MADEA would also say: HELLUR!

So, given the past absences from Steve, it seems his health may be taking a turn for the worse; I certainly hope not.

A great man and I wish him well. Steve Jobs taught the world how a tech company should run and what a well organized visionary company is capable of.

What a shame this day has actually come.
But from what it says, he'll still be at Apple in a way.
All the best Steve.

My gosh people have a little respect. All of you who are just complaining about your stock. Have a little respect! Steve is obviously not doing well, and you should be at least somewhat empathetic.

All these people talking about dumping stocks, and about major drops...

If it does drop (it probably will somewhat) you know it'll come back up... This would be the time to buy. I wish I could, but no $$$ to put into it.

This is so sad. He made apple into a company I disliked to one that I get excited about their products. :( Without him, I hope we don't lose this...

"I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come."

It sounds bad.

I wish you well Steve. I hope you'll be back soon.

Letter of resignation http://www.technobuffalo.com/companies/apple/steve-jobs-letter-of-resignation/

CUPERTINO, Calif.–August 24, 2011–

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know.

Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

It's sad but what's even more sad is the very real truth about losing Steve Jobs in this world.

Well yes, he hasn't resigned from Apple, just exchanged one position for another. He mentioned his "new role", which is a "new role" at Apple. Though this might have just been something to ease investor worry.

It is *possible* that being a titular CEO for so long was wearing pretty thin with a lot of people, so he resigned and took a more suitable official title.

However it might also mean (and I fear more likely) that his health battle is proving tougher these days.

All the best, Steve...If we're lucky enough to see another company with even an ounce of Apple's creativity and quality, it will be because of you.

Since he used "unfortunately" in the letter, it sounds like his health is getting worse. :(

Interestingly, Apple announced it after even the after-hours trading had stopped for the day. He does plan to stay on as Chairman. Conspicuously, it reveals that they did have a succession plan, after all (Tim Cook). The company will be in good hands for some time. Hopefully he is able to leave the company some good designs in however much time he has left with the company. A separate chairman and CEO is good corporate governance, anyway, and it allows the CEO to focus on the daily operations while the chairman deals with strategic issues (effectively what's been going on since Jobs took his leave of absence in the first place).

Steve is not Chair of the Board. Tim is not CEO. Note that Steve says 'if the board sees fit' and 'recommends'.

While the above is likely to happen. It will not happen until the board decides. Thus you should not report this as fact.

In all fairness, and for all his great ideas, Apple needs a new lease of life. Is perceived cult status will be the death of Apple (in 10-15 years) and the gradual, slow change needs to happen.

timing is everything- why on a Wed?

Why wouldn't Steve/Apple announce this on Friday? Or on Fri before labor day weekend? Or on Sept 11? Weekends/etc would suck some air out of the story and limit stock fluctuations. This is what ALL businesses do.

Is there more acuity to this story? In other words is there something bad and imminent that forced Apple to announce this at an odd time- something that wouldn't allow them to wait for just 2 more weeks?

Everyone knew this day was coming.
Tim Cook has proven himself a competent leader at Apple.
Apple stock may take a short term beating.

Maybe you shouldn't be so quick to judge. As one of those who was complaining about my stock, I have plenty of empathy for Steve and his health situation. Simply because one does not refer to Steve's health in a post on a message board does not equate to somehow lacking empathy for Steve's health.
