Awesome news, no one wants a 7in tablet.

Speak for yourself. I don't get why everyone is so happy about this! Why does it matter? If you don't want a 7" iPad, then don't buy one. Some you come across as if having a 7" iPad is going to affect you some how.

I think that Jobs is missing a great opportunity for the 7" market. Some people want portability without the really small screen of an iphone or ipod. Something that could be taken on a hike or on the job site. "7 in would be ideal. Since Apple is dropping the ball on this, I'll look elsewhere.

For once I wholeheartedly agree with Steve. 10 inch should be minimum for ipad. Even 10 inches is not that big for a tablet. What is the 7 inch tablet suppose to achieve? It fills a gap in size but not functionality.

You have no clue about what is the perfect size.

So, 7' is too small for a good touch screen? The iPhone screen is only 3.5', unless they've forgotten.

Not to mention, 7' is too small, but 1' (iPod nano) is just fine?

Nothing but marketing-speak. Some people might find 7' too small for a tablet, but others will disagree. To each their own.
Seven feet sounds a bit large for an iPad.

The display part would be a bit expensive for a consumer device. Don't know how many people would buy a tablet that costs as much as an automobile.

But that's just me...

I'm not sure it kills the 7 inch. I saw a 7 inch in the wild the other day. This was in a cafe in the Hayes Valley neighborhood of San Francisco. A guy had it propped up and was typing using a bluetooth keyboard. I look quite closely and saw clearly that the on/off switch and volume buttons were apple's. I didn't take a photo, because I didn't want to get caught being a dork.

I like my Ten Inch

As an owner of an ipad since the release, I have always been against a smaller ipad. For me; the "ten inch" is the perfect size for the living room, and the bedroom. I surf with it, in the living room, and read until the wee hours of the morning with it, in the bedroom. i do not find it any heavier or more awkward
then a regular paperback book. So for any of you that were expecting seven inches this Xmas, I think you had better look at the big ten. After all,
Size does matter...lol

Damn it!! I really wanted a 7 inch ipad to replace my ipod touch. Now I don't know if I should get a new ipod touch or an ipad. No way am I touching a non-apple mobile device. My urge to chuck my android phone out the window rises every day.

Simple,
I need portability and readability.

1. ipad is not portable
(tried caring the 10 inch ipad to work and on the train, its just not portable)
2. ipod touch is not readable
(tried reading ebooks, watching movies, but its not easy)

A 7 inch ipad fits the bill. I personally dont need an ipod touch. If I can get a 7 inch ipad, it will do everything that I need it for.

I guess Steve does not want my money when it comes to 7 inch ipad.

People don't seem to be understanding what steve said. He said that 7" is too small for iPad

That does not mean they wont make a 7" tablet... it will just be iPod and iPhone apps not iPad apps.

Remember sometime this year when Steve said "Good luck" to Google TV because folks are used to cable subscription? Boom, months later, Apple TV was updated for $99. Remember when he said netbook has lousy processing power & non-existent keyboard? Boom, shortly thereafter iPad was introduced. Remember when he said the same thing about Intel chips, video on iPod, possibility of Apple phone & countless contrarian statements in the past?

If history taught us anything, Apple WILL release a 7" tablet in the future. Maybe in April 2011 along with iPad update. Galaxy be damned.

 The iPhone is smaller than 7" and there's not much it can't do.

If clicking things is difficult on 7", it must really hard on on a 3.5 inch.

I agree, if we are making decisions based on difficulty of using touch screen, then the iphone /ipodtouch is gotta go. Or make the iPad a phone.

7" is attractive, because I don't want to put 10 inches out on the subway to change a song or something simple. I want 7 inches because I think it is the smallest size that will make something comfortable to read

I also want to thumb type and fit in my purse.

This is an odd comment since the power/sleep button and volume buttons are rather miniscule. The most distinctive and largest button on the iPad is the "home" button, yet you did not mention it.

It would be uncharacteristically bold for an Apple employee to be field testing an unreleased product so blatantly, with little attempt to pass the device off as an existing product.

I would like to believe you, however this comment is dubious without any sort of authentication.

Again, Apple is NOT going to release a 7" model.. there is no proper use model for something that size, except as an eBook reader, and Amazon already owns that market. (something Jobs knows already.)

It is on my iPodTouch, but not as bad on my HTC EVO 4G with its 4.3" screen. 7" would be better, the 9.7" of the iPad better, 13" still better, 15" better yet, 17" starting to get even better, but most of all we need the 65" model ASAP for those of us that do not see so well.

Biggest mistake of his new tenure at Apple?

That is the way I see it. What Steve doesn't seem to grasp is that sometimes portability is everything. As to the user interface elements that is just BS, the developer has full control over the what and where of the UI elements. Really just look at universal iPhone / iPad apps.

One can only hope this is just Apple trying to take focus off better products until they can deliver something competitive. Please understand here I'm not saying the current iPad is bad, rather it is pretty nifty, what I'm saying is that it simply doesn't serve the needs of every potential user.

As a side note iPad sales where worst than I expected. Since shipping delays have disappeared I take that as an indication of market rejection of the device. Or maybe the market has wised up and simply wants a more capable rev two iPad. One thing is obvious iPad can't be blamed for tanking netbook sales anymore.

No 7" Ipad? Merciful Buddha! Ipad the next generation is on!

There was this doubt, lingering deep in the back of my mind. Cold sweats, insomnia...What if Apple is really doing what a bunch of the rumors floating suggest---making a 7" Ipad? Of course, Apple doesn't make products based on rumors, and many like His Gruberness, who has deep connects, had discounted such an idea as somewhat ludicrous. Nevertheless, I had doubts.

