Not sure how I feel about this. Sure, Steve is an icon of business, creative thinking, etc...

But how big an impact did he personally have on the world? He sure didn't do it alone.

IMO both Zuckerberg and Jobs will be equally silly.

Especially in the year of the Arab spring.

Yes, there were plenty better alternatives in 2010. That choice was RIDICULOUS imho.

Let's see what comes after the Arab spring. (Hopefully better, democratic, free Systems in the countries affected)

Note: it's "of the year". Jobs went on leave two weeks into the year....

Whatever Jobs did in the last 50 years, the POY is for this year. Jobs worked for two weeks this year, and spent much of the rest of it in hospice care.

That does not qualify for POY. What he did last year, the year before, or the five years before does not matter. It's this year.

What did Zuckerberg do last year?

Facebook was at it's prime in 2010. He didn't steal anything, just took an idea and made it better just like Steve Jobs did.

So? Apple is at its prime this year.

Especially if you make the question "what did he do in the less than 3 weeks of 2011 that he was on the job?".

Time's POY award is not a "lifetime achievement" award - it's for the last 12 months.

Long, long overdue.

Sorry (not really) to repeat myself, but:

Time's POY award is not a "lifetime achievement" award - it's for the last 12 months.

What did Jobs really accomplish in calendar year 2011, other than dying? Does he deserve any award for being dead?

Steve continued to actively work on projects despite being on medical leave. I know that might be hard to grasp, so I'll give it a while to sink in.

Okay. Do you not think the folks at Apple were implementing new ideas from Steve throughout the year? Do you not think Steve influenced Apple this year?

Also, Apple became the #1 company this year. But it took many years for it to get there. Guess who worked at Apple for many years? Steve! What did Zuckerberg do last year?

I'm sure that you are really happy that McDonalds salary was able to pay for an iPod touch...

Jeez ..Its so DOPE

But your iToy has nothing to do with the person of the year

I have no clue where you're getting McDonald's from and I don't own an iPod Touch.

But if Apple's products have nothing to do with Steve & POTY, then Facebook had nothing to do with Zuckerberg for POTY. And if Facebook wasn't a factor in his POTY, then why was he POTY? It has EVERYTHING to do with it! Jobs' influence is felt through his company and products.

Popular and sales has NOTHING TO DO WITH IT

It is who has changed the world the most.

And from the 4 to the 4S.........Please !

Gimmie a break

Facebook caused the Arab Spring !

Yeah ! Zuk gets some cred..

But SJ....Now ??.....Why ?? Cause he died ?

You just don't understand the concept dude

If it is popular and changes the world, yeah, that has something to do with it. Zuckerberg was POTY 2010 because he created a popular social network. If only 10 people used Facebook in 2010, I guarantee you TIME wouldn't go "Gee Zuck, you created something good, and although no one is using it, here's your POTY award."

Sales made Apple the world's #1 company. Hmm, I'm pretty sure that has something to do with Steve Jobs...hold on, lemme check...

POTY goes to those who've had an influence in the world. Suffice to say, Jobs had quite the influence.

And no, FB did not cause the Arab Spring. The Arab Spring also began in mid-December. Hardly an influence on 2010.

No, I call you a troll for calling people iSheep on MR. Is that so hard for you do understand? I couldn't care less if you think Steve Jobs deserves the title or not.

But then again: the deeper reasons which caused the Arab Springs seem to be off your comprehension scale as well.

He'll get it just because he's so popular right now, regardless of the fact he deserves it (as a lifetime achievement). Time has already shown us they jumped the shark with that stupid "You" fiasco. The Person of the Year is supposed to be an individual human who had the greatest effect of the world that year, but nowadays Time will pick the marketable and P.C. over the real person, since people think being named Person of the Year is some sort of laudable award, when it's not meant that way.

Does anyone remember who Person of the Year was in 1938?

Guess who wasn't Person of the Year in 2001.

Ugh... macrumors just had to remind us of Time's POTY 2006, "You".

I admit, I never read that issue, but it just annoyed the piss out of me everytime I saw it on the newstand. I'm all for people-power and user-created content, but give me a break. How lazy and cheesy was that choice?!

Most Time readers, especially back in 2006, hadn't contributed a damn bit of content to the internet, and to the extent a small portion had, it wasn't anything of significant value. "You". Please.

Sorrry... </rant>

I knew there was something I forgot to put on my resumé.

They missed their chance many times. To hell with them.

Totally agree. They had so many chances to award this to him over the years and for so many reasons. They overlooked him his whole life and now they're gonna award him posthumously! Why? He's easily done enough to deserve it, but he's deserved it most of his working life, why now? Are they really trying to right a wrong here? Or are they just jumping on a bandwagon and just trying to sell more copies of their mag? Nothing wrong with selling more copies of their mag, but don't flower it up with false sentiment and use Steve's death to do it.

That idiot Mark Zuckerburk actually won it. WHILE STEVE WAS STILL ALIVE. I mean, seriously, WTF!

I say screw 'em. They're no friend of Steve Jobs.

In all honesty, the "Occupy Protesters" seems like a very likely possibility.

Actually, the list I saw included "angry people" - sounds like a politically correct slant on that.

Just angry people, no birds?

Time's Person of the Year is awarded to "a person, couple, group, idea, place, or machine that for better" or for worse, ...has done the most to influence the events of the year.'"

Really? Wonder if there are any deposed dictators on the list.

Just cause he died? I was listening to Howard Stern, he literarly thinks that Steve Jobs personally invented the mp3 player and the touch screen. The touch screen in my Nintendo DS and pocket PC both in 2004 were invented by Steve Jobs. That's the reality for so many.
Before the iPod an mp3 player hardly deserved this name. Mp3 players could hold something like 10 songs and had a battery live of something like one hour.

Sorry, but considering all the **** that has happened this year, I think it would be dumb to have him be the person of the year.

The Person of the Year is supposed to be the person that has had the greatest impact on the world as a whole within the year. I would say the Arab Spring had a much greater impact on the world than anything Jobs did this year.

Nominate him, fine, but Time is going to lose a whole lot of credibility if he is named the winner. I suspect they will do another collective people of the year, and have it be "Protesters" or something like that.

That magazine is loosing it status big time.
Too late. Last year, two years ago that would make some sense but now? Press stunt and nothing else. They just want to cash it.
