Not that unexpected. Physically, he's looked quite frail for the past few years, especially most recently at the WWDC 2011 conference. I'm sure Apple will be fine, they've got a ton of innovative people in the company. Jobs sure did a great job revitalizing the company over the last 10 years or so though. I wish him well.

Looks like I'll be buying a crap-ton of AAPL stock tomorrow.

Seriously, Apple will be fine...They've been expecting this for some time, and the product pipeline is in place for the next 5 years. And Steve isn't going anywhere if we know him at all...

I agree with this. Apple really is set for quite some time, and Tim Cook knows how to handle Apple.

I hate to see Steve leave as CEO but I suspect he is still going to be a "game changer" for awhile.

Steve is a Buddhist right? I hope he finds peace, and perhaps improve his health.

First Jack Layton of the NDP dies in Canada from cancer, now Steve is being hit hard. This is a sad day for the world. Steve has changed the course of history and improved all our lives in countless ways. I wish him the best! :apple:

Is this real life

i know, it's pretty out of the blue.

But he's been sick for a while and his condition has probably taken a turn for the worse. I suppose the right thing to do is to pass the position on. You can only have a titular CEO for so long.

He'll still be involved with Apple - it's only natural to look to him for his talent and wisdom - but I fear this news means that he has a longer and tougher battle ahead of him, health-wise.

Thank you so much Steve. Your contributions to technology will not be forgotten. On the list of people I would want to meet, you will always be near the top of my list.

What a career...

I'm glad he is trying to stay on as chairman... That's a nod to the future, and makes me less concerned about health issues.

On another note, let's have that mid size tower, apple!

We all knew this day was coming soon...just didn't think it would be THIS soon. First question is, how is Steve's health? Hopefully it hasn't taken a turn for the worse.

Second question is what will this do to Apple's image and value (specifically how will the stock market react to this)? Guess we will find out soon enough...

I hope Tim Cook is really up to the challenge.

Best wishes to Steve and his family.

Wow. Even though I knew it would come one day, I'm shocked.

Wish him the very best.

EDIT

I was initially skeptical of this story, as early reports gave no source for the letter.

Now it is clear that the story is direct from Apple.

Best of luck Steve. You will always be one of the glorious, persnickety, irascible titans of the IT world. You found an IT world that did not match your vision, and you changed the IT world to match you.

Your products and services are proudly used by hundreds of millions of people. We all have our own little packages of highly crafted world-leading industrial design and advanced technology.

Thanks to you.

Steve no more.

Cook is fine at CEO. Forstall can run iOS. Ive can handle design. Mansfield can handle Macs. Schiller will be the "face" of the company now. I think we will be ok. Hate to lose Steve though

Conveniently in between the last quarterly financial call and the unveiling of the iPhone 5. Don't think for a second this hasn't been planned to the minute.

Thanks for everything, Steve.

Holy cow macrumors is fast. I just saw this on cnn like 5 minutes ago. my jaw dropped. I hope Steve's health is not declining again. if it was i dont think he would let us know. such a shame

Though I knew the day would come soon, I was still shocked it came today.

I didn't expect it today at all and not this way.

Hope you're doing well Steve!
