One Solution

If you want to print something just take your computer over to your printer, plug it in, and print.

I do this whenever I need to print something on paper, which isn't very much anymore.

It is 99% reliable too.

Golly, this is worse than chicken knickers.....

Wow. You people are amazing. We still don't have any proof other than someone allegedly hearing something from a lowly tech support person. Give me a break. Now we have a denial from Steve Jobs and you still assume that part of the rumour is true after numerous devs said that it worked fine with shared printers.
I'm sure the Verizon iPhone is coming out any day too.

Just because Apple pulled mention of Airprint via OX S in the IOS dev center doesn't mean it's not coming.
1) If OS X Airprint had been cancelled apple would send a beta of 10.6.5 WITHOUT it.
2) Apple removed mention because it's a prerelease feature in a unreleased update. From Apple's POV as far as IOS devs and the public are concerned there's no such thing as 10.6.5 until it drops.
3) Apple would make a small under that radar big stink if this feature missed
shipping. We would hear from more than just IOS devs and MacStories.

Holy ****, alert the press!

I really don't understand why the Apple board doesn't yank Steve's email account.

Because Steve's little replies bring tons of free press. A few words from him gets more ink than formal new product announcements from any of Apple's competitors. And anyone who gets annoyed by him are people who were disinclined to be customers in the first place.

You realize it's just past noon out in Cupertino, right?

It's there now:

Code:
The 10.6.5 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Snow Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac, including fixes that:
improve reliability with Microsoft Exchange servers
address performance of some image-processing operations in iPhoto and Aperture
address stability and performance of graphics applications and games
resolve a delay between print jobs
address a printing issue for some HP printers connected to an AirPort Extreme
resolve an issue when dragging contacts from Address Book to iCal
address an issue where dragging an item from a stack causes the Dock to not automatically hide
resolve an issue with Wikipedia information not displaying correctly in Dictionary
improve performance of MainStage on certain Mac systems
resolve spacing issues with OpenType fonts
improve reliability with some Bluetooth braille displays
resolve a VoiceOver issue when browsing some web sites with Safari 5

Well, they did release a seed that made it stop working for some users... does that count?

I think its always very convenient when Steve answers just the right question in an email out of the millions he probably receives on a daily basis.

In my opinion, they are fabricated or a well thought out PR program within apple, where by emails are chosen according to the hot issue of the day, whatever is really pissing people off at the moment.

I was having some major issues trying to get a book publisher I was working for into the iBookstore. I complained directly to Steve pretty loudly in an e-mail. The same day, the head of the program called me on the phone to address my issues. I have to believe Steve had something to do with that, even if I didn't get a reply.

Um, you can't do that with a iPad or iPhone which is what Airprint is used for.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Wow, the sender jumps to some massive conclusions, vaporware indeed.

I have pity for Apple sometimes when they have to put up with all the over reactions to what are essentially rumours. People just don't have the patience to just wait and see.

I also envy those people who don't religiously follow the rumour sites, they don't know disappointment, they just see what is on the shelf once released.

Us rumour mongers need to take a chill pill.
Don't pity Apple. They do all this on purpose. Most big companies release a roadmap so people and businesses (especially businesses) can plan ahead. Apple, on the other hand, gets tons of free publicity before launch, and then Jobs gets to make a big presentation at launch. A side bonus is that some people feel sorry for them, rather than get annoyed at the lack of info.

i can see it playing out like this...

1) 4.2 gets released without shared printer AirPrint support.
2) 4.2 gets jailbroken
3) 4.2.1 gets released a week later with shared printer AirPrint support.

Do you want your jailbreak or your full AirPrint capabilities. lol

But then again, I could be WAY off :D

That.........would be incredibly devious.

I doubt they'd do it, but then again it wouldn't shock me if they did.

Sorry to burst the conspiracy bubble, there's no issue at all with AirPrint to anything in 4.2GM - the bit that may have been removed is in 10.6.5, not in iOS: all iOS sees is a shared printer via Bonjour. 4.2GM prints to shared printers shared by iTunes Beta 10.1 on Windows and earlier releases of 10.6.5

Be Patient

I am amazed at how people here love to hang on to negative rumors, or maybe they are the only ones noting?
There was close to no proof that airprint as described by Steve Jobs at the conference and is STILL described on the Apple web site was being crippled to not allow for shared printers.
Yet when Steve says no worries people pick apart the question, pick apart the answer and cling to the sky is falling down.

If Airprint was being limited to HP e-printers, wouldn't the first place Apple change the description be the public description on their web site?

Be patient. Common sense tells us these rumors are just that, people having fun frothing at the mouth, but we will all find out soon enough.

The last 10.6.5 seed removed airprint functionality for shared printers. That is considered proof.

HP may own the patent for printing to shared printers from a mobile device...

http://www.freepatentsonline.com/7636584.html

I think not.

Claim 1: I do not believe the Apple system involves "accepting and installing at the mobile-computing device a latest version of a common printer driver." The print driver lives on the host.

Independent claims 13 and 18 have a similar limitation. Some other claim limitations also look unlikely.
