Why can't I have the option? *without jailbreak* I have the option to turn on certain battery draining functions of my iPhone. Why can't I have the option to turn on certain performance draining functions? Why the war against choice inside of the iWorld?

Because 95% of the iWorld community are dumb. They don't understand about performance. My mum would turn backgrounds on as they are pretty, and then she'd complain to Apple that her device was running slowly.

I think Apple would rather have a functioning device than one with a pretty background.

Who cares about a few stupid backgrounds.
It's nice Apple still adds new features to a phone that's already two years old. Every other manufacturer only releases some minor bugfixes if the phone isn't older than two months.

iPhone owners are some of the most entitled feeling people I have ever come across. Many feel like Apple owes them software updates. They don't owe you updates in reality, they could have left you at 2.0 if they wanted.

If you're not satisfied with Apple's policies and methods, get another phone. Stop polluting people's eyes with your naive diatribes.

1) Discussing pros and cons is a major reason these forums exist. Go to the Apple official forums if all you want to read is the censored company line.

2) Discussing pros and cons is what adults do. We can buy the most expensive item in the world, and still find things missing. We don't have to "love it or leave it". We can "love it and want better". That's how things change.

3) Do you think that Apple appreciates it when people push others not to buy their product if it doesn't meet ALL their needs? No product can stand up to that criterion.

I'll be the first to call BS

I've jailbroken my iPod Touch 2nd generation to enable wallpapers and the performance is decidedly hindered. It's due to the way that they render the background. Each icon has a shadow and the wallpaper itself has shadows applied to it for a more appealing look.

I understand the backgrounds are done differently in 4.0 compared to a JB device. What I don't understand is why the 3G and the original iPhone were not discontinued at the same time since they have the same specs. There is a perfectly good reason for the 3G to not have background wallpaper. I wouldn't want a slow phone either, but there is no reason for the original iPhone to not be in the same boat. They should have released 4.0 for all iPhones, and when they want to discontinue a device, they might as well discontinue ALL devices that have the same specifications. I upgraded so I am not complaining, I am just stating the obvious.

Yes you're right it is ok to discuss things. But come on, do you seriously think that Steve Jobs sat down one day and said:

"Bahahahaha, lets not include wallpapers on the 3G, THAT will get users to upgrade!!"

Seriously? Its a stupid wallpaper, how the heck is this such a huge deal to some people?? As I said 50,000 times, you purchased a 3G knowing that wallpapers were NOT part of the OS. Why are you entitled to it now? Your phone is JUST as functional as it was before! Any feeling of needing to upgrade is the fault of your own brain!

Erm... 3G owners can jailbreak and enable wallpapers.....

Just sayin'

That has nothing to do with what I said. The guy said be lucky you got iOS 4 on the 3g just look at how many android users are stuck on 1.6 because their carrier refused to upgrade. My point was this is a dumb argument due to the fact that you can root android and upgrade yourself, one can do things for themself. Where as you can't with the iphone, the first iphone and 3g have the same hardware but the first iphone didn't get iOS 4.

I should have made it clearer that my venom was directed at the rampant pre-adolescent floor pounding, not reasonable, cool-headed suggestions or critiques.

2 things:

  1. The wallpaper implementation by jailbreaking is different than that of iOS 4
  2. How important is a frickin wallpaper to you anyway?

• I know, it stinks. All I care about is enabling the built-in wallpaper. I hate jailbreaking, actually.

• Pretty important... :p

I have confidence in Apple making such judgments.

I am NOT of the mindset they let me decide for myself, because it potentially creates an inferior experience.

If that was what I was after, I would just go android where they will chuck anything at a piece of hardware and hope some of it works.

It's unbelievable how strict Apple's quality control department is! A phone that can't handle certain features should not have them. Speaking of which, Apple should really think of removing the lock screen on my 3G. It runs super slow, along with the home screen!

mine works

I'm not sure why but I have a custom background on my 3GS and it's not jailbroken. I had a wallpaper before and when I upgraded to the iOS4, that wallpaper became the background too. And all of my icons are there. I don't want to jinx it though. :)

Its supposed to work on the 3GS, just not the 3G and 2G.

My mnates 3G is laggy as WITHOUT the background.

So yes i'll go along with what Steve says.

And if any 3G owners say it isn't, go and compare it to a 3GS, or even better, a 3GS running iOS 4 with backgrounds to see how hopeless the 3G really is.

Your hardware is old. Suck it up.

Everyone does know that you can barely even see the wallpaper through the icons, right?
Shhh, don't let such tiny details spoil everyone's fun. ;) Apparently wallpaper is sooo important that several new members have joined just to post FUD in this thread.

I have a hard time believing that even Apple thinks someone who was planning on sticking with the 3G would then upgrade just to get custom wallpapers. So, I doubt that it why it's not there.
Exactly. iOS 4 has given my iPod touch (2G) the new folders feature... something that's actually useful. This notion that Apple/Jobs deliberately kept wallpapers from us to be mean is really laughable. If such was the case, then why wasn't "folders" also withheld?

Pfft.

For those who think Apple is better off disabling drop shadows on the iPhone 3G and enabling the wallpaper, the drop shadows are there for the same reason movie subtitles have drop shadows.

I'm not 100% sure if the texts are white, but whatever color it is, try using a plain background that matches the text's font color perfectly, disable those drop shadows and see if you can still read the texts that sit below the icons.

Fail

For anyone who has jailbroken their phone (4.0) for JUST wallpapers (I turned off multi-tasking) he's 100% right.

Go ahead and try it. Your phone is much, much slower with a wallpaper enabled.
I've done just that and no, it's not "much much slower" at all. It works just fine. How much is Apple paying you to help them upsell 3G owners?

No wonder Jobs doesn't want Flash on his iDevices, they're all too freaking SLOW. ;)

My Nexus One with Froyo 2.2 feels about 20x faster than my 2G Touch and it has a background and also things like Flash -- whoooooo.

Anyways, this is really DUMB. If drop-shadows are the problem, turn them off and come with an aesthetically pleasing alternative to providing a contrast. If their hardware can't handle 8-bit alphas, then they should use 1-bit instead. I could come up with something I like, because I'd rather have a background instead of just black on my 2G.

Anyways, Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb.

There. Problem solved. I have background apps too

Hey guy above, are you just mad for getting the 3GS (When you should have waited for 4)? Everything works fine for me on my 3G. Pandora is backgrounded, I have a home screen wallpaper, and I barely notice much of a difference besides the additional app loading slightly longer then usual

I've had mine since launch mate. And sorry but rubbish, it's slow and laggy as. Jailbroken or not, the former crashes frequently.

As for the i4, not getting it, two year upgrade cycle, I don't need the latest and greatest kit.
3GS app switching is far quicker than the jailbroken 3G

While I was upgrading to iOS4 i knocked the cable out of my iPhone 3G. I swear I saw standard homescreen with only the Apple Apps, and the raindrops background for a split second.

When the restore finalized I got the same BS black as everybody.

I saw the same thing as well and I was really surprised I couldn't find the homescreen background thing in the settings.

Oh well, the black backdrop works fine as well.

The people yelling that it was disabled to force ppl to get new phones must have not noticed that Apple isnt having a hard time moving their new stock  Look at the MR homepage and all you see is "cant order more.." "..no walk in sales.." ".. crazy guy lining up a week before launch.." :p
