I think if a smartphone is supported for about three years, it would be fair to both the manufacturer and consumer (for _me_ at least). Better put, at this time, if I can get 3 good years of use in a smartphone, it would be nice.

I get it. We have to upgrade.

I am an original iPhone user and I am not bitter about this.

I understand it's just business.

The first gen iPhone is starting to show it's age; I doubt it's hardware could support the upgrade.

While the original iPhone and iPhone 3G sport the same hardware (specification wise anyway), there's some fundamental difference between them that makes the 3G capable of being faster.

take an original top spec (8GB) iPhone and run it next to an iPhone 3G, open the same application, do the same things, and you'll see the iPhone 3G is marginally faster doing processor specific things.

I'd have to imagine the cause of this is a difference in logic board and how it handles things or how it has been optimized.

Positive in my opinion, by dropping support for outdated pieces of technology is what allows for greater progess

Except that the original iPhone is the same specs as the 3G minus the 3G of course. The only reason they aren't offering the same support for the original as the 3G is because they want more money. Don't fool yourself into thinking it encourages progress.

the CPU (or SOC in this case) is not the only component in the device.

It is the same hardware

Same SoC! All have 128MB Ram!

The hardware is clearly not the same, or the touch would be able to make calls, etc...
UMTS, GPS doesn't matter.

Better hardware in a consumer viewpoint; 3g Connectivity is better than the 2g option.
Yes. But this makes no difference for the OS!
(we have also the iPod Touch)

don't know how much of the decision is technical and how much is marketing/politics, but it seems like pretty much standard pocedure for all companies.
New products have better specs than old ones and do more things better.

this is of course regarding OS4, i i think it's fine. but i imagine apple will still support the older phones running the system they were designed for.
or is that not the case? if you have the ild iphone and it has problems running OS3, do you still have access to support?

Besides MULTI-Tasking what else can't the iPhone 3G do? Is there a reason to upgrade to OS 4.0 for 3G owners ?

How much will OS 4.0 cost??

Well my 3G is starting to get long in the tooth anyway, so heres hoping a hardware refresh in the Summer along with OS4.

As for support for the first gen iPhone. It isn't all that bad. 3.0 didn't add support for mms and then the 3G iPhone didn't get a few features the 3Gs received. So now, 4.0 doesn't support multitasking for 3G phones where as 3Gs gets the whole hog. I think we can presume that for future phones aswell and OS's, each OS will support upto 3 generations of phones. I think that's fair to say?

Running a freshly restored iPhone vs a freshly restored iPhone 3G running the same firmware is identical. I've tried it side by side. The iPhone 3G is not faster, it's the same. Trust me.

By the way... "Top Spec" is not 8GB, it's 16GB.

This is expected and shouldn't be a shock to anyone ... up until the iphone, most people upgraded their their cell phones every 6 months - year ... Hell, i bought my 3G at launch almost 2 years ago and I'm really looking forward to upgrading it with the new rumored iphone HD release this june. I know money doesnt grow on trees, but I sure alot of original iphone owners are ready to upgrade as well.

This is bull. As has been said before, the iPhone 2G = 3G in terms of hardware so there is no technical reason not to support it. Apple did it just to force first gen owner to finally jump the gun and get the new iPhone HD come this summer.

I predict hacked version of OS 4.0 for first gen iPhone and iPod Touches to come out.

Mark my words.

No one knows. Apple hasn't announced pricing.

If you go by what they've done in the past, it would be likely that iPhone OS 4.0 is a free upgrade for iPhone users and a paid upgrade for iPod touch users (maybe $10).

Whether or not the new OS is worth the upgrade for iPhone 3G owners will be up to the individual. Some will find that one of the new features to be worth it. Others will not. If I recall correctly, you are not required to upgrade your iPhone software.

For computers, I would expect longer support.

For the smartphone market, 2 years -- the same as most contracts -- makes sense. When my 2 year contract is up, I will more than likely upgrade to the newer model for a new 2 year contract.

Every iPhone out there is a walking demo for the platform. If a potential iPhone convert sees 4.0 running on a 1st gen, and it's a sluggish crappy experience, that gives them a negative impression - even if they know new ones are faster.

There's no technical reason the newer iMovie doesn't run on a G4 either - in fact it can be hacked to run - but the perfomance is terrible and thus the customer experience is bad.

Part of Apple's strategy is to control the overall experience of the brand. It's not just about selling new hardware.

I'm not really getting why this is such a big deal? By the time 4.0 comes out the original iPhone will be over three years old. This is one and a half times the contract length in the US and two or maybe even three times the average contract length in Europe.

Most users will have already upgraded thief hardware. People, especially the tech savvy rarely keep the same phone for more than 12 months, let alone three years!

Plus. Just because Apple have offered OS upgrades in the past does not mean you can take it for granted. Other vendors may offer 'fixes' but few other entirely new features on mobiles without the need to upgrade hardware.

This shouldn't even be news. That model is almost 3 years old...of course it's not being updated!

Apple just fueling the cash cow by stopping support for a phone. It's BS but fanboys will find a way to defend the fruit.

Negative votes are ridiculous but expected with the freetome generation. I have a 3G that will be two years old this summer and will be replaced with the 3GSX or whatever the new iPhone is called.

Ok, so my original iPod cannot be updated...so what? It still works. It's over 2 1/2 years old. I'm ok with that. I really hope this doesn't turn into a bitch-fest about how its not supported.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

iPhone 1st gen = iPhone 2nd gen (in terms of hardware)

It makes sense, same reason why Microsoft dropped Xbox Live for the original Xbox, it was keeping them from upgrading certain feature of XBL for the 360.
