Sorry to say it, but pics or it didn't happen.

Which would you prefer? Screencaps from Mail.app or from my iPhone?

Screen caps from mail :)

Screen caps from mail :)
I wish you had said iPhone, that took forever! I wanted to remove my personal info so I took the cap into PS and mosiac'd a bunch of stuff. Anyway, here you go:

Check out that response time! He replied to my first email just two minutes after I sent it! He must've had his iPhone in his hand right when my mail arrived ...

...Or he must have ordered the replacement of every Leopard Server at Apple HQ that was dealing with mail delivery and replaced them with Exchange servers to get Push working.

And you people do realize its not him replying to these emails but rather either an administrative assistant or some low-level help desk person right?
I used to think so too, but after today's exchange, I'm not so sure. I mean, why would a 'low-level help desk person' send a reply from an iPhone (it was sent from an iPhone, according to the headers) at 7pm on a Wednesday night with a sig that says "Steve - Sent from my iPhone" just two minutes after receiving my inquiry? Obviously this "Steve Jobs" person has their work email set up on their iPhone and just happened to get my email as he was holding/looking at the phone. I don't think a staffer would've replied in two minutes, from their iPhone, at that time of day.

Hey, I could be wrong. But I don't think so. ;)

You know, it's funny - look at the build date from the header:

(Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 6.3-7.02 (built Jun 27 2008; 64bit))

Whatever email system he's using, it was upgraded/installed recently, but not recently enough to be MobileMe (weren't the MobileMe problems corrected at the end of July) ... ?

The email server could easily sort the email and send forward it to a team of people. That way someone is always available to answer. I can't imagine Jobs wanting to receive all that email. I'm sure people send thousands (if not more) messages to it a day, most of it of which is probably utter crap.

As much as we all like to think our problem is of the utmost importance, I'm sure Jobs doesn't have the time to worry about a particular individual's problems. If he does, then as a stock holder I'm a little pissed because I'm sure there are better things he could be doing with his time.

Well, the problem seems to affect Windows users as much as Mac users - the one thing most have in common is that we have a large number of apps installed. If I have no apps installed, backups take about 30 seconds. The more apps I add, the longer they become - with 50 installed, they take about an hour, hour and a half - which in my opinion is unacceptable. But it's easy enough to disable backups - my problem is that the phone locks up (just Google 'apple logo of death') and usually has to be restored, which is a three-four hour process, due to the excruciatingly slow app installation process.

Whatever. I'm glad to see they're aware of the problem and will fix it soon!

Well I have 20 apps installed and I still can't see why there would be a such a dramatic increase in back-up time from 2 minutes to over an hour. How much memory space is left on your phone?

I know this is not a long term solution but wouldn't the prudent thing be to maybe limit the number of apps until they fix the "problem". Maybe you take Light Sabre off for a little while.:)

I agree 100%.

You may be right. But whoever responded to me did it from their iPhone within two minutes of receiving my email, and their name is Steve. That's pretty cool, AFAIC. ;)

+1 Clearly the case. Anyone who believes that Jobs personally gets thousands of emails from users, must also believe that Santa reads their letters.

If he did, there would've been a multiple email delete feature on the iPhone from the start!

Still... it's always possible that his assistants forward him a few each day.

Agreed. It'd make sense for him to want the assistants to forward him some that they think are important or whatever, but you can be assured that not every 12 year olds whine rant is making steve job's iphone beep.

I'm glad Steve uses an iPhone on the daily.

As long as he's in the trenches, and dealing with what we deal with, I think change should come quick.

There's no way "His Steveness" is going to put up with keyboard lag much longer ....

I wish people would quit replying with this stupid-*** shallow response. People are going to be dissatisfied with a product in one way or another. Just because they say they don't like something doesn't mean they should just drop it and move on. There's obviously fixes on the way. And if somebody's having more trouble than the majority, they have a reason to complain. Where else are they supposed to go for support??

Dissatisfied is one thing...but the OP didn't say that he did anything to remedy the problem other than restoring it 40x+ for 3 weeks. Can't he have just at least exchanged it once, say after the 14th restore?

As where to go for support...did he even try an Apple Store? How about Apple Tech Support? Seems like his first attempt at obtaining support after 3 weeks is to go straight to the CEO of the company. That should fix it quick.

Unless he's like one of use who has one that works fine and thinks everyone else is a whiner:)

Excuse me, but who said anything about jailbreaking???

you did. You have posted multiple times about jailbreaking. Are you saying that suddenly now that you are having problems you never did it? Right.

I emailed Steve jobs today to request compensation for the time I've wasted restoring my iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 40 times since July 11th due to Apple's buggy software. To my surprise, he emailed me back not once but twice - the first email, just two minutes after I sent my message - but both times from his iPhone
Cool.

40 restores? im going to go out on a limb here and say its at least partially your fault
Why do you assume this?

Seems kind of ballsy to jailbreak and then demand compensation for your problems.
When did he say he jailbreaked his iPhone?

A lot of assuming going on in this thread. :(

you could return or sell the phone if it isnt meeting your lofty expectations
So wanting your cell phone to work is considered lofty expectations?

My "lofty expectations?"
You don't need to explain.

Anyway, it's nice to know Apple is aware of this (somewhat widespread) issue and will fix it soon!
Yes, it is.

What, like expecting it to work?
:)

Yep. Have a 32GB Touch.

Without Apps installed, the backup is very quick.

I have 78 apps. it takes about 2 hours to backup.

I have about 10GB free, so memory usage is not the issue.

And you people do realize its not him replying to these emails but rather either an administrative assistant or some low-level help desk person right?
Could be. We don't know for sure.

See above.

I am in the process of doing this with my apps.

What upsets me, is one of my favorite calculators will not launch now.

PCalc worked fine. Then I had to do a restore. Now it won't launch. Dang it.

Right now I understand the need to limit the number of applications until the bug fix is out. However, just like with a computer, you wouldn't expect there to be a limit on the number of applications that you can install. Hopefully the next update will fix this issue.

Also, based on the behavior of the Touch before and after using some apps, I suspect there are some programming issues involving memory leaks/releases. This will get fixed. Takes time is all.

Edit: Upon removing, then adding PCalc, it now works. Go figure...

Since you seem to be so familiar with my posting history, why not post a link to somewhere where I talked about jailbreaking my iPhone 3G? (Good luck with that!) ;)

And you know, it's funny - now that you mention jailbreaking (again) ... I never had problems with my iPod Touch until July 12th - the day I installed the 2.0 software upgrade. It had been jailbroken since November of last year and I never had to restore it - not once - until the 2.0 software. I even took the time to do a complete wipe (restored to 1.1.4, set up as a new iPod, and then updated to 2.0) but it still locks up after spontaneously rebooting during app installs, just like my iPhone 3G. But hey, at least I'm not the only one.

No way he replied, sorry. Def a PR person.

I cant wait for this next patch, push services are on their way!!!

An assistant or service rep replied. No way it was from him, regardless of the email address used.

AGREED!

I'm sure he has a 'real' email address that he uses to actually communicate with people at apple, not this one thats posted on the internet. Do you think Steve is bothering to sort through all the junk emails from the public sent to him, in order to find real emails he needs to know about? I think that email address is just forwarded to the apple help people.

And yes, Apple employees actually use iphones to respond to emails, fancy that.
