The people yelling that it was disabled to force ppl to get new phones must have not noticed that Apple isnt having a hard time moving their new stock  Look at the MR homepage and all you see is "cant order more.." "..no walk in sales.." ".. crazy guy lining up a week before launch.." :p

Everyone wants their iPhone wallpaper!

Need to have the latest/greatest!

As I said in my post above I REFUSE to upgrade my 2gen iPod touch. I have a question for y'all though:

If I don't upgrade, will my Apps start to not work over time?

That was my experience with going from 2.0 --> 3.0. I had to reupgrade all my apps....

Most likely, yes.
But then, they don't make applications for Win XP anymore, either. And many had to buy new hardware to work with Vista and Win 7 software.

It's called progress. With technology, it's particularly quick and brutal and unforgiving.

But we won't stop people from using VCRs with their CRTs, even though new movies don't get released to VHS anymore...

I have to say, after updated my 3G to iOS4 last night, I'm VERY happy as its much much quicker. Previously I was running 3.1.3 jailbroken with backgrounds and multitasking and I thought it was fine, but now with iOS4 I can see how much of a dog it was.

Very happy so far!

No wonder Jobs doesn't want Flash on his iDevices, they're all too freaking SLOW. ;)

My Nexus One with Froyo . . .

Is that Nexus anywhere near as ugly as your avatar?

[not sure i can value the opinion of anyone with "taste" like that.]

What about rotation lock?

I am really only disappointed in not being able to lock the roatation as I think landscape on the iphone screen is awful personally. I understand completely all the other features that are disabled on the 3g but not that one. Any ideas? I preorded but didnt get mine ordered fast enough and showing the July 14th date....hoping they come sooner but who knows, its just a phone anyway. Is there something Im not aware of with rotation lock that is hardware intensive?

So you seriously think a large number of people will feel they have to upgrade their 3G solely because they want WALLPAPER? And there was me thinking the average age of an iPhone user was older than 12!

Maybe they feel they have less excuse to upgrade if they can't hand theirs down to a 12y/o who isn't going to want it if he can't have shirtless pop star as his wallpaper.

That my friend, is Tetra from the Zelda video game series. Not sure I can value your opinion.

And I'm holding off the iOS4 upgrade on my 3G, just seems like too much of a risk (it's already running slow enough).

I'd say I'm glad that Apple cares about performance this much...

But jeeeezz... If they cared that much about performance, wouldn't they just optimize it? No, because that's one less reason to buy a newer iDevice.

iOS 4 custom wallpaper's a bit laggy on my (jailbroken) iPod touch 2g, but I think Apple should have at least given the option. It's totally usable. (multitasking works fine, too. It doesn't use any RAM.)

"Deemed Useless by Apple?" Is there someone at Apple holding a gun to your head and making you update your OS to 4.0? No! Most companies don't even offer upgradable OS's and for free no less. I can't believe the ignorance on this thread.

Try docking your 1st gen ipod touch with itunes and welcome an annoying barrage of update available stuff. After almost 3 years of it I'm ready to take a gunshot to my head.

Ignorance? Come on man, you know damn well this is the start of the phasing out of supported ipod touches and apple iphones. This is where they start, the little stuff like wallpaper, ease it in slowly, after a while simple peons like yourself are coerced gently into the ******** of "your device is no longer supported" (-Master Jobs) after a long ass wait for a long awaited and cool update.

And the fact that this post is about a 1st Generation iPod Touch is even more laughable.

Yea, how could I expect a device under 3 years old (about 2.6 years) to be supported vi software updates? how foolish... I thought this wasn't Microsoft. Oh wait, Microsoft does support stuff for 3 years, like defective xbox's. Cool apple.

Listen, I see where you are going, and I think we are both being polar extremes of opposing views. I can agree with you that my device isn't new and I shouldn't expect everything as far as compatibility with future updates, but I am definitely sad that this wasn't mentioned during all these months of waiting that my device wasn't going to be fully supported. I think that's kind of low on Apples part.

I think it might be true as Steve's mentioned. In my opinion, if Steve want to increase their sale on iPhone 4. Why he just only disable such this rubbish feature in iPhone3G/iTouch. BTW, I believe that although customers still use their iPhone3G at this time, they will absolutely buy iPhone 4 in the future :)

Why so serious?

Have to say I find this to be a kick in the teeth. By making such a comment, Jobs is implying that they actually tested iOS 4 on the iPhone 3G - something I find very hard to believe. Other than restarting every 5 minutes and not even playing music properly or making phone calls, my iPhone 3G is now claiming that it has run out of battery - despite being charged.

Wonderful.

For anyone who has jailbroken their phone (4.0) for JUST wallpapers (I turned off multi-tasking) he's 100% right.

Go ahead and try it. Your phone is much, much slower with a wallpaper enabled.

Everyone bitches about how "slow their 3g is" yet they want something that will make it slower.

Of course, they could have found a way to make it more efficient if they really wanted to...
Truth.

Well there goes any value your opinion might have had as well, as you've obviously no idea of one of the greatest video game franchises in the industry

MacRumors really needs to invest in some people who know how to write. Some of these posts are so horribly written. After all, the first sentence in this story is a fragment.

Remember the four S's to good writing:

Short words
Short sentences
Short paragraphs
Short stories

That's all.

Good point. Wrong place :)

We all know apple issues slightly different version for the 3G and the 3GS. If the drop shadowed and gradient style overlay, is what causes custom wallpaper to be slow on 3g then I do not understand why didn't apple opt simply to remove those and allow users custom wallpaper.

