My 128K Mac...

My 128K Mac didn't limit me to a black background. I had several gloriously dithered 1-bit patterns! So Apple could do this in 1984 but not 2010? Must be a conspiracy!

Since the JB winterboard stuff didn't add the reflections, shadows, etc; this seems legit.

It would have made more sense however if Apple just disabled these additional effects, and instead went with background pictures over shadows and reflections. That's just me though; regardless, something had to give. For anyone complaining, your complaining is unfounded; your phone still functions the same as you got it feature wise, which is understandable considering you're two phone revisions behind.

I agree with the 3G, it did run like crap with the background wallpapers enabled.

My 2nd Gen iTouch, however, works just fine with both multitasking and wallpapers enabled. No slowdown whatsoever

My own experience

I jail broke my 3g yesterday with redsn0w. It enabled both multitasking and the custom background. There is a noticeable decrease in speed, but honestly it's not that bad--to me it was well worth it.

If you're frustrated by Apple's decision, try the jailbreak and see how you like it. I had never jailbroken my phone before and it was actually a lot easier than I thought it would be.

To me this reads like if you want custom wall paper please buy latest hardware... hahahahaha...

SJ is worse than Fox News and CNN combined when it comes down to telling the truth...

Well guess what Steve - I won't be buying it and will stick with 3.1.3 and old hardware until it dies and then will most likely give my money to one of your competitors :)

Love you and leave you...

Oh please do. Then the supporters of that product can listen to your unwarranted, uneducated whining.

Actually it does MUCH less, irrespective of wallpapers -- the iPhone 3G on iOS 4 is excruciatingly slow compared to iPhone 3G on iPhone OS 3. So on the whole it is doing MUCH LESS per second, minute, hour, day...

16GB 3G and never JB. 4.0 is buggy. open messages and its just a white screen...never loads the message. have to hit home button and back to messages and its fast. same with safari...not everytime..but more often then not.. ill open safari to a blank screen..hit home and back to safari..its back.

the camera is sloooooower than before...3G really does not benefit from the 128MB with iOS4

I've noticed some stuttering when the icons were flying in or out on the home screen after I enabled wallpapers on my 3G. I don't think it's enough to bother me though. But I can see how Apple might leave it out if they were looking for speed.

Odd. I'm not experiencing that at all. The performance of my 3G is about the same as ever. In the few cases where I've noticed a difference, performance is better. Why my experience is different from yours, I don't know.

...
The inclusion of custom home screen wallpapers has been questioned by a number of users, as it does not initially appear that the feature should require particularly advanced hardware....

Really? Have you ever written graphics software? Draging an icon over something lie wall paper is non-triveal. One has to store the wall paper in the RAM and hudreds of times per second compute the value of newly exposed pixels and then write those pixels into the screen. Or yuo can use some rater advanced hardware to do this. But I suspect they do this in the CPU.

How is multitaking to work if you are always neding to use the CPU for backfill pixels from moving icons? Steve has a point.

Many of us remember back when desktop computers has iPhone-likepower and we just did NOT do things back them like wall paper. Even the RAM uses for hold the wall paper can be but to better use as a disk cache or for the background task(s).

So either you DO have some fancy graphics hardware or you use a lot of CPU. the older phones had very limited hardware

This isnt as stupid as it sounds. I cant imagine the wallpaper would have helped. since I installed 4.0 my 3G has been running like a dog... And before you ask why SHOULD I deactivate Push, clear out apps and remove some content. I for one cant wait to get rid of this 2 year old dinosaur.

This thread is full of facepalm. Hard not to get angry at the level of whine over something as inconsequential as a wallpaper on a phone.

If you're not satisfied with Apple's policies and methods, get another phone. Stop polluting people's eyes with your naive diatribes.

I had iOS 4 Beta on my 2gen iPod touch (and recently was forced to downgrade to 3.1 after Beta 2 came out) and while I was using OS 4 Beta, I noticed I didnt have the customizable backgrounds. I thought it was a glitch since I was using beta. Now I read this article - thanks for nothing Apple.

Anyways, I will NOT be "upgrading" to 4.0 on my 2gen iPod touch for several reasons. 4.0 may work well for a new iPhone, but it performs slower on my current iPod touch. Certain videos upload faster with OS 3.1 than on 4.0 - if you know what I mean. Above all, my battery life drained significantly while using 4.0. I would have a 3/4 full battery in the morning, not use it all day, come home from work and it'd be at 20%.

Given all this, I can live without that new dock and folders.

Welcome to the internet! ;)

This is all bull, this is due to the fact apple know most people with an iPhone 3g will be ready for upgrading so its all about the money.

So you seriously think a large number of people will feel they have to upgrade their 3G solely because they want WALLPAPER? And there was me thinking the average age of an iPhone user was older than 12!

As I said in my post above I REFUSE to upgrade my 2gen iPod touch. I have a question for y'all though:

If I don't upgrade, will my Apps start to not work over time?

That was my experience with going from 2.0 --> 3.0. I had to reupgrade all my apps....

Why dont you just not upgrade your os?

While I was upgrading to iOS4 i knocked the cable out of my iPhone 3G. I swear I saw standard homescreen with only the Apple Apps, and the raindrops background for a split second.

When the restore finalized I got the same BS black as everybody.

I helped a friend with her 3g and without touching anything, the same happened.

Choice..

Why can't I have the option? *without jailbreak* I have the option to turn on certain battery draining functions of my iPhone. Why can't I have the option to turn on certain performance draining functions? Why the war against choice inside of the iWorld?

Who cares about a few stupid backgrounds.
It's nice Apple still adds new features to a phone that's already two years old. Every other manufacturer only releases some minor bugfixes if the phone isn't older than two months.

Why do people keep saying that homescreen backgrounds work fine on the Jailbroken 3g? I've tried both Apple's implementation and Winterboard—they're both too sluggish for continued use. I would have to borrow my girlfriend's phone because mine was too damned slow.

Do you guys—the ones calling BS on Apple—just have low standards for acceptable speed? I know this: if it takes seconds to move from one page of apps to the next, then it's unacceptable. @

Or they could have just not given 3G owners iOS 4. Do you realize how many Android devices are still on 1.6 due to carriers not upgrading?

I call FUD you can root an android phone and upgrade yourself AFAIK, does apple even give you that option?

I don't think that was his point. A lot of people simply might want to have the latest and greatest and 3g user's have the opportunity to upgrade via AT&T because their contract is about to expire.
