couldn't at least allow for an iPod touch-style paid upgrade, especially since the upgradeable iPhone 3G runs essentially the same hardware.

Looks like I'll be upgrading my iPhone this year. I hope Apple puts in an ARM A9 proc in it, but doubt they will since the iPad has only an A8.

If Apple releases a 17" MacBook Pro w/ an i7 proc soon, I might get that, too.

Might get some extra goodies like maybe an elGato Turbo.264 HD USB thing, and an external Blu-Ray burner. My cousin's getting married this summer & I want to make a slideshow of pictures. Hopefully this stuff will speed it up & make it prettier.

"Thanks for paying $600 for the first iPhone back when we began. We now wanted to say, since the price has dropped $400 for the same model, we'd like to also drop you, and ram a pole through your mouth, in your intestine, and out the other side. Have an awesome day." - Steve-o & Co.

In all seriousness, I understand him. It's time to update for me anyway. My phone has cooked it Wifi chip, and now only works off Edge. In its defense though, it is 2 and a half years old. I want to upgrade anyhow, and it'll still continue to work. It's fine I guess.

Sucks for those device owners.

At some point all companies stop supporting their older products - whether for technical reasons or otherwise -

"Give us more money"

:D

iPhone, et al.

Kudos MacRumors forum posters, the last two forum posts are full reasonable and positive feedback, with very little rant and rave-us fanboys might be growing up, eh?
:p

Better hardware in a consumer viewpoint; 3g Connectivity is better than the 2g option.

some of the features like iAd will kill AT&T's EDGE network. i bet AT&T told Apple to kill this upgrade so they could be one step closer to upgrading what remains of EDGE

and my wife's 3G is laggy with 3.1.3 compared to my 3GS. i bet OS4 would kill the original iPhone

the CPU (or SOC in this case) is not the only component in the device. The hardware is clearly not the same, or the touch would be able to make calls, etc...

I'm actually excited for this because it gives me a good reason to get a new iPhone with 16GB. :D I can't wait to see the fourth-gen iPhone if it is worth paying more than the iPhone 3GS after an inevitable price drop.
