You pretty much hit it on the head.

It's pretty unambiguous that that's exactly what's happened. :(
Yeah extremely sad but the tone of the message says much.
This along with the early biography release(despite the author disagreeing with this) are really worrying.

I hope Steve gets well. I bet it was painful for him to write that letter.

Painful is hitting your funny bone. It is pretty clear from the message that this goes far beyond painful.

Apple board member Art Levinson, chairman of Genentech, issued the following statement on behalf of the Apple board:
"Steve's extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world's most innovative and valuable technology company. Steve has made countless contributions to Apple's success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple's immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration."

Nooooo! The whole day has been just terrible for me and now this! :(:(:(

I can just say Mr. Jobs, thank you for making Apple for what it is today. I will miss you. :apple:

Come on who did not see this coming.

The only surpise is he did not leave on his death bed but I willing to bed the "medical leave" part was crap. He was stepping down then and now it has given enough time that he can really leave.

I see it as a good thing for the company.

I would like to see Apple offer Steve Jobs a 10 million share departure bonus. He certainly deserves it. Apple has almost a billion shares outstanding, so 10m would be a pittance. Besides, which would you rather receive, 10m Apple shares, or today's equivalent in U.S. Dollars? Hmmm, appreciating asset or depreciating asset?

Steve is not Chair of the Board. Tim is not CEO. Note that Steve says 'if the board sees fit' and 'recommends'.

While the above is likely to happen. It will not happen until the board decides. Thus you should not report this as fact.

The board would not have released this email if the decision wasn't already made. I just heard confirmation of this decision on the Nightly Business Report.

I wish the best for Apple, but most importantly I wish the best for Steve. There is no doubt that Steve made this decision due to his health, but I hope he can make a full recovery and keep an active role in Apple.

Tim Cook can do it. Apple is in a great position and has a great future ahead.

Definitely. He's been in this role unofficially for a while. Best of health to Steve.

Folks with the negative remarks, keep them to yourselves. You are on an Apple forum with long time members…*

Thanks Steve!

Wow! What an an amazing contribution you have made to so many people, many, many thanks for leading the tech industry in such a visionary way.

From a true Apple Fanboy since 1987!

Sad to see him go. I hope he isn't seriously ill and is able to live well for years after Apple. I'm sure Apple will do just fine, Cook is capable as a CEO, and Jobs is still going to be with the company, plus there have been more innovators than just him.
