I give up.

im getting the touch with no camera even though in six months its gonna have a cam, mic and oleophobic coating.... But I have one thing to say. Its not a gaming machine and should not be marketed as one. the games are not on the level of most psp and ds games.

Kleer technology should have made an appearence

Well for my money I'd say that Apple have overlooked the whole theme of the event - that being music, in terms of hardware innovation and addition. Sure the iPod Touch has an accelerometer in and a NIKE+ chip, great, but what about music.

What about the addition of a Kleer chip (http://www.kleer.com/applications/nanoadaptor.php) which would provide THE wireless solution that any portable music device requires - that of its ability to wireless stream music for long periods (10hrs) and at lossless quality.

I think the argument against this would be that there are only a handful of headphone with this technology built into them currently on the market, the best of which being Sennheiser's MX-W1s and the cost of such headphones.

Well I think its a chicken and egg story, but I would dearly love to see such a chip included in the iPod line sometime next release. I can't pretend that Apple haven't noticed or been approached by people over this, I can only hope they're picking the right time - which I thought could be now.

Apple also focused on the headphones, with the addition of partnering and releasing the control adapter as a standalone product, but lets not kid ourselves that cables are a pain and that the headsets themselves could easily incorporate such functionality - or at least to forfeit it in the interest of untethered convenience.

P.S. If it ain't got a Mario game on it, Nintendo don't need to worry.

" Technical issues with the product itself delaying introduction??
Hmm they've been manufacturing these things for a bit longer than a week I suspect, it's more a case of quantities or supply line delays rather than the product itself.
You think that before distribution they'll crack each box open and get out a screwdriver??? or plug every one of them into a cradle and re-image them, box and send them on their way??
They make millions of these things each week, up to 3 months prior to introduction...
The only delay would have been earlier on in manufacture, for example a late start in the factory due to manufacture procedure delays." ( I found from one of the post b4)

I am not familiar with the manufacturing process, it seems that the iPod touch introduced yesterday need to take months to produce before Apple can ship them to customer. I guess it is unlikely for Apple to release of iPod Touch without camera due to last minute production problem. They seem didn't plan to add camera in 3rd Gen. Touch.

If Apple brought out a time travelling space ship for $100 people like you would still find something to whine about.

And if Apple brought out 15 pound bags of human feces for $25,000, people like you would be saying it's the greatest invention ever.

I'm glad you said that, especially the ipod, because it's an occasion to pull out my favorite macrumors thread ever, the thread reacting to the ipod announcment

a few select quotes

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/apples-new-thing-ipod.500/

So there,if you were on macrumors back then you'd have seen a bunch of people complaining because they didn't get what they want,so nothing really different from what you generally see now lol

Wow, that was a pretty epic post, thanks!

do you really believe that crap about no camera on the touch for price reasons? Please. they'll have a camera on them between the end of this year and before summer 2010.

Welcome to the world of marketing! MOST people will believe it. And really he does make a point, all these ideas of putting camera's on certain models, and bringing back the 16gb to add to the line alongside the others, and putting gps on only the most expensive one... They're all RIDICULOUS. Honestly, having 2 different CPU's in the line is enough, but having 4 different models with different features would cause WAY to much buyer confusion.

didn't have a chance to read through all of this thread, however, perhaps the reason for no camera is to add one to a tablet device and have that be the media tablet with camera.

this way you have a phone, gaming device,, smaller ipods and a tablet.

The only reason to put a camera on a tablet is a front facing one for iChat etc. You don't want to be waving a tablet around trying to take pics.

I really think that Apple has missed the boat on this not puting one on the i Pod Touch.

People use cameras on devices a lot. They would surely cover the cost of putting in the camera just from the increase in Apps sales for camera based Apps.

The touch is not a gaming machine. its a mobile gaming device.

I'm glad to hear he's trying to gain weight - he looked really frail at the conference. Here's to his health.

Apple-".... One More Thing..... it plays music as well as the gaming feature."

Apple - "One more thing, you can use the built in Photos app with your... um... did we mention it's a gaming device?!"

Same here! 16GB 1st gen Touch, and I feel absolutely no need to upgrade. I am still using 2.x software on it as well! I can't even justify the $4.95 for the 3.1 upgrade.

This is the first time in, well, as long as I can remember, that I have been this far behind on technology and not felt behind at all.

Same situation with me. I have a lovely 16gb iPod Touch that is absolutely perfect for what it does. I just wanted it to do more and was ready to spring for a new one if it had camera/video and maybe real GPS. Now, I have no reason to buy a new one... so it will be a no-apple christmas at my house.

It's not that i need a camera. I have a very nice Sony dSLR and a nice compact digital camera as well. It was a convenience thing, my iPod goes about everywhere with me. I certainly was not planning to use an iPod camera for anything approaching quality. But one can take some nice photos with a 3.2 gb camera.

