I was pretty sure, but just for you I checked again ;-)
TOSLINK or Coax (the two popular digital audio interconnects for non audiophiles out there) actually don't specify a format for their use, not unlike FireWire (which can be used for any kind of data.
It's up to the receiver or decoder to process the data. On your DVD player you specify bitstream output and it will simply output a DVD-Video's audio tracks thru the cable, in either DTS or Dolby Digital Format (AC3 is memory serves me).
DVD-A doesn't use either of these audio formats, and to prevent rippers from comming out and pissing off the RIAA al over again the chips (?) are only found in DVD players, like some in the excellent line of Denon DVD players. The high end models play back DVD-Video, DVD-A, SACD, HDCD, PhotoCD, CD-RWs, etc. Good stuff. Of interest the format you would want to use to rip DVD-A (if such a thing is ever allowed) would be MPEG-4 since it supports both high def and multichannel. I hope in the future we will be able to use our G5's optical cable to output 5.1 music we get off the iTMS. I'd be willing to pay good money for that kind of quality audio.
