When Jobs says that "There is no reception problem", what he means is that "There is no reception! Problem!!!"

When he says "Stay tuned", he means "At least YOU stay tuned as we (Apple) know nothing about radio technology, hence no radio in our products and signal issues from time to time."

You forgot to mention that your hobby is brain surgery and you are a lawyer by 'trade'.

Why don't you just post some pictures of your castle in Narnia land?

In my previous working life I used to work for two major wireless telecom equipment manufacturers and was involved in the development of new mobile standards within ETSI, the ITU-T, and the UMTS Forum. I changed careers a few years ago and worked and at a bulge bracket investment bank in London and then a large hedge fund. So believe what you like.

Check the vote article about the problem... Only there, around 17.000 people voted to verify that they experience the problem. That is just here, on Macrumors, people willing to vote, actually reading the article, from a few countries. Not all 2 million iPhones have a dedicated Macrumors-registered owners.

Sorry but if you're referring to the MacRumors poll, it was a fail from the start because they didn't prevent people from just refreshing and voting again, and again, and again. No doubt some of the fanatics on here sat at home all day yesterday refreshing and casting thousands of votes.

If it is a software fix then everyone who says it's not happening to them is actually happening to them. Software is either 1 or 0.

software issues?

So could all this mean its really a software issue?

I guess we will all just have to wait. what a scary idea!

Just another 30 days, and here I come :D

What?

Paranoia rules, its a conspiracy.

Dam it jim Im a doctor not a statistician. ;)

I think users of FPGAs would disagree with you :)

This is a situation where Apple's culture of secrecy really isn't helping them. If they've found a problem they can solve (or significantly improve) through software updates, they should announce it. Can't be hurting too much, though...stock price is fine, and iPhone 4 sales continue unabated.

Apple should never loose their secrecy, may they last a 1000 year of secrecy, after all, its not like we care how forthcoming Microsoft is. Its their secrecy that keeps us coming back for more, almost like royalty, we hate it but we can't get enough of it.

I'm sorry but Steve's being a complete asshat about this.

I love Apple as much as the next guy, but seriously. For him to respond denying the issue is insulting. There is no excuse for it. A simple 'We're working on it' would have sufficed, but to DENY any problem....I'm starting to loose all respect for the guy.

These are not the droids you are looking for.

YEah! SJ is my hero again!

The iPhone 4 is awesome. Really I love it. Photos and video are top notch!!!! And man its slick. Going from v1 to v4 was def worth it. And I do notice a drop in bars, but havent dropped calls because of it. And Sj will make good to peeps concerns.

I experience the reception problem (resulting in dropped calls) and I live in the NJ/Philadelphia area.

Yesterday, I went to an Apple store (Atlantic City, NJ) to check out this issue on a group of phones. First thing I noticed was that all iPhones on display in the store were pegged at 5 bars (including mine). Then I held both a display iPhone4 and my phone using the left-corner death grip and the signal did not budge - still full bars.

Then I took my phone, and while still holding it in a problematic way, I walked out of the store and went 100 ft in different directions ... as I walked, I could see the bars drop one-by-one ... at 100 ft. away (and no bars), I would then remove my touch on the antennas and the signal would come back.

Apparently, and as expected, signal strength does play a part in this issue ... and (also not a surprise) it appears that the Apple stores may have an AT&T setup right there, blasting the signal.

You cannot be serious. How's the Kool-aid down there?

Perhaps software to fix the number of bars shown. Since it doesn't affect the call. It is just cosmetic.

It's a lot more involved than just some pixels on a signal strength meter needing some recalibration, unfortunately. I myself (as detailed in the link in my sig) and many many others are having real issues with this phone - this isn't just something we're making up for the hell of it, the phone simply doesn't function as a phone in our situations.

Proof?

I find it hard to believe that he would still think their is no reception issue, I have never seen a phone that loses bars when picked up.

Really? I have on other phones, it has a lot to do with signal strength at your location.

I have had 0 signal loss from hand use in Portland Or. Full disclosure; I'm a honest lefty, really no PROBLEM here on my IPhone 4!

Anyone can effect a phones signal from outside the view of a video camera if they want to bad enough. Job loss and stock prices can be big motivators for negative feedback & reviews. Sony, Nokia, HTC, and the rest have billions to loose....

Do they care though? I have the utmost respect for the British and everything, but their newspapers (or tabloids, the line is somewhat blurred) make the National Enquirer look like the Washington Post. They seem to live in a fictional world where facts and truth are entirely irrelevant, all that matters is that you can come up with a har-de-har clever headlines like "Lickity Splat! Peaches Geldof Looks Pants Again In Awful New Outfit". Worst press in the world, hands down.

That's why they the BBC. Though completely agree with you about certain papers here.

You know, there are two ways that this could pan out:

Best case - software update released immediately which actually fixes the issue.

Worst case - Apple redesigns the antenna, adding whatever insulating film needed, and issues a recall.

For stockholders' and customers' sake I hope it's the former.

I own aapl stock and sure don't want to lose money (even if on paper), but I'm also a buyer if I see aapl go down on some temporary bad news. And just for the record, IMHO, we don't have enough info to know if we have bad news.

This is such a widespread issue that it seems like EVERY iPhone 4 has it, even if the owner says he/she doesn't

Not True. Over the weekend, I have seen / held 11 i4's. All of them were ether pre-ordered and delivered to the San Francisco Bay area, or picked up in Apple stores here. Of the 11 that I have personally held, 6 had no problem and 5 had the problem. This shows me that a lot of phones have this problem, but many do not. To say that EVERY or MOST have this problem is not in line with the phones I've held. Mine (thankfully) has no problem at all. My best friends is unusable when held.

From this I have to believe that something was different in the manufacturing or assembly process for some phones. Hopefully there's a fix to the software that interprets the signal from the antenna that will correct this. If it turns out to be a problem that can only be solved at the hardware level, then Apple is screwed big time. They would have to divert massive amounts of phones from the pipeline to replace defective units. If that happens, all bets are off on pre-order ship dates and the 9 countries that are to come online in July. Ether way they've already taken a major hit in the international press and sales will (have) suffered because of this.

Does anyone know anything about the metal that's used in the bezel? Is it treated or coated with anything when it's fabricated? Given that a piece of tape on the metal seems to help the signal, I wonder if a layer of coating was left off of a batch or two. Just a thought.
