I don't believe this, 18 pages of pure nonsense, people are either paranoid or have a phobia of a military-grade location protection. Grow up, every and each one of you is tracked everyday and on average you get caught on 300 different CCTV cameras. If you want absolute privacy, go live in a bunker.

"Okay then, Steve, if Apple's not tracking iPhone user's movements, please send us the consolidated.db from your iPhone."

Even if Apple isn't uploading it to their servers, they ARE still tracking iPhones.

Like the old adage: If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

If your iPhone tracks your movements, but Apple doesn't upload the tracking information to their servers, does Apple still track you?

The answer to both is "Yes".

Basically, I imagine Apple will have an option in the next iOS release to turn this off entirely or limit it to just the 1 or 2 last known locations (to help with cell/gps locating).

There really no reason it has to keep this log for as long as you don't wipe your iPhone.

To Whom It May Concern,

1. We don't have to "get off the grid" or "stop using ..." etc.;
corporations have to respect our privacy.

2. We don't care that "the Mothership" has not received it;
corporations have to respect our privacy.

3. We don't have to search for fine distinctions between corporations and
government, if any nowadays;
corporations have to respect our privacy.

4. We don't care if you don't respect your privacy;
corporations have to respect our privacy.

5. We don't care if you don't respect our privacy;
corporations have to respect our privacy.

I hope this helps,

Whatever

Yeah right Steve, like when you said the 4.0 update didn't cause problems on the 3G. Still waiting form my phone I bought a year ago to work right again. What a scam artist.

I loved the way people said that it wasn't sent anywhere but was used to track tower capability. Whom, if it is not sent back then how can they use it to see how towers are working?

There you go, being logical. Most seem to be of the opinion that the information is merely collected and stored on your phone for no reason at all.

You know, you both could have saved some time and just written:
"I don't understand how A-GPS, cell towers, or cell phones in general work"

The iPhone doesn't track every single location? What's this then: http://petewarden.github.com/iPhoneTracker/

Freaky. It totally tracked a road trip I made through New Mexico a few weeks ago. That in itself isn't weird since it's a phone and all.

It found the backup file made on my iPhone 4. I also had a 3GS with me that is also activated. any way I can get this app to see that phone also?

Okay, this mail is either fake, Steve Jobs is lying to us or he is out of his mind. Whats so hard to understand, Steve? We DON´T want our phones to track our every move without permission. I don´t care if Google does it, as i don´t use Android phones. As an Apple customer i do care about it happening on the iPhone.
The very least I expect is an iOS Update which stops tagging us, or giving us an option to opt-out.

As i read on Google and you can search it yourself, last year Apple was sued for the same thing, and worse, they collected political views., which involves allot more then location data, demanded in court are emails, chats and key strokes sensed by software to monitor political information on users, whether or not this was a plot within the Government to cover up anything by tracking down political opponents is left until the court date which i believe is July something,

This new location data issue has been raised to a national alert with Congress as of yesterday.

that information is strictly for law enforcement, imagine a country attacking us having access to spots they can bomb to knock out civilian or military communications , this is a national issue

Any sources for any of that? How's that tin foil hat?

How does that sentence in any way follow up from the material you quoted?

Wow, this issue is really getting out of hand. I will just believe Steve instead of worrying my head off. Goodnight.

As has been explained to you, many times before by people who understand more about these things than you - the data exists as a cache to speed up location finding and reduce the power required to determine your location. This has been made clear by Apple engineers at WWDC.

Just because you don't understand something, it doesn't mean it's pointless

Maybe you could shed some light on this for me before I switch to a Droid.

This guy's a douche. The "Do something about it or I'll go to the competition / report you to my mommy and daddy / put your childish threat here" argument is so lame, as if a company of Apple's size gives a ***** about ONE customer's opinion. Whining Child! Get the memo, you're just an ant!!!

Go have fun with your droid. If you're switching over this, you shouldn't have an iPhone in the first place! See how Google takes care of your privacy...

"used to track tower capability"… What is that then? You seem to be out of your depth on this topic. For the explanation on the purpose of this data, see https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/12432603/ It references information given by an Apple engineer who wrote the code that makes your iPhone understand where it is.

Who has easy access to that info even on dumb phones. That is not the issue here.

I certainly didn't say they don't have other ways of getting that info. But having a LOG that is ready and waiting means that they can conveniently access past movements even if they had no reason to have been previously surveilling a particular person. It basically amounts to a nationwide database of constant movement tracking that any law enforcement agency can access at will, without prior identification of their target.

So, your argument is: "If you are being oppressed, no big deal. Just accept it." ??

Why should anyone need guns to take over such a docile population!
