Hey I asked this question earlier and never got a response..

I JUST bought my MBP on March 16, which places me in the 30 day exchange policy that Apple had promised me. However, since I have obviously been using my MBP since then, there will be a 139.90 restocking fee charge if I were to do an exchange. So, given the updates on the 13'', should I exchange it for the refreshed 13''? Is it worth the 139.90?!

BTW, I purchased the highest end 2.53ghz model of the 13'' MBP.

I need advice from the experts here. I only have 2 days to decide whether or not the updates are worth another $140.

only if you really want the newest MBP 13" and if you want a slightly better gpu.

how many gb of ram do you have?

would it be $140 more for you to get the 2.66 or the 2.4?

did yours come with a 160gb hd or a 250gb?

do you care about the battery life?

The answers to these questions and how much those components are worth to you will let you answer your question yourself.

if you will get more ram, the new gpu and a slightly faster processor you should definitely do it. Also the battery life will be better. Wouldn't you save money though because the setup your have now is cheaper after the refresh?

Not all, just the 13''. I saw in several comments in sites that intel will stop c2d production this summer and keep only the ulv and i series.

I'm still a big fan of Apple computers but just placed an order for the 14" Lenovo Thinkpad. If the 13" MBP had gotten an i5 I would have went to the store and bought one today, but getting the C2D just doesn't feel right to me. My new Thinkpad will have an i7-620M, 4GB ram, 250GB HDD, 256MB (nvidia 3100m?) graphics, 1440x900 HD res, 9 cell battery, webcam and other stuff for $1284 after tax and free shipping. Got the student discount and on a whim I let a rep give me a quote who then gave me an additional $135 discount (upgraded to the i7 for free)!

I wish the 15" MBP was within my budget and it looks like a fine machine, but maybe I'll be back to Mac someday soon!

I cancel my plan to buy the high end 13" mbp n wait for the next gen. If the above statement is true, I'm sure the next gen will be the arrandale or other new Intel cpu. For now, I'll only upgrade the RAM on my current laptop, although it is way outdated but still, it can get the job done.

Peace.:D

Two words: BATTERY LIFE
(Presumably 10 hours)

While i do very much agree of your comment about how lame the new 13" mbp is, I think you have missed a point in comparing laptop computers.....the weight. I would like to know the weight of your new laptop.

It's a typical problem of Dell / IBM a.k.a. Lenovo etc. to put state of the art components in laptops at the expense of weight. You can't get light machine (<2kg) with top configs at a price a lot cheaper than Apple.
c.f. Fujitsu's SH line laptop / Sony's new VAIO Z's etc.

Of course, if yours is deemed to be a desktop replacement that will be fine :)

I have to say i'm very disappointed with this "update" of the 13'' MBP. For a PROfessional product it is aimed way too much at consumers to be of any use for professional users.

I was looking forward to the updated MBPs, but since i do need a really portable notebook, being on the road at least 220 days a year, i guess i will order a Sony Vaio Z series now, Core i5/i7, up to full HD screen, weighs a pound less than the apple 13'' and still has an NVidia 330M, not to mention built in 3G-network.

Then get a 15" and dont complain. Core 2 duo isnt slow, its fairly fast. Or switch to dell/hp. Theyre still using pentium on some models

You know Pentium is just a marketing name now and those Pentium cpu's that they use at the very least are based on the intel Core Duo line, but in many of the case Core 2 based, but with lower cache, fsb, and the such.

no DVD drive, so there is room for one.
The 13in Acer TimelineX with the optional ATI 5650gpu with switchable gpu, optical drive, and battery life that is close to 8-9 hours from what I could make out from the European review. Plus with the i5, and 5650 gpu it should be coming at around $1200usd.

Yeah, the 13" is still very cool but I just can't part with that much money for a C2D. I'll have to weigh the Thinkpad when it comes it because of course they don't tell you after all the upgrades. No doubt the Macbook Pro is a better designed computer. However after all this nail biting and using a Chinese brand "TCL LIFE3" computer for months I have to put my mind at ease.

Now Michelle to answer your question: yes, a 13" MBP with Core2Duo will do all just fine. However, you mentioned that you edit video. A Core2Duo will be just fine, however an i5 will be faster for something like that. Somethign you also want consider is screen space. I'm in highschool and I'm on Microsoft word all the time. I wish I had a 15" computer because I always have to resize the windows when I want to see two documents (to the point where I can't see all of the document). With what you are doing, I really think more screen space is a killer feature that I wish I had. The 15" also has much better speakers but idk if that's important for you. Choose whatever you are willing to pay for, but if I were you, I'd get the low end 15" with the core i5.

I would think that something like video editing is often done at a desk, and in that case you can buy any monitor up to 1920 x 1200 or 2048 x 1152 pixels and plug it into any MacBook and use that.

Hi
My 13" MB got stolen on December and i've been waiting by the minute for this update. I am a bit disappointed I must say.

If you made a copy of Apple's previous price list, this is what you would find: The cheapest MacBook today is $1199. The cheapest MacBook last week was $1199. The difference is 4GB instead of 2GB (add $50), 250GB drive instead of 160GB (add $50), a much improved graphics card (add ??? dollars), 2.4 GHz instead of 2.26 (you used to pay $150 more for 2.53 GHz, so we can say 2.4 would cost $75), 10 hours battery life instead of 7. A comparable MacBook last week would have cost at least $1500.

Dude, check out Alienware M11x. 1GB Discrete graphics card in an 11" laptop.

They must sell loads and loads of them, right?

I disagree

A comparable mb would have cost what it costs now. The old mbp was using cheaper hardware than it was when it first was released...obviously yet the price remained the same

Apple had been selling old hardware for premium prices making a huge profit margin

:) anyway, enjoy the great time with your new laptop!

I really hope that the 13" model will come up with some better improvement but I'm afraid we'll have to wait until end of 2010....:(

+1, and you priced those upgrades at DIY (2GB RAM installed) is more than $50.

Case in point, today I went in on a 13" 2.4GHZ with a $320 GB HD + a 3 year Applecare, and (with a 8% corporate discount) came out at $1,401.

The same setup on Monday sans additional battery life, video, -2GB RAM, smaller HD, and lesser processor +the nice DVI upgrade would have been $100 less BEFORE my applecare.

Why does everyone believe Apple owes them something?

new 13" MBP is 6 weeks old

I bought a new 13" MBP, the base model released today. Call me an idiot or whatever for settling for C2D. I like it.

Maybe an indication of how long since these came off the manufacturing line, here's a screenshot from CoconutBattery. Don't know how it figures "Age of your Mac", but mine says 6 weeks.

Only because it was 9 month old tech still being sold at the same price as the day it was released.

Why the awkward sense of entitlement? How is a 'potential' buyer cheated by something that didn't even exist 24 hours ago?

You've effectively agreed that $1500 today buys much more than it did last week. Moreover, the law of demand would suggest that given Apples sales figures for Macbooks, their isn't a shortage of consumers willing to buy a 'outdated' $1500 laptop.

I'm was just saying it was overpriced last week. That's all.
