The Kershaw, Cutter & Ratinoff Legal firm have opened up their own investigation into the iPhone 4's well-known reception issues. The firm urges customers experiencing issues to contact them via live instant message chat, by phone, or by e-mail.

This particular firm has dealt with some high-profile class-action lawsuits in the past such as an $87 million wage settlement involving UPS drivers. Apple has settled a high-profile class-action lawsuit in the past for $22.5 million, when the original iPod nanos were very susceptible to scratches.

If anyone wishes to help in their investigation, here is the link:

bro, cool story.

Thanks. I try to share the most gleeful times and worst run-ins I have as a consumer. I think we really have to protect our own consumer rights and sharing our stories is one way to look out for each other.

The least they could have done in this situation was admitted that they all know about it and it's happening on all of their phones too, but followed by saying they aren't going to give away bumpers or exchange phones or whatever. The complete denial that anything is happening whatsoever is what really sends a negative message.

I love reading these comments.

I had an iPhone 3gs and now have an iPhone 4. I have had it since last Wednesday. Not only are there no "death grip" issues, but the voice calls are much better than any of my other phones. I am sure that most of the people commenting are PC lovers (I like google and windows products too). I am sure that these people commenting hate Apple just because they are Apple, but I know from experience that this is flat out a better phone than any I have every used.

This "death grip" thing in one month will be proven to be just like the "exploding iPhone 3gs" we heard so much about during the last update. This is all made up. It's bogus. This is just a well played out plot against Apple that has no truth. This is a typical scam, pushed by Nokia or the Android platform or some other company. Either way, this will be a non-issue in a month. Guaranteed. If you don't like the iPhone, return it (they will happily take it back, no questions asked), then go buy yourself a different phone and be gone. Go on your merry way in life. Beat it. Go back to your caves. I am sick of all your complaining because this is all made up garbage.

woah woah newbie fanboy... first iphone ever?? obviously lol

IAnd telling people to "just don't hold it that way" is the antithesis of usability and good design.

Or it could be the exact opposite.

If they think a computer should be used with a mouse, then they might make a desktop computer without the expected arrow keys for a couple years, until everybody is expects a mouse. Same with the diskette drive and legacy ports.

If they think to end up with the best designs, people should learn for best results not to cover the antenna on a small microwave devices, then Apple might just be selling a phone that people can't use unless they learn to "hold different".

And note that poster just joined - seems like when someone just joins in the past few days and strongly preaches up "there is no reception issue" there's something going on, at least to me.

If you're not having problems with your brand new iPhone 4, congrats, but many of us are, numbers in the thousands upon thousands, and rising just as fast as Apple can sell 'em.

Let's hope you don't.

No. The only benefit it to the lawyers, they just use us.

Wrong, they will be another strong force to help force Apple's hand into fixing this issue. Sure they will make plenty of money doing it, but in the end, it will help force Apple into fixing the issue, thus helping the iPhone 4 customer base.

Wrong. Apple will fix it on their own, but that's beside the point. Very few, if any, class actions provide any worthwhile restitution to the class members, and the final settlement is just some sort of deal made that doesn't address the core issue.

Really, you think all companies fix issues on their own ? Even Apple ? And class action lawsuits are worthless, except for the lawyers. Perhaps you need to do a little research.

Perhaps you should try a little reading comprehension, that's not what I said.

So class actions generally pay off for the lawyers in terms of pure dollars, but not much at all for customers, especially in a case this big. However, Apple or other companies would do absolutely nothing if we gave them the option. None of us alone has the pull to make Apple correct the situation. That is the whole idea behind banding together in a class action lawsuit. It is not a get rich quick scheme for us consumers. It is merely a way for us to generate the momentum we need to force Apple to own up to its mistake and take action to correct it (and if we're lucky, do the right thing).

I totally agree with your statement. Thanks for phrasing it better then me.

There is an iPhone 4 forum on the Apple site. But, yes, threads disappear frequently.

it's an apple site........ apple has people checking it and REMOVE posts they don't like, it happened to me when i explained how to install a airport extreme card in a mac pro last year

Still nothing announced from apple. I've lost all faith in them as a company and will be returning my iPhone tomorrow, and getting an Evo x.

Your loss apple.

While I think you are right about many fandroids and winbot trolling around here just to bash Apple on something, I really think this issue is REAL and deserve attention.

amen, i live in LA and had to visit several ATT stores on Sunday. I had to get a sim replacement for my wife's 3GS. Both stores had 2 ip4s on display, and both had the issues with full 5 bar strong 3g signal. got 1 to go to searching every time i picked it up. got the other to go to 1 bar. tried 5 times and each time it worked like clockwork. additionally the data transfer rates were severely affected. as soon as i put it down it was fine. rep confirmed that a case doesn't always help data speeds most times...

wish the folks on this site didn't feel the need to write this issue off as BS. nobody is questioning your undying apple loyalty! its real and its affecting people. It clearly is something that deserves the attention it is getting and i hope apple has a fix. if not i can see this becoming a very real chink in the apple armor.

And you are one of the exaggerating people. The phone doesn't go from 5 bars to searching every time you grab it
It can lose 2 bars, sure. But if it went into search mode it was a defective unit ...

Do you actually think apple doesn't care?

This is a company who's success is built on "it just works".

They KNOW there are problems - and its fairly obvious that they are working on it.

All this "lets sue em" whining reminds me of the coma issue in ios 3.1.

Apple never admit mistakes - what is the point?

They fix em - usually quietly in a software update a month later.

This is the way they work, secrecy is their game - if you don't like it, there are other companies and smartphones out there.

Threatening legal action won't make them fix it any faster - all it does is give lawyers more bmws and wastes everyone's time and money.

=============================

IMHO - I suspect the reception strength is being controlled by the software.

O2 still haven't swapped my phone card (idiots), so have a chance do do a bit of bench testing.

Here we see our 3 PAYG phones

the wife's 3g (os2) - my 3g (os4) - my new 4g (os4)

haven't been too thorough i my observations, but i have noticed that the 4g is always consistently 1 bar lower in reception.

I am, as they say, "Staying tuned" to see what happens.

"well my iPhone can't make or receive phone calls half of the time, but it's such a beautiful object and it has the Apple logo, so I don't care"

Mine has gone from 4 bars to searching so think 5 to searching is possible.

He's not exaggerating - many peoples experience is that it does go to searching. Your experience seems to be that it drops two bars. You are both correct.

It's been posted many times before, but it's all about the LOCATION and the signal strength in that particular place.

Every phone has a minimum signal strength required to show 5 bars on the phone. Let's call that strength 5. Touching the bottom left corner causes the signal strength to to drop by a certain amount, let's call it -5.

If you are in an area with a signal strength of 10 or more, touching that place will not cause any bars to drop on your phone, (10-5=5) so you think it is fine.

If you are in an area with a signal strength of 8, touching that place will cause you to lose 2 bars (8-5=3). That's what you're seeing.

If you are in an area with a signal strength of 5 or less, touching that place will cause you to lose all reception and go to searching (5-5=0)

I have been on an eight hour call (that's still going) and not even one drop. More than that really because for part of the time I was on a multi-party call.

Its trust.

We trust that problems are usually sorted out and when they are - you are left with a benchmark piece of tech all the other companies try and copy.

Hello, welcome to the forum btw.

If you are also a new apple customer experiencing difficulties, be patient.
Problems are usually dealt with. Its tough on the cutting edge of design.
But the view from up here is stunning.