Hey presto, 3G with some compromises, but at least looking a lot closer to the 3GS iteration. I don't get what would be so difficult for that to have happened. You notice the lack of a drop shadow a lot less than the glaring omission of no wallpapers.

Everyone here is entitled to their opinion - of course. I hear several points being presented and I resonate w/ all of them (except for the dbags out there)

I think there are some things we have to remember here -

1. Apple is and always will be a company - that's a good thing!
Yes, it's obvious that Apple cares about their customers more than other companies in related fields/markets. However, none of this would exist w/o making money. They HAVE to make money, right? I think we are lucky enough to own products from a company that inherently realizes the value of customer service. Until an Apple product cures cancer, it's always going to be about making money.

My point being that if they came out tomorrow and said "Yes, the 3G won't have this and that feature because we want people to buy the iPhone 4", they wouldn't be evil. Of course they won't say that because it's not smart business.

2. Old technology stops getting updates at somepoint
Whether fair or not, it's true. Someone mentioned it being relatively unheard of for a cell phone to get this kind of update 2 years after the fact - I tend to agree with that. The iPhone 3G is still a pretty sweet piece of technology, but it's aging. Maybe thank Apple for building a phone that still has usefulness/relevance after 2+ years on the market

3. Would it be possible for Apple to effectively implement Wallpapers and Multitasking?
Everyone screaming "YES!!" - I don't think many people would disagree with you (people tend to argue with those who complain rather than express) - it IS possible (even currently through JB). However, they would have to write code for several different phones and someone, somewhere, decided that's not the best use of Apple employee's time. Businesses make mistakes. Is this one of them? Maybe. But we have to live with it, good or bad. Rest assured, they actually hear you guys :)

Hear me on this. I'm disappointed esp since I've had a 2G and a 3G that both have background and multitasking abilities. The technology is there for it - there is no doubt of that. However, Apple is certainly pushing there OS's further along and I don't fault them for not including it. Certainly wish it was there. All you guys complaining and commenting on that, I hear your point. However, I'm not sure if we can resonably take the approach that Apple owes it to us

4. Apple isn't curing cancer
It's a phone. It's a kickass phone. But it's still just a phone, right? I realize this point is oversimplified and certainly isn't entirely applicable - but maybe it gives some perspective?

5. This happens all the time.
Apple releases product. People get pissed. Repeat.

I'm not trying to bash anyone here, I'm really not and I sure hope it doesn't come across that way. The internet makes people angry and I'm trying to avoid that for myself, personally. I just think that we all have different opinions on Apple, but there are some hard facts about the company.

I welcome feedback on these - just don't be an ass please.

ps - for you guys that actually have broken phones due to the 3g upgrade. First, sorry for that - it must suck. I'm not here to argue about things that legitimately rendered your phone useless. Again, we all adopted 4.0 early, and there are generally a lot of risks associated w/ that.

I'm really pissed that Ford hasn't installed power windows in my 1963 Galaxie yet.

I like how everyone here with two year old hardware feels completely entitled to the new features. There's a reason that almost every carrier out there lets you upgrade every two years. The fact that there are still 3G's in the wild and they're not 99% broken is proof that Apple is the best cell phone manufacturer in the world.

The inclusion of custom home screen wallpapers has been questioned by a number of users, as it does not initially appear that the feature should require particularly advanced hardware. Gizmodo reports that one user emailed Apple CEO Steve Jobs to ask about the issue, and received a response noting that unsatisfactory performance of icon animations on top of the custom wallpapers was the reason for the omission.Custom wallpapers have obviously been supported on jailbroken iPhones and iPod touches for quite some time, so it is not obvious just how Apple's implementation differs, but it seems clear that Apple's implementation of custom wallpapers simply didn't reach the company's standards for performance during the development and testing process.

Without a doubt, BS. It's called planned marketing obsolescence.

Apple, EASILY, could release IOS 4 for the original iPhone with at least some of its features.

Apple is starting to become a parody of comedy bits about itself.

Everyone has to have a new "MAPPLE" product, yet everyone hates how the company treats them afterwards. (Simpsons episode)

You would think Steve Jobs, after a liver transplant, would grow up and start treating his customers who spent over $500 on an original iPhone better, but nope.

Jobs is still the same spoiled brat who treats his customers like $HlT and disowns his own child.

Some things never change. I used to hate Bill Gates with a passion, but you know what?

Him and Warren Buffet are starting to look like a world leaders, yet Jobs hasn't changed one bit. That's a shame. Apple has more value now than Microsoft and Steve Jobs has a new liver and doesn't have a freaking care in the world. F the customers.

Who cares? The lemmings will still buy more insanely great products and toss the old ones in the trash just to contribute to global pollution just because Steve Jobs tells them to, not because the device is outdated. Wonderful. Good way to save that billions of dollars in the bank Steve.

Thank you Apple.

[tosses original $500 iPhone in the landfill with everyone else]

haha. Touché.

If ever there was the stupidest Apple fanboy comment ever this is it...

Just to try it, I jailbroke my 3G with iOS 4, and honestly having a background on my screen is negligible in terms of a performance hit. I have multitasking enabled as well, and the ONLY times I see any kind of noticeable lag are when I'm doing certain things in Cydia and once in awhile when the "standard protection" screen pops up to ask for my password (very nice new feature to have instead of just a 4 digit code.)

I already have my pre-order in for the iPhone 4, so I won't even be using this one much longer (have to wait till July 2), but it's nice to try out ahead of time :)
