didn't have a chance to read through all of this thread, however, perhaps the reason for no camera is to add one to a tablet device and have that be the media tablet with camera.

this way you have a phone, gaming device,, smaller ipods and a tablet.

Considering what you get in a Mac today, they are cheaply-made aka I would have agreed with you totally up until Apple decided to replace steady intel chipsets with crappy nVidia/nForce ones and nix all the other features now gone. Especially without any reasonably, relative change in price. Today they are, cheap machines clad in expensive 'armor', nothing more. Overblown netbooks if you will. If you know about the previous build-quality of older Mac's, you know what I'm talking about. Sure, you paid $$$ for it back then but you also got what you've paid for.

point taken, as I've had the chance to use quite a few legacy Apple products and can attest to the fact that Apple build some solid, albeit very expensive machines in the past... but in my opinion, I would much prefer a solid, well-built, and environmentally "green" machine with internals comparable to a PC being sold at a fraction of the price, than a flimsy, poorly-made machine (which typifies an unfortunate majority of PC's that I've used).

and I'm not sure which portions of the Intel chipset you're referring to, but in regards to their switching to nVidia's 9400M integrated graphics chip vs. the original Intel GMA chip, the performance increase is hardly something I'd deem "crappy"... as for the rest of the internals, I can't say much since I'm not all that familiar with them, but even if OS X was made available for installation on all systems, including PC's, I'd still stick with buying Macs since I can't be bothered with the poor build quality of a majority of PC's- though this may just be a matter of my personal preference.

I think the updates today were pretty good, but this Touch camera thing is BS I think.

I think they had to have had some production problem like the rumors said. Price is BS, those camera modules cost like $2 and the nano is cheaper, so how does that argument work Steve? He is just giving a PR answer. Watch them refresh the touch in January after the holidays with a camera! Mark my words! Even if they really weren't planning to, the people are speaking right now and they will listen.

Haha ya i completely agree.

I can just picture Phil Schiller talking in January:

"... We have been listening to our customers over the past few months and they LOVEEEE having a camera on their ipod nanos. So we thought, why not give this great ground breaking feature to our ipod touches! We challenged our engineers to incorporate a camera into the ipod touch without having to make it any bigger.... yada yada yada"

The number one feature I would like to see to added to the iPhone/iPodTouch is backup of my computer to the iPhone/iPodTouch. I want mobile nightly backup of my data that I carry with me. The storage space is there.

Note that to be useful this needs to simply work like the file system on the MacOS. A partition on the iPodTouch should mount on the desktop of the computer and have backup by hand, by 3rd party programs like DejaVu or TimeMachine. This should work with PPC, Intel and all versions of OSX.

I wish we could keep your post at the top of MacRumors for all that visit the site. I think you are dead on!!! This will happen down the road and you nailed the exact way they are going to announce it.

Not going to happen and you wouldn't want the nano camera anyhow. They are not going to release a phoneless iPhone.

I cant see why it could not have a gps chip, compass, camera etc. The Iphone would continue to be the top of the line product, a phone that you carry around with you all day and the Itouch for everyone else that does not want to have a phone but wants a similar experience. Keep a couple of cheaper versions without the extras and have a couple of more expensive versions with most of what the Iphone has, two different markets and keep everyone happy.

Itouch gaming experience that's a joke surely. Its very entertaining and quite useful but a gaming tool never.

As many of you know Steve is Vegetarian and he only eat fish (very little)... how can he gain weight???

Vegetarian != Vegan. He already said it, he is eating ice cream, which is made with cream, and cream is full of calories. He will gain weight this way, trust me!

Anyone know if an iPhone 3G without an AT&T plan can be used just like an iPod touch? I'm just interested in it working over Wifi but having access to the camera and GPS. I'm sure there is someone out there looking to unload theirs and buy a 3GS.

Yes it can. I gave my 3G to my parents when I got a 3GS. It works fine over WiFi and the camera works. Not sure about GPS (didn't think to try it).

why? the nano is gay.. a vga camera.. wat the hell r u suppose to film, a wall.. its only .3 megapixels.. lol what a joke

Gee, it didn't seem to bother people that have been watching SD video for more than half a century.

The interview concludes with Jobs reporting that he "feels great" and acknowledging that he needs to gain some weight and he'd been eating a lot of ice cream to accomplish that.

Glad to hear you are doing well Steve. If it's weight gain you need, I unfortunately can help you in that area and have fifty plus pounds on you in a month!

