I'm OK with this. I love my 2g but it is beginning to slow down a bit. Heck my sons have gone through 2 or 3 phones in the same period of time.

It's time to put it back in its original box and wrappings, and in a few years, it will fetch a pretty good price as a collectible.

What's next?

Every iPhone out there is a walking demo for the platform. If a potential iPhone convert sees 4.0 running on a 1st gen, and it's a sluggish crappy experience, that gives them a negative impression - even if they know new ones are faster.

There's no technical reason the newer iMovie doesn't run on a G4 either - in fact it can be hacked to run - but the perfomance is terrible and thus the customer experience is bad.

Part of Apple's strategy is to control the overall experience of the brand. It's not just about selling new hardware.

Apple didn't seem that bothered when 3.0 slowed down the 3G!

I get it. We have to upgrade.

I am an original iPhone user and I am not bitter about this.

I understand it's just business.

The first gen iPhone is starting to show it's age; I doubt it's hardware could support the upgrade.

With the exception of the 3G radio, the iPhone 2G and the iPhone 3G have identical hardware. If the 3G can support 4.0, the 2G can. It's about money, plain and simple.

Fine with me. Don't let old hardware hold you back from making progress. Much like the 360 rocking a DVD drive. If your still using a 2G, 1. idk how you can do it (slower network, no mms) and 2. it's really time to upgrade. Should have gotten a 3GS if you originally signed up for 2 yrs when the original iPhone came out.

Negative votes are ridiculous but expected with the freetome generation. I have a 3G that will be two years old this summer and will be replaced with the 3GSX or whatever the new iPhone is called.

And your old iPhone stops working when iPhone OS4 is out and is garbage?

Besides MULTI-Tasking what else can't the iPhone 3G do? Is there a reason to upgrade to OS 4.0 for 3G owners ?

How much will OS 4.0 cost??

All iPhone OS upgrades are free.

I have a 3G as well. There are plenty of new features in OS 4.0 such as folders, consolidated mail, even little features like a main screen wallpaper... But coming with the release of OS 4.0 is also allegedly a new iPhone... and that's right in time for my upgrade... so I cannot wait.

Lack of Future Support etc.

Has there been any word on other features that will not work on the 3G besides multi-tasking? I am curious to see what else they leave out.

I think if a smartphone is supported for about three years, it would be fair to both the manufacturer and consumer (for _me_ at least). Better put, at this time, if I can get 3 good years of use in a smartphone, it would be nice.

P.

The 3G will still be supported after OS 4.0 comes out and will also run almost all the features of 4.0 except for multitasking which the hardware can't support. So the 3G is still viable, it just isn't the latest and greatest.

That's like saying that a computer isn't supported anymore or can't get tech support because it doesn't have or can't run the most recent OS.

Sucks!!!!.....

that really sucks!:( means that i better get ready for the new iphone, cuz im gonna get it:D cant wait

Maybe MR could post another front-page story on this tomorrow, too.

out with the old, in with the new.

First off, I love your name.

Second... I'm somewhat proud of the iCommunity not ripping everyone else's faces off by bitching about the support drop. This seems a lot more tame compared to the PPC drop.

I'm actually in the group that was pissed about the PPC drop, but could care less about dropping the first gen iPhone. Everyone who got them should be out of or almost out of contract anyway, right? I think it's totally time to upgrade, because that's what I plan on doing this summer.

Apple does this all the time. And each time you get the same little group of users moaning about it. Apple has nonetheless moved forward each time with a very satisfied customer base.

Let's can the moaning, please. It'll get you NOWHERE.

And your old iPhone stops working when iPhone OS4 is out and is garbage?

WHAT?!?

My old iPhone 3G will still work, will still run 4.0, everything except for multitasking, and is not garbage. I can probably still sell it for $50. However, I will be due for a new iPhone and will be looking to get this summer's hardware upgrade.

Aha?
Do you think the iPhone 3G has better hardware?
No.
iPhone 2G = iPhone 3G
-> There is NO technical reason for that lack of support!

As a programmer for iPhone apps and games I can promise you iPhone 1st Gen does NOT equal the iPhone 3G

we don't see why Cupertino couldn't at least allow for an iPod touch-style paid upgrade, especially since the upgradeable iPhone 3G runs essentially the same hardware. And let's not forget that first-gen iPhone owners paid more or less full price for their devices, so if this is true, Apple's summarily dead-ended a $400 phone just under three years after it launched.

I believe this is a good move, means Apple (and other companies) can focus more of their work for the more powerful models, rather than having to make alternatives/watch out for processing power, RAM usage etc.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

iPhone 1st gen = iPhone 2nd gen (in terms of hardware)

And that hardware is so terrible and so slow, it needs to be cut too. But obviously they have to pay at least a little deference to consumers who purchased something so new.

So why do they support the iPhone 3G?
