If that's who lines up to buy it, Apple is in real trouble. What they need are Windows users and non-iPhone users to line up for one. Jobs could release a turd and the faithful will get in line.

Absolutely agree.

It's easy to sell to a captive audience, but Apple don't want to just milk their existing user base, they want to grow it.

They have so much momentum, the last thing they'll be thinking about is taking a break from growth.

Wouldn't the statement have been true each of those times?

arn

Not sure. Can we really say that the iPod was more important than the Apple II (for its time) ? Although if we credit the Apple II to Woz, then I would agree.

Anyone who thinks/hopes this will run OS X is going to be disappointed.
This is going to be "the only gadget you will ever need." It will NOT be a Mac/PC alternative for anyone doing serious work.

Keep your expectations in check, and you will enjoy this.

My expectations for a Tablet is that it has a touch-screen. I won't be hurt and threaten Steve on his life if this thing doesn't offer me anything I need or want, but if it does it will be cool.

A lot of things have to be right for this to work.

wow considering the awesomeness of the iPod and MacBook and OSX at the time... i'm guessing it will be that good we will jizz in our pants? i'll be glad to see Steve on stage though :D

Going back to Apple was the most important thing Steve Jobs ever did. All this talk about the tablet is just hype. That strategy has worked pretty well for Apple. Guess we will see how it does with the tablet.

What makes something 'most important'

thats what we should really be asking.....sure it will be a great product.......but could it be the most important thing he has ever done because this will be the last time we see him take the keynote ???????

I'm hoping not but sometimes individuals make huge statements because they really do mean them - personally.

:confused::confused:

This is pretty awesome, if it's true. Steve has a huge ego, and he never shies away from ripping an idea to shreds if he sees any flaws in it.

I personally don't have much interest in a tablet, but I'm beginning to think that this thing will be cool enough that I'll suddenly want one after I see it :)

this is what i've been thinking about the tablet to. i think the speech recognition will be the most revolutionary part about the tablet. idk about the under $600 part though haha.

i hope it doesn't waste time on Speech Recognition... i think it is quite accurate on the iPhone, but i feel like a right retard talking to my phone... don't think it will be cool to talk to a 7-10" tablet lol, exciting time Wednesday going to start saving my pennies and treat myself to one after my summer exams :D

My own predictions...

I'm guessing three tablets at different price points:

1) A seven inch tablet w/out camera and 16GB memory at $499
2) A ten inch tablet w/camera and 32 GB memory at $599
3) a ten inch tablet w/camera and 64 GB memory at $699

I bet the tablet(s) will replace the low-end laptops (macbook air, etc.) and they'll introduce new features into the high end laptops to keep those priced at a premium...

You're hoping to be satisfied with the tablet, but you weren't impressed enough with the iPhone to get one? Good luck with that...

Ya if you passed on the iphone then i wouldnt get your hopes up that was the bigest jump in tec this decade (yes there is arguments )

Since I understand why I don't want a iPhone, yes I certainly can say that I feel I'll be impressed with the tablet. I have no use for a new phone, and certainly don't want to pay $100/month for a iPhone plan when I'm happy with my $8/month plan. The tablet is a completely different product with likely a different audience than the iPhone. For the non-phone features of the iPhone, the small screen is too limiting for me for the kinds of things I care about being able to do. I do have a free iPod touch, so have gotten to try it some, but I'll likely sell it because it has been very lackluster for myself. It's a good product for people that need that kind of thing, but it doesn't do much for me.

This product has potential to be really groundbreaking.

Apple are in a perfect position and the timing is perfect for it to really kick off in a big way.

It is a very important product as it will revolutionise the publicising industry. Books, newspapers, magazines. There will be a new age of global newspapers, magazines and potentially a renaissance in modern literature. It will be considerably cheaper for amateur writers to become hugely successful with an ebook product.

And Apple will make the ebook/tablet segment desirable.

This isn't a totally unique product and there already exists competition, but Apple will be leading the way. I can imagine why Steve Jobs would make a statement like he allegedly did.

It's not a phone, or a laptop. It's a media device. I can see the excitement.

I wish I had the time and know how to make a cool history like that. :(

One of the comments nailed exactly why that article is just an empty, clueless diatribe:

I like how you dismiss the years of tablet rumors up to ‘07 as utterly baseless, then straight up acknowledge that the iPhone project originated as a “Safari Pad” that had been under development for years but never released. Uh…

If this thing is addictive and puts a screen in front of people's faces 24/7, Steve's "most important" accomplishment will have been to turn humanity into those fatties in Pixar's WALL-E. You'll know the transition has begun when they start selling accessories that allow you to mount an Apple tablet on a Segway, and when people in cafés talk to eachother across the table via tablet video cams.

Is there anywhere to watch the keynote online or television?

Never seen one before....will Apple be streaming the event on their site?

Bull! Even the MacBook Pro's can only handle 8gb of memory!

Unless you mean storage capacity...

At any rate, I love the no spoiler option, I hate having to wait until 8pm to watch the damn thing.

As hard as it is to believe, I have a feeling there will be something happening on Wednesday that has nothing to do with anything most of us are talking about. I can't even speculate. I can't imagine Steve would be this excited/nervous about a tablet.

No you can't watch it live on TV or online. You can see live streaming text feeds (some with pictures) on macrumors, macworld, etc.