I agree with you 100%. It is funny you bring up the jaguar analogy. I use the same car when I tell people about apple but in a different way. I tell them when you use to buy a jaguar you were buying a quality car with a rich history that was worth every penny (my first jag was a 69 e-type). Now when you buy a jaguar (ford owns them) it feels like you are getting into a taurus with a big shinny jaguar on the hood. The thing feels horrible and runs like crap. They have one REAL jaguar and the rest are mass produced at the ford plants. This is truly what apple has become.

Actually Tata Motors owns them...

On the Apple store, I noticed that the 8gb Touch doesn't have Voice Control listed as a feature. I thought this is just part of the iPhone OS 3.1. Is there some extra hardware actually needed to process voice commands, other than a microphone obviously?

The iPhone 3G doesn't have it either. It likely requires a faster CPU.

Probably because 'shoots still photos at 0.3 megapixels' doesn't sound too great :)

If they can do it in the iPhone and the razor thin MacBook screen lids, they can do it in the nano. My guess is, because it is on the edge where the nano is thinner, they would have had to make it a tiny bit thicker and Steve freaked out lol. Something like that probably.

Haha ya i completely agree.

Haha nice. That is pretty much EXACTLY how it will go, I guarantee it! You are good at that. :) And they will add the ability to snap still shots to them both probably.

this is a scandal.. obviously the touch was supposed to have a camera in it and the manufacturing process had problems.. therefore it wasn't in the keynote.

Now to not drop sales horribly for the christmas season, Jobs is marketing it as a gaming device..

come on guys

Thats the way I see it. It sucks because I was all ready to buy a new ipod.

My 2g works fine, but I was already planning my new camera adventures.

I've ALSO got an opinion about the iPod Touch not receiving a camera - How about you guys that are whining about it, accept that it didn't get one and either don't buy one, or buy one. Simple as pie. Mmm, pie.

No seriously... I don't get the whole "Bawww! Touch didn't get a camera" thing.

Chances are... If you use an iPod Touch as your portable media player, you have a cell phone that isn't an iPhone.

Chances are also that phone you have, has a MUCH better camera on it than what would've been included in an iPod Touch - probably less than 2 MP. I mean think about it, would Apple want to put the same quality camera/video recorder they have in their 3GS and offer it on a product that doesn't require monthly service and contracts???

So the moral is - be happy with your cell phone camera, and with your 1st Gen or 2nd Gen iPod Touch.

1. i am not buying
2. i do have a cell phone with a camera - motorola vu30. personally, I think the 2mp camera on it sucks. it's slow (there's a delay when I want to take the picture) and oftentimes it's blurry even with decent light. so no, i don't think it would be better than the camera that they'd put in the ipod touch.
3. i think apple would put the same camera as they put in the 3GS. last year, they put a BETTER processor in the 2G ipod touch than they had in the iphone 3G, which they released just a few months before. and even if the camera wasn't as good, I have to believe they they would have the same software features built in like selective focusing and video recording. try that with any camera phone that's not a high end phone.
4. I am NOT happy with my cell phone camera. If I was, I wouldn't mind that there was no camera in the ipod touch, but I am happy to stick with my 2G ipod touch for awhile now.

I'm going to throw my hat in the ring to say that I don't think the iPhone's touchscreen makes for a good gaming device. I find that there are allot of fun novelty things you can do with it, but when it comes to real gaming like first person shooters and rpgs the touchscreen is what's really holding it back. I think touching and dragging can only be so accurate.

Assassin's creed would have taken me half the time to beat playing with a regular ps3 style controller. The touch screen is the hindrance.

If they throw a camera in the $200 iPod Touch, what justifies the $400+ price difference between the touch and iPhone? The calling ability? Don't make me laugh.

Haha I can TOTALLY see that happening.

Apple-".... One More Thing..... it plays music as well as the gaming feature."

MY FIRST GEN I-POD TOUCH KEEPS A HUMMIN. If the 64 GB had a camera, I'd have jumped, but still have 1.5 GB left on ol #1, rock on;)

Same here! 16GB 1st gen Touch, and I feel absolutely no need to upgrade. I am still using 2.x software on it as well! I can't even justify the $4.95 for the 3.1 upgrade.

This is the first time in, well, as long as I can remember, that I have been this far behind on technology and not felt behind at all.

What a surprise to learn that you're a fat-ass.

Are you blaming Obama for that, too?

Wait. Vegans doesn't eat animal product right ? Lacto-ovo-vegetarian eats animal product. So why Steve eat ice cream ? I thought the cream and stuff is from cow milk ?
