Well you gotta say that... you think he's going to release some new product and say, "Well... I really don;t care about it very much."??

He basically said that about the Apple TV when he called it a hobby. Which sucks, because frankly, I have more use for what the Apple TV is and could be than a touch screen laptop with no keyboard.

Steve Jobs told me in a "dream";

Beyond the obvious...

* Hang it on the wall, plug in speakers.
* Dock it overnight, read morningpaper.
* Student? Buy education litteratur cheaper - highlight text with your index, get the highlights collected in a new (traceable) document.
* Swap documents? Bump with another tablet.
* Photoshopper? Throw away your wacom..
* Buisness? It got a really nifty contact/calender with a whole new approach..

And - one more thing...

anyone else thinking about a tablet, then just visualising how you use it?

for example, I'm on a MacBook Pro right now, the screen is at a nice angle in front of me, it can be adjusted and I type in my message with no spellgni mtskaes!

If I was on a tablet, I'd be either holding it in one hand, and tapping away with my toe-thumb and messing it all up (a-la iPhone interface)
...or maybe I can lay it flat on the desk and type with two hands directly onto the screen (but with no feedback from the virtual keys) I'd also have a stiff neck from looking directly down at my desk.

What about some sort of stand at the back, which would prop the tablet up and project a Star Trek holographic keyboard onto my desk? That would be good!

...just thinking about ergonomics, and why, regardless of features, tablets aren't really for everybody...

As hard as it is to believe, I have a feeling there will be something happening on Wednesday that has nothing to do with anything most of us are talking about. I can't even speculate. I can't imagine Steve would be this excited/nervous about a tablet.

I think I have figured out why Jobs would say something like that -- it's education reading related. I hope that's not why though.. I hope it's the UI that's that good because I don't think gadgets are what is holding our educational system back.

I think he must be thinking about the eco impact the tablet could have, if it could revolutionize magazines, newspapers, and textbooks.

the changes to the education system, news, and savings in print could be pretty important!

I'm with you. I do my journal reading on my laptop so I don't have to print off thousands of pages of articles every semester, but I haven't gotten comfortable reading magazines that way. Especially considering most of my magazine reading is done in the bathroom...

Where to watch

Hello all, does anyone know what time this event will occure (PST) and is there anywhere it can be watched live or slightly time delayed or will I have to wait till after it is over for the video to be posted on Apple's or some other site? Thanks to all!!

Still a "dream"?

I think I have figured out why Jobs would say something like that -- it's education reading related. I hope that's not why though.. I hope it's the UI that's that good because I don't think gadgets are what is holding our educational system back.

Of course it is.
It´s a whole new way to read - no paper! It´s pretty hard to turn the mass market into a whole new way to digest something that always have had the same shape, form & texture. Aim for the poor one, the students who need a way to get cheaper education-litterature.

But - It´s also the best way to get a new solid base of customer into your domain. Catch them when they´re young.
They learned that with the ipod, the iphone and they will take it all the way with the new iplate(!).

i'm not sure this is something Jobs would say.
"If I were running Apple, I would milk the Macintosh for all it's worth -- and get busy on the next great thing."
-- Steve Jobs, Fortune Magazine, Feb. 19, 1996

"The products suck! There's no sex in them anymore!"
-- Steve Jobs, BusinessWeek, July 1997

"It's really hard to design products by focus groups. A lot of times, people don't know what they want until you show it to them."
-- Steve Jobs, BusinessWeek, May 25 1998

Agreed - but I think this rumor about it being "the most important thing" Jobs has ever done is just hype.

People thought the iPod was a pointless bauble, yet it turned out to be the most critical product to Apple's success ever.

For Apple to completely transform - and dominate - mobile computing (which is the future of computing) would, in fact, would be the most important thing Jobs has ever done.

