I can just see the reaction now when I walk into Macy's to return something I ordered online and when they ask me if I have my receipt I say yes, and whip out my iPad!

? I show receipts on my iPhone all the time....
Moviepasses, coupons, confirmation emails... I guess you are a bit behind the times.

It was never gone...you are digging too much...we have one developer who made this all up...It works in the gold master....no way apple is gonna cripple it this late in the game.

Except it doesn't work for me when it worked just before installing the beta. Explain that one. Nothing changed outside of the install.

"Don't believe everything you read." How ironic of an answer was that!!! It you went by that answer, then you shouldn't believe Jobs' answer either :)

Don't believe everything you read is not the same thing as don't believe anything you read.

You believe everything you read, that's the problem today. Every stupid comment that someone can do anywhere is taken as a truth and pages and even papers and tv news publish it without contrast it. It's amazing how the news have been more and more degraded.

I told you people, it works in the final versions of iOS 4.2 and 10.6.5 ( I tried today and worked beautifully ) so seems that somebody just wanted to create polemics around this.

Please, after talk, contrast the information, try yourself and never believe what others says.

Hugs

Except that it doesn't for me. It worked with an earlier build of 10.6.5 that I installed and then stopped working when I installed the latest version.

"A: AirPrint has not been pulled. Don't believe everything you read."

Okay, so I shouldn't believe what I read from you as well, Steve? :)

Jokes aside, he could still mean that Airprint hasn't been pulled from iOS 4.2, but the computer software that allows it to print to shared printers might not make it out at the same time.

So maybe Airprint will print directly to compatible printers, but not via computers.

But don't believe everything you read. :)

Sorry for you, it have been working with every single beta version for me, including the H74 and iOS 4.2 GM. May you haven't install it well, I don't know, but it works

I could believe the install part considering you can see the printers. The best thing for all of us is to wait and see. But no one has done anything.

Tweet from Daniel Eran Dilger:

"Lowdown: Apple's AirPrint for shared printers feature in iOS is getting pulled due to a patent troll."

So I guess you'll only be able to use printers that support AirPrint like HP's ePrint.

I secretly hope one can never print easily from an iPad. I have 140 laser printers, and the yearly costs on them is more than most school's tech budgets, and I want it to go away. Forever. This shouldn't be the domain of the iPad. Go green, go cloud. There is rarely a real reason to print anything, at least in EDU. We are totally electronic NOW....

If you regard the iPad as more than a toy, and to be used at work, Customers will almost always want paperwork with their orders when you send them goods.

Telling them you will send them the item and email the paperwork just won't cut it.

The modern world seems to need paper more than ever, which I agree is stupid and crazy, but that's the way things work.

no digging, it's plainly on the top in the release notes. i have been printing from ios via shared printer so i know it works now.. but it seems that it may have been planned to go away for a second. you don't pull release notes references to a capability for no reason--it was not made up.

however, we'll see what actually ends up happening, i bet they'll now change their minds. i'm glad there was such a cry over this.

Just as an aside, I am happily printing to my wireless Canon MG6150 using Canon's own app - trouble is it is limited to photos!

I am happily printing (well, if needed) from my iPhone to my Canon MP640 as well with the Canon app. Making a screenshot (simultaneous press the home button en the switch off button) allows you to print non-photos as well.

Steve could give a rat's ass whether hp is pissed. HP competes with Apple in numerous markets, including smart phones, btw. hp already sells the printers, so no worry that hp wouldn't follow through. And you can bet that canon, brother, and everyone else will adopt AirPrint functionality, too, so apple doesn't actually need HP.

they will eventually yes, but this smells very much like a promise of exclusivity for the rollout that got diluted--i still think this may be the case. in general steve could give a rat's ass, but there are also breach of contract issues that can be avoided by creating exclusivity bubbles...

ahh, who knows. why else would this happen? i mean really? it's not an 'oversight', it's real, it's plainly in the release notes, so.. there is a reason. but i bet they go back on it anyway. too much outcry.

Going back to look at the original iOS 4.2 announcement but I don't recall anyone ever saying specifically that wireless printing was supported through a shared printer in OSX or Windows on a Mac or PC. I always took it to mean wireless printing through either an Airport connected shared printer or a Wifi printer supporting Airprint.

Does anyone have a link that actually stated that this feature was OSX or Windows shared printer specific?

Link or not, devs said it was working with previous betas (OS X 10.6.5 beta, iTunes 10.1 beta and iOS 4.2 beta)

Makes me wonder why it wouldn't print to my MP640.

Working fine for me

I have the 10.6.5 beta, iTunes beta, and 4.2GM on my iPad & iPhone and printed from iPad just fine via shared HP OfficeJet 7410 printer on my network. Colors, text, layout...everything just fine. Since beta 3 of 4.2, AirPrint has been working great, I don't see any reason to pull it.

In the worst case scenario, if AirPrint is only available with a supported printer, I have every confidence that it will take about, oh, 10 minutes for the open source community to release a piece of software that emulates one and passes the resulting print job to the system's default printer.

this is the question that Jobs wanted to answer. If it had been more precise another of the (imagined) hundreds of e-mails wold have been chosen.

I think not only do people believe everything they read, they take what is written to the extreme. With this, from what I understand, Apple only pulled support for printers connected to Macs & PCs. The HP printers should still work. Yet everyone seems to thing no printing whatsoever.

Also, with the thing Steve said about not believing everything you read. I know the person I quoted was joking, but as he said, that doesn't mean everything is a lie/wrong. It just means that while somethings are wrong, there could be somethings that are correct.

As I said in another thread, many things (if not all things) are not totally black nor white, but some shade of gray. Unfortunately, people seem to only understand black & white.

Yikes - another vague retort from the reclusive billionaire.

I really don't understand why the Apple board doesn't yank Steve's email account.

You're over-analyzing it wrong

Good one.

I love how the phrase "You're 'X'ing it wrong." has become part of popular culture, even though the overlord didn't use exactly those words.

Absolutely. I wonder why this even made the front page, seeing as how it's obvious that there was no substance to the email, and therefore no substance to Jobs' reply.

Not exactly a new phenomenom.
