Really sad

To see all this self-righteous ppl making such coments, I live in Japan and I would like to tell you that ANY help helps a lot and we are thankful. Doesn't matter who that helps come from even if is only 1 dollar from Carlos Slim it is greatly welcome.

1) And there are so many who think he doesn't have a heart.

2) I'm sure people will find many things to criticize though. Cue the haters in 3, 2, 1....
1) Not true.

This is a forum for discussion of all things Apple including Steve Jobs _business_ practices, which have nothing to do with his personal life.

Witness all the well wishes regarding his health.

2) This incredibly negative comment I'm responding to says more about you, than the people you are addressing.

They haven't even responded and you're already _assuming_ it will be negative.

Once again reflecting where your head is at.

Cheer up, you'll enjoy life more :)

I was listening to the latest episode of the MacBreak Weekly podcast and host Leo Laporte mentioned at the beginning of the show that the Apple Stores in Tokyo were aggressively going out of their way to help Apple customers in the Tokyo area affected by the earthquake. This story confirms that Apple corporate headquarters is helping in this effort.

Its the least what they should do. In all honesty I would like to see Apple do more like making some sort of direct donation, matching customer donations or similar. Its not like Apple couldn't afford to do it. The number of people they are helping with this effort is low. However, its better then nothing.

Oh here we go AGAIN. Are you seriously going to criticize this good deed. How do you know the exact number of people being helped. How much did you donate to this cause? To answer your internal question I donated $2,500. Money I was saving to get a MacBook Pro for my education.

Basically $teve is telling his workers in Japan, the same corporate spin I've heard at any large company I've worked at. "Sorry for your loss, contact HR if you need anything.. and don't forget to fill out your timesheet with the correct amount of leave you intend to take during this period, minus the required short term you're alotted for things like this.". $teve Job$ is such a classy guy.

Awesome, they set up a Red Cross donation page. Any monkey can set that up through the Red Cross. How much is APPLE or $TEVE JOB$ donating? How much is APPLE/$TEVE JOB$ helping to find their workers a temporary place to stay/food.. maybe even another temporary job while things get sorted out? BLAH BLAH BLAH.. shareholders.. BLAH BLAH BLAH. $teve could crap on their plate and tell them to eat it and they would. Anything that he says, goes, plain and simple. If he said "hey.. let's REALLY do something about this", the shareholders would be more than willing. UNLESS of course, you're insinuating the shareholders are just as greedy as Steve is? There's a thought.

As for the statement that Apple many not announce that they are helping... bs. Everything Apple does is media-centric. They want the media to know all of the good they do. All the units they've pushed. All of the battles against Google and Adobe they're trying to wage. Are you kidding me? Apple thrives on media attention. The world's stage is focused on Japan. Where is apple? Karma is a b*tch Steve.. but I guess you already know that.

Classy guy.. classy company.

magical - > :apple: < - magical

There is no logic in what you are saying. Apple is making public their efforts of trying to help their own staff so I don't see why they would hide their efforts of helping the rest of the population.

I disagree.

Just because an e-mail was made public concerning Jobs et al. willing to help their employees does <not> mean that they're <not> giving money privately.

The real essence of charity is not for personal gain (e.g., publicizing it), but for the good of others. Maybe in this instance they could care less about telling us how much they donated. Frankly, I could care less if they told us anything concerning their efforts. Who am I to pass judgement?

The point is, they're doing something.

Sure is easy to make decisions when it's not your money, isn't it? :)

Apparently it's even easier to make ignorant comments when it's not your facts. Last I checked Steve Job owns about 5.5 million shares of AAPL stock.

Apple didn't lose $14B, Apple's market cap lost $14B. Big difference there. Maybe just as painful, but Apple did not lose money directly or did anyone holding Apple shares unless they sold them for a loss.

Who says that Apple aren't helping in other ways. Not every-one does charity work just for the publicity and many donate anomalously - there is no need for everyone to know.

Apple employees are clearly very proud of how their company has handled the situation and want to share that with everybody.

Because making undisclosed donations during major relief efforts doesn't make any sense. I'm a AAPL stock holder and I wouldn't be happy to find out that a company I've invested in carries out philanthropy without any media coverage. To make it plain and simple this can be seen as an investment opportunity. The neoclassical/corporate productivity model is based on the principle that the major aim of a company is to generate profit. Corporate donations must serve the “enlightened self-interest” of the donors. By investing in the improvement of public image the very objective of these donations is always the long-run profitability of the company. You can call me a greedy bastard but at least I'm greedy bastard with a good conscience (I've made two private donations for the relief effort in Japan) and I would like to see Apple do more then just the basic HR crisis management which is standard in most corporations.

I'm sure everyone will criticize and hate on him because he's only helping Apple Employees.

He has heart.

Way to go steve.... :apple: I'm sure he wants to help people, but it's still in the back of my mind that this is all good PR......

A good move, if you're an Apple employee. However I'm willing to bet most people affected by this earthquake aren't. Reminds me of those Christian groups who only help Christians in these kind of events.

I don't know, I've donated a lot of my personal money to this and I'm going without for a bit. If I had the money and resources to help out the maximum amount of people that I could - I bloody well would.

Apple only helping its own and Microsoft turning this into a marketing ploy. Does make one feel a little sick .

It's another brilliant business idea from Gates: extort money from Buffett or Chinese billionaires to save his own wealth. And of course every little step is advertised, "Look at me, I'm a world's top philanthropist."

See, that's what happens when you donate money publicly. Haters hate you just the same.

Quoted so people will read it, it's worth a read.

Don't worry, any such 'press release' will no doubt be 'reported' via John Gruber or Walt Mossberg...

It was a good gesture - but if SJ had written it, wouldn't it just have been:

"Our sincere sympathies. Contact HR for supplies.

Steve
Sent from my iPad 2"

So funny, so accurate, so brilliant!

Thanks :)

I'm heartbroken for Japan. Deeply sad for all the people affected by this tragedy.

My heart goes out to everyone in Japan

I really hope the situations improve quickly.

I think it's great that Mister Jobs and Apple are offering help to their employees. It would be great if the help extends beyond this, but way to go Apple.

Everyone in Japan, be safe and be well.

it's funny how you make some **** up and then end it off with an insult... how the hell does that work? you don't know the details of the situation, NONE OF US DO. and who cares if Apple wants to help its employees, or wants to donate money. why should they have to, because they have tons of money? i have no doubt that they already have (and have probably donated more than everyone on MacRumors combined), but seriously, it's none of your business, or anyone else's here.

btw how many companies out there would go out of their way to help during a natural disaster? very very few.

What the heck is everyone arguing about here? Who is better at giving away money between MS and Apple? Who cares?

People have died, many more people may die, a whole country is upside down and you guys make it into a battle of who is better than the other. Save it for another thread guys, what Apple is doing is great. What MS is doing is great. Everything helps, there is no award for who gives the most away.