And, don't tell me to get an iPhone. ATT sucks were I live, and where I travel. It is not even worth considering. Now, maybe if Verizon ends up with an iPhone I will reconsider. But until then...

No sale apple. I think you blew it on this decision... if you care to know.

If they really want it to be a gaming device they need to add the digital compass, and how they can sell the 8GB without the enhanced Graphics support and still claim to be trying to offer a cheap game machine is very counter intuitive. The Nintendo DSi has a camera now. Considering the types of games that are going to make it to the iPod Touch the camera, the compass, and the enhanced graphics support are glaring omissions. While the Higher capacity models fall well outside the price range of a handheld gaming machine and still lack the compass, which the iPod needs as a gaming device given its lack of input methods. As a gaming machine the iPod touch is over priced and gimped. As a multimedia device (based on the iPhone OS) its still gimped, by the lack of GPS Camera and compass.

Wow. Are you serious? Let's See what the $400 touch has that the $150 nano doesn't. Bigger screen, wifi, Nike+ receiver, 8x the memory, multi touch, OSX, Bluetooth . . .

There is more to making an iPod than just a camera.

All of that stuff minus the flash memory (which isn't that expensive anymore) is in the cheapo 8 GB model of the touch. Can't be the reason.

adding a vga video camera with a cheap small chip to the nano may be fine.

but adding that to a $400 touch would be a PR desaster.

you have to add a good camera chip with a good lens and a little flash or the touch gets percieved as a ****** camera.

You mean the same way they added a camera without flash to the 3GS and marketed it as if there were no tomorrow?

BS

I love Apple products and own many.... but I hate how Apple thinks their customers are stupid sheeple. I guess to a large degree they are right, seeing how many people picked up the original iPhone (including myself) at $600 a piece and it wasn't even 3G, and then buying another one the year after.

Ice Cream!

I love that Steve's eating ice cream! Steve, if you're reading this, I recommend Haagen-Dazs Caramel Cone. Eat it up, buddy!

:cool::cool::cool:

Jobs is clearly talking about the tablet and saying they are polishing it makes it seem like they are almost ready with it. January annoucment for sure IMO

Crap... I just realized what this means...

Another 4 months of tablet rumors

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

I was surprised...

I was surprised that there was not a camera, but to be honest I really don't care. I have a iPhone 3G its got the still camera, good enough.

The thing that got me was right at the end of the keynote. When Steve is saying "leave and don't talk to me" more or less... He says "we'll see you soon." Not what he says , but how he says it.... event in the near future that I don't know about???

Anybody else notice this? Any thoughts?

I am getting the feeling that a media type event my come in October that will finally announce a new Apple TV / video subscription service. Add to this iTunes LP and Extra integration, 1080p and maybe an apps store and we're in business.

Don't expect it though. For the most part, Apple has used the past two years for refinements, not revolutions (outside of the App Store and Macbook Air, which led to multitouch and unibody designs).

It seems strange to me that they didn't add a camera to the iPod touch, yet they advertise the "Camera Bag" app on this page...

...here's a screenshot

The Touch will have a camera soon enough, if you watch the entire show from Wednesday clearly something went horribly wrong with the Touch camera production line. After the Introduction of the new iTunes platform the entire show was a train wreck which clearly was not intended. Any lay person could clearly tell that something had been taken out of the script at the last minute.

when you read a lot from nothing, you don't speak with 100% confidence.

I've ALSO got an opinion about the iPod Touch not receiving a camera - How about you guys that are whining about it, accept that it didn't get one and either don't buy one, or buy one. Simple as pie. Mmm, pie.

No seriously... I don't get the whole "Bawww! Touch didn't get a camera" thing.

Chances are... If you use an iPod Touch as your portable media player, you have a cell phone that isn't an iPhone.

Chances are also that phone you have, has a MUCH better camera on it than what would've been included in an iPod Touch - probably less than 2 MP. I mean think about it, would Apple want to put the same quality camera/video recorder they have in their 3GS and offer it on a product that doesn't require monthly service and contracts???

So the moral is - be happy with your cell phone camera, and with your 1st Gen or 2nd Gen iPod Touch.

I actually already carry around a compact P&S so I don't care much for a camera on the iPod Touch, I still want to upgrade to the 3rd Gen Touch for the new processor and graphics though, I have a Gen 1 touch ATM, and the speed improvement would be up to 100%!!

Is that $100 with a camera or without. If the later then Job's has lost the plot.....A time travelling space ship without a camera (or an FM tuner for that matter) is a joke.....

Yes I meant with a camera... 10.2 Terapixel with 7000x optical zoom, no less.
