The SL 55 hasn't been around for SEVERAL years now. It has been the SL 63 for the past several years.
This is obviously very old information if even true.

I might have found the applicable section at the bottom of this page:
http://dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d03/vc4456.htm
Excerpt:
(c) A vehicle displaying a copy of the report of sale may be operated without license plates or registration card until either of the following, whichever occurs first:
(1) The license plates and registration card are received by the purchaser.
(2) A six-month period, commencing with the date of sale of the vehicle, has expired.
So what's the explanation for the barcode?

I do not know much about high end cars but in my opinion if he wanted to blend in, he would have driven a Focus or Yaris. Not something that appears to cost a lot of money like that car.
You can blend in plenty with a car like that in many areas of California. He could afford the luxury so why bother with the likes of a Focus or a Yaris?
You mean Californians can get away with not paying license fees for at least 6 months?? If he perpetually turned over the car and never got a license tag, in my state that means he would never have paid the road taxes, priviledge fees, etc that have to be paid.

Think Different.
"There's a difference between knowing the path and walking the path"...
Thankfully there's those that don't give a crap about falling into line like sheep.
In California, his car is a dime a dozen, hardly standing out... unlike most of the rest of the States.
Hah, clever guy. But why leave the license plate frame on?
What is the point of not having a license plate?
Whats the point of doing this? To avoid paying tolls? Another quirk of another rich guy? Just because he can?
He didn't want to be tracked.
Devilishly clever. Even more so considering that he went through all that trouble for something so seemingly pointless.
As others noted, he didn't want to be tracked, but I also suspect that it had to do with aesthetics. License plates are really quite hideous compeared to the cars they're affixed to, and not all that different from say an Intel Inside sticker on a laptop. In his mind, it was ugly and unnecessary.
Seems odd they would have enough identical-looking SL55 AMGs to supply him...
