I certainly didn't say they don't have other ways of getting that info. But having a LOG that is ready and waiting means that they can conveniently access past movements even if they had no reason to have been previously surveilling a particular person. It basically amounts to a nationwide database of constant movement tracking that any law enforcement agency can access at will, without prior identification of their target.

There are plenty of nationwide databases, the difference being that they're single, centralised databases in one location, that you don't have access to. You don't know if someone's going through your call records with your provider or digging around your credit score. In this case the data is (solely by all accounts) being stored on your personal phone/computer. You have a much better chance of knowing if someone's looking through it when the database is in your pocket.

Leaving aside the fact that the vast majority of people simply aren't interesting enough to warrant any attention, police can't just seize your belongings and go through your iPhone. They need a judge to approve a warrant for the search - they have to have a reason and a purpose to be going through your data, it's not simply done on a whim.

Sorry, but Google is far worse

At Black Hat last year, there was a talk given called "These are the Permissions You're Looking For" about Android based devices. Simply by reading the log file present on Android based phones, they were able to track their entire trip from the Bay area to Las Vegas. They had just as much, and in my opinion more, information than what you can find in the Apple database. And this is available to EVERY app on the phone. All it needs is READ_LOG permissions! And seriously, how many users are going to question that? "It's for diagnoses reasons so we can report back errors!" Android doesn't need a fat database with this information when they make it 100% available to everyone through the log file!!

No one cares that Google does this, and more, because Google is "free," "open," and they "love you."

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_1 like Mac OS X; en-gb) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8G4 Safari/6533.18.5)

Love the semi-cheeky reply jobs gave XP

Exactly. Google chooses not to answer and everyone just ignores it. But they're ready to charge Apple's door. Which is stupid anyway.

You're always being logged now a days. The folks with the tin foil may have been right in some way or another. But that's the truth.

This information has not impacted my life so I'm going back to it and kind of ignore this.

As has been explained to you, many times before by people who understand more about these things than you - the data exists as a cache to speed up location finding and reduce the power required to determine your location. This has been made clear by Apple engineers at WWDC.

Just because you don't understand something, it doesn't mean it's pointless

I understand that the Apple apologists will defend them at any cost.

Minus the fact that Google did response and answer the question.
Apple on the other had has said nothing.

Oh yeah, I forgot, you're a troll. Only a troll would claim to know better than a guy with a CV/resume like this:

Software Engineer at Apple
Security Research Assistant at Research In Motion
Cellular Technologies Intern at Apple
Embedded Systems Software Developer at Research In Motion
Embedded Systems Software Tester at Research In Motion

Linked In Profile

Maybe when you hit 16, you'll go to onto higher education, study Computer Science, spend a few years working at some notable companies gaining experience and then, maybe then, you might just have enough experience and understanding to convince me you're more worth listening to than this guy.

For that to happen, you'd have to get off these forums and get back to your homework though. Your call.

Sorry I couldn't resist :d

Your iPhone collects it...not Apple. Read the article.

Oh, of course..., that's why it's a SMART phone. It decided to do it on its own.

It also has a loooong memory, it remembers my locations for MONTHS.

Nah, nothing to do with Apple. It's the damned phone.

That's how I see it too.

Of course you would, you're both a pair of Android-owning trolls.

The difference between your iPhone collecting it and Apple collecting it is not a matter of responsibility - of course Apple is responsible for the iPhone.

It's a simple matter of privacy. Can Apple see where I'm going? No, because this data isn't being sent back to Apple. Can my iPhone see where I'm going? Yes. Is my iPhone a sentient being? No.

Sorry, no Android here. I'm just a rational consumer who sees the negatives along with the positives.

Self-confessed troll:

Maybe I'll get the cell next to Steve and I can get some inside info and post it here for you guys. And if you check out my posts in the other forums, you'll see that I'm not really a troll at all. I just find it amusing how so many here get all defensive about anything Apple does that is questionable.
