Its clear that not many company could compete with Apple on a $499 price point without going small screen. I think apple used up all the 10inch screens with a good price point. Other companies have to pay a premium to get bigger screens. I think it shows, Apple's forward thinking, they don't release any product without accumulating enough components. Other companies are just scrambling to match Apple's offering.

Apple may release 7" increase in future, but not at this time, I don't see why apple wants to invest in 3 different screens. Once they consolidate on iPad and iPhone to iOS 4.2, they may expand. Right now, I don't see that is a priority for apple to go for 7" inch screen.

Sounds to me like Apple has given up on resolution independence.

Personally, I would look forward to having a 7" tablet (at half the weight of an iPad) to keep by my bed for midnight web surfing. 10" is too big, and 3.5" is too small for this purpose.

All sizes have their places for different people.

I don't think resolution independence is actually a panacea in this particular situation. Having graphics automatically scale would be helpful but coping with 3 different screen sizes off-line seems feasible. I'd say that resolution independence is much more important on the Android size where there is much more variety in screen sizes.

I think the bigger challenge is actually in redesigning UIs to cope with the change in physical size between a 7" and 10" iPad. If you keep the controls at a sensible, touchable size then it is simply not possible to fit as many on a 7" screen.

 The iPhone is smaller than 7" and there's not much it can't do.

If clicking things is difficult on 7", it must really hard on on a 3.5 inch.

Now, now, don't go bringing logic into this discussion.

I was waiting for a smaller iPad - but since one isn't coming, I'll see what the upcoming Android-based tablets are like.

If the competitive tablets take off, Steve will find a way to reverse course. He always does, and no one ever remembers that he ever declared otherwise. We've always been at war with Eastasia, as it were.

That about sums up where I stand. Oh well. Still interesting in what v2 will offer although I'm going to look at other manufactures.

It is; that's why I don't own an iPhone or iPod Touch. They're worthless for my needs. I have three 7" tablets here from various Chinese mfrs. They suck. Way too small to be useful (and of a quality you'd expect from a CrackerJack box).

The tablet market truly is -only- the iPad. The rest are just awful pieces of trash. But don't believe me...go out and buy one...I dare you.

My colleague's iPad is very nice, but all things considered is too big for my liking.

It all depends what you want a tablet for. Personally I want one that's portable, and by this I mean will fit in a coat pocket rather than having to carry a bag to keep it with you, is functional as an e-reader, internet browser and capable of playing music and games such as Scrabble.

A 7" tablet fits the bill in this regard. My iPhone and HTC Desire are ok for web browsing, Facebooking and so on while on the move, fit in my pocket and the iPhone is excellent at playing music (insert rant on no gapless mp3 playback on Android here), but they're too small to read text on for any length of time.

Something the size of a paperback is ideal because guess what? Paperbacks have been around for decades and are designed to be read by people on the move! The text is printed at a size that is easily read and it fits in your coat pocket! Amazing!

There is definitely a market for 7" tablets, regardless of what Steve wants you to believe.

Yup, a 7 inch tablet fits in a coat pocket, cargo pants, and all of the great places a novel is carried. I'm a SJ fan, but this line of reasoning is just BS.

The irony in his statement is that he's also dissing the iPhone now, but of course he knows the Apple fanatic retards won't notice that. "Too small for apps, eh?" Well, doesn't Apple make a smaller iPad...oh yea, it's called iPhone and iPod. Way to go.
He's talking about tablets and tablet usage. This is why we would switch over to a tablet from our phones for browsing in our living rooms, if we wanted to. He's talking about the motivation for an immediate want for the tablet form factor. A 7 is close enough to a 3.5 in his opinion to not motivate that kind of switch.

If the iPad is just a big iPod Touch, then the 7" iPad is that much closer to that sentiment because it fails that much more in surpassing its design parent (the Phone). The point of the tablet is the comparitively big screen. That's his point.

Don't get too caught up on the literals, or your vitriol for how he chooses to express himself.

Thank goodness he put that idiotic rumor to rest. A seven inch iPad is almost as dumb as a back-facing camera on an iPad.

Some dummies don't think out their predictions very well. Common sense tells us that some ideas would not happen because they are just non-functional and stupid.

I always felt that a 7" was going to be too small and hoped Apple wouldn't make it alongside a 10" model. There are too many devices running different resolutions now. Older iPhones and iPod touches, iPod 4 and the iPad, all use different resolutions. Devs would have to make and optimize for too many display defaults.

Having 2 different iPad sizes would have been too confusing for people. The iPad is fine the way it is (waiting for the refresh myself).
:apple::):apple:

For once I wholeheartedly agree with Steve. 10 inch should be minimum for ipad. Even 10 inches is not that big for a tablet. What is the 7 inch tablet suppose to achieve? It fills a gap in size but not functionality.

What about the iPhone?

There are clear limits to how close elements can be on the screen before users can't touch accurately. We believe 10-inch screen is minimum necessary.

Uhhhh... If seven inches is too small, how does my iPhone work? If you can make that crappy keyboard work, you can make a seven inch tablet work.

Apple usually buys all the available components and then nobody else gets a hold of them until it's too late, they started doing it with the 2nd Generation iPod and the Flash Memory...it's a good policy...

So, 7' is too small for a good touch screen? The iPhone screen is only 3.5', unless they've forgotten.

Not to mention, 7' is too small, but 1' (iPod nano) is just fine?

Nothing but marketing-speak. Some people might find 7' too small for a tablet, but others will disagree. To each their own.

Nope. I wouldn't buy a 7 inch iPad. Once you think about it, it's actually really small compared to the 9.7 inch. I don't have an iPad at the moment, but I am planning on getting one very soon. :D

I just love how Jobs rips on 7 inch tablets though.. As for it making sense in the argument of 7inch vs ipad size is argumentative, he makes some solid points.. granted he's kinda sorta biased,

"This size is useless unless you include sandpaper so users can sand their fingers down to a quarter of their size."

hahahaha he's such an OG

And another 'analyst' is completely disproved! Better luck next time, guys!

Steve said "10-inches minimum"; does this mean there could be a larger iPad??? :D
He didn't say "10-inches only", so I'm sure we could let our imagination rumor about a larger iPad... heheh!:D
I would actually like it just enough larger for the display keyboard to be full size. As it is ever so slightly squeezed, I can't keep my fingers over the keys to touch type. But thumb typing works ok for me, and I really don't use the keyboard much.

I have to agree with Jobs, 7" doesn't fit in your pocket, and it's too small for web browsing and books. What's the point? Although I'm sure some people would like them, everybody's different. I could see a 5" phone.

Hahah I called it!

"A smaller screen size would force the use model of the iPad to change.

Programs would have to be redesigned to account for the smaller screen space.

Steve Jobs wouldn't change the use model at this point.

If he introduces something in the 7" range, it would be more of an iPhone than an iPad..
"

There is NO way that steve will EVER introduce a 7" iPad.

Let's make sure you guys understand this:

There is NO way that steve will EVER introduce a 7" iPad.

Got it? Good.

Next.

What will the 7" tablets run? Blown-up phone apps that look ugly? Crunched down tablet apps that don't run touch very well because of the squeezing?

Exactly. Then we have to develop for yet another screen size. If we have to develop for something else, I'm glad that it will be bigger! Can't wait for the letter sized iPad (but still love my 9.7").

Glad Jobs didn't go through with the iFingerSander accessory. :D