One of the main things that was bugging me was the resolution of the current Ipad. The pixel density is so much less than the Iphone 4 with its "retina display." Of course under ideal circumstances for consumers the 2nd Gen Ipad's display will possess a pixel density at least so fine as to be called "retina" (which means something on the iphone 4) and also be able to properly scale the existing Ipad content for a smooth transition. The argument for a 7" was that it would be easier (CPU/memory/battery-wise) and cheaper to support such pixel density in a smaller form factor. This is what pained me. Of course that argument has valid points, but if Apple implemented it we'd all be getting screwed.

The Samsung Tab strikes me as infinitely less useful than the Ipad. Half or 45% of the display area means you won't be able to web pages for shiz compared to the Ipad. Also one big reason (amongst key others) behind my wanting to get an Ipad in the first place is to read ebooks that I already have. Many of them have pages the same size as normal book pages and the text is set in a single page (can't be scaled). I think one of the main reasons the Ipad is 10", has to do with the size of a standard book page. I have nothing against buying new ebooks from a kindle or ibooks app (where the text can be scaled), but I don't want to just ditch my precious partially legitimate collected library of ebooks that I have. Now, Jobs has come through and ruled out that brazen piece of 7" sheet rumor. Word. If it would have come to a decision between a 7" 2nd Gen and a 10" 1st Gen, I would have had to go with the 10", but it would have caused me oh so much pain.

Just as Picard's ride was so much more fine than Kirk's, I think the 2nd gen is going to have:

Definitely:
-Front facing camera (which I might use once)
-Microphone (Will come in handy)
-More memory 512MB-1GB (This is rather important)

Likely:
-A faster processor (Maybe even dual)
-Improved Speaker System
-New Form Factor (Aluminum, Liquid Metal, or Steel Back, I doubt glass.)

Quite Possible:
-Mac OSX integration (Itunes or similar directly on the Ipad, mark my words!)
-Ability to sync an Ipad and Iphone
-Resolution Bump
-Better Battery Life (This will depend a lot on whether there are large processor, memory, and resolution bumps. I would take the same battery life as the current Ipad with the fore-mentioned bumps over better battery life, though all of them together would be the best.)
-Extra Button(s) and/or Extra Lock Switch

Possible:
Resolution Bump to a Retina Display
Added Ports, (USB would be nice, but I doubt it.)

Don't Rule Out:
A larger Ipad (This might come after the 2nd Gen, but, it is inevitable I say!)

Don't expect a holodeck (we can dream), yet all in all, I think the 2nd Gen Ipad will be quite better than the 1st. The key difference I see in the new Ipad will be its ability to function as a complete computer. Apple has to realize that this must come to pass. Whether it means that there will be some new added docking ability to a keyboard to function more like a laptop, or that the IOS software itself along with hardware bumps will allow more independence, I think Apple knows that the touch interface is the future and they would be short sighted to not work towards making it as independent as possible. There is an enormous market of PC laptop users, whose hearts are ripe to be plucked by the nimble ninja fingers of Jobs. Mind you, the shackles of the Ipad will be unleashed. Freedom is coming, especially with that 7" rank rumor gas blown away. Engage.

It means nothing. A couple years ago, he's said that people don't read books anymore and wouldn't need a book reader, now he has an ebook store. Among other things.

My complaint about the iPad's size is that it's hard to thumb type even in portrait mode. Using one arm to cradle the iPad while typing with the other hand is awkward and incredibly slow. Setting it down on a table to type rocks the tablet, leaving thumb typing the best but still very awkward way to enter text, short of buying a separate keyboard, at which point a notebook might be better.

yes, I know what you mean about being able to able with thumbs.. I've had the same prob. And I totally agree about SJ criticizing the 7" (ala book reader) just to come out with one themselves... I wouldn't surprise me if they came out with different iPad sizes, like ipods, notebooks and desktops.

I think Steve is clueless. He's telling me that an iPhone and an iPod Touch's tiny screen is FINE to run apps on and access the Internet with, but a 7" screen (which is MUCH easier to carry around than a 10" tablet) is too small??? WTF is he smoking?

My problem with the iPad (other than its price considering how cheap Netbooks are that can run the full operating system, not just iOS stuff) is that it's SO BIG that you cannot easily carry it around. If I'm going to carry that in a briefcase or bookbag, I might as well bring a full laptop instead. The great thing about the iPhone/Touch is that you can keep it in your pocket. The thing is that I could easily fit a larger iPhone/Touch than the current model in my pocket and then have all the lovely extra screen space to work with. I don't know if a 7" model would fit in my pocket, but I do know a 10" model isn't going to fit in ANYONE's pocket ever. The thing is just as unwieldy as a netbook.

All I can say is this entire post has got to be sarcasm because anyone taking this seriously is probably on drugs. :p

10 inch apps on 7 inch pad

My take is that the 7 inch itself poses no problem, 3,5 for the iphone does neither. it is the problem of porting 10 inch applications to a 7 inch environment....

OMG some of you guys are taking it the wrong way about what Jobs said about 7" tablets.

1) He said that there are currently about 35K apps for the ipad right now, and it wouldnt make sense for them to introduce a 7" ipad. Why? Because even if it has the same resolution, the apps are designed to work on a much bigger 9.7" screen. And developers wouldnt wanna rewrite their apps to support another device which is exactly the same as current ipad except for smaller in size.

2) Apple is NOT going to offer tablets to replace smartphones. Pretty much anything that you can do on ipad can technically be done on an iphone. And according to Jobs, almost every person who has ipad also has smartphone, So if people want portability they have their smartphone. The purpose of ipad (atleast to me) is to make some of those things more enjoyable, such as browsing, watching videos etc.

Yea, Jobs doesn't know wtf he is talking about.