And what if there's no tablet despite the rumors (at least not on the 27th)? Everyone will be mad at Apple because they didn't get something the rumors promised :p

The hype has been so huge over the last few months and weeks that I would be amazed if we don't see the tablet, but I'm not getting my hopes too high - less of a disappointment if this turns out to be a "false alarm".

Steve and his ego...

Of course this is the most important thing Jobs has ever done. This has always been the case since the founding of Apple to the introduction of the first mac, imac, ipod, iphone etc. Everything Steve does turns to gold right?:D Well this "tablet" had better deliver or I will be one unhappy camper. Just bought another 10 blocks of :apple: over the last two months. tablet or not :apple: should hit $400 per share over the next 2-3 years. Either way I am diversified in my investments and should :apple: hurt badly I will be fine but I have a a feeling that :apple: will roar and this "tablet device" will only help Apple and it's empire.

Really?

You're making a jumbo iPod Touch that can read premium online news, video, and e-books.... and that's the most important thing you've ever done? That's either incredibly short-sighted or incredibly narcissistic.

Short-sightedness throws accusation of short-sightedness. Universe implodes.

The sweet spot for consumer electronics is less than $200. That's really the "spousal-approval" threshold. $199 is when things start moving.

So THAT is why big screen TVs never caught on......

Oh, wait.

Wow. These are flavor flav hype levels! Apple created the hype..

I wish people would stop accusing Apple of creating all the hype. Where are the Apple ads? Press releases?

Apple didn't say a word about the tablet for the entire time this hype-storm has been building. They STILL haven't said anything about a tablet or even admitted that it exists. All we have is a RUMOR stating that a couple of people overheard Steve Jobs saying something.

Apple has stood quietly by while bloggers, analysts, etc have created the hype.

apple does things more expensive not cheaper though. If Jobs was an inventor and discovered some new material to make readers dirt cheap I think you would have a point. If Jobs is touting his uber expensive tablet as saving literature I think he is deluding himself.

It reminds me a lot of Dean Kamen. Wanting to accomplish something noble isn't the same thing as actually accomplishing something noble.

There is one way to end the hype though.. just announce the thing already. Problem solved.

That is quite a prediction. I don't have that much faith in the market for the next few years.

Yes it is very bullish and optimistic rating for AAPL. Albeit I am confident that AAPL is a relatively safe investment, that is assuming SJs luck does not run out. For Apple to falter badly would require either AAPL completely loosing the smartphone market or this "table device" would have to be an absolute debacle that would make the Apple TV look like a blockbuster hit. Even then Apple would still be very solvent and stand more than a fighting chance to survive over the next few years until the market rebounds.

"This will be the most important thing I've ever done"

Maybe he isnt talking about the tablet... maybe he hand selected a new CEO to take over whom he trusts, and trained, and feels that they can maintain the future of apple

How old are Steve's kids....

Waking up, are we?

Of course it will be cheaper for the student to download a digital file of a book than buy a paperversion of the same book.
Of course it will increase magazinereaders if mags are cheaper in downloads than paper.
Of course most people will think it´s outragous to belive this can ever exchange a physical paper - that´s why they start with the young...
Of course someone will hit the DELETE button and all our history is erased.

But hey - Just go with it.

Agreed, except I don't think Jobs has that much influence over the stock value at this point. I could be wrong, but I feel Steve has done his part in rebuilding Apple.

Agreed 100%. I don't think the tablet could fail the company unless they are pouring more into it than we can imagine. Highly doubtful though. I am not as confident in a tablet as many others are, especially if the price isn't right. Unlike the iPhone, I think tablets will have to be around netbook prices for average people (less/non-techie people) to really start buying them.

I really want to believe that this device will be something new/different but from everything that seems to have gotten out about, it just screams "jumbo iPod Touch". I know I'll probably be tarred and feathered here for saying that.....so I hope I'm wrong.....but that's what it feels like at this point.

You think it's the paper making books expensive?

How much of a savings will you get with digital books? What percentage of education cost is books? Seems like a minute amount. Again.. this isn't addressing the real problems with the educational system.
