Why is it that when someone famous announces that their health isn't really that bad, they die within a year? Kinda like when Freddie Mercury said he wasn't sick....

Condolences to Steve and his family, and to anyone else who smokes. Sometimes it sucks to be right.

Too early for condolences to Apple upon its demise. Perhaps this will reverse the short-run profitable but ultimately suicidal "Mattel" trend there and get Apple back to making cutting edge workstation COMPUTERS and let other companies make easily copied iToys. The iPod was a fluke and should have remained so; not a long range marketing strategy.

Hopefully.

this is my first, and probably only, post i'll make here as i normally lurk.

but, i just think the comments here are disgusting.

people are talking about stock prices, shares, being able to purchase computers, or getting firewire, when another person, one you presumably admire even, could be gravely ill.

that is truly reprehensible and borderline vile.

none of that stuff is as important as a life.

"...Tim Cook to be responsible for Apple’s day to day operations..."

correction APPLE'S

apostrophe please.

Great Decision

As apple fans we all hold Steve Jobs on a high pedistal, but the fact remains that every time there was even a small mention of Steves health last year Apples stocks were disrupted. This is a very SMART move on Steve and Apples part to prove to the investment community that Apple can still survive without Steve at the helm.

Make no mistake this a deliberate move on Steve and Apples part.

Wishing Steve and Apple all the best.

Amazing how so many of you think a huge company like Apple is all about one person. And I agree some of the comments on this forum are downright sickening, the most important thing is a person who is obviously quite unwell. But anyways, hope he gets better soon.

Despite being a CEO of one of the biggest companies in the world, and a spearhead figure of the technology world - he's still a person, with a family, friends, and health problems.

He is entitled to 'lie' or keep things like this close to his chest, it's his right as a human being.

Whilst I want what's best for Apple and all that jazz - he's a regular guy, just like you and me, at the end of it all. His life is just as precious.

Apple will be around long after Steve Jobs - mainly thanks to him.

During this time of absence, carry on to appreciate and enjoy Apple and wish Steve nothing but the best - it's not his fault if your stock goes down, and wishing his 'demise' so you can gain FireWire back in your MacBooks is also not appropriate.

I wish Steve all the best in his health, and a full and safe recovery. Failing that, I hope he gets the privacy and care he deserves during this difficult chapter of his life.

Thank you for pointing this out. Some people are simply heartless.

No one is passionate about Windows. Most people can't even remember the name of the guy that started AOL.

Steve Case. Right off the top of my head. We're not all one dimensional. And if people don't like reading about stock speculation, don't read it. I don't know Jobs, none of this makes much difference to me and we're certainly not on a first name basis. Whatever. If I held 5000 shares of AAPL and just lost a ton of money because no one in Cupertino is capable of telling the whole story, ever, about anything, I'd be pretty pissed off.

So, those of us who were worried about the decline of his health and his gaunt appearance over the past year were right to be worried and concerned. Yet I still see people in this thread trying to shut down any conversation about Steve's health.

I wish him well and hope he recovers fully so he can return to the helm at Apple.

I was really sad to hear this news getting home from work today.

Some comments made in this thread make me want to close my account and never visit the MacRumors forums again.

But I won't in part because some of you have a heart and soul and wished him well. Thank you for helping me believe we haven't all lost it.

Get well Steve.

My prayers go out to Steve and his family.

Hopefully he is flipping the bird to the Grim Reaper.

Little old planet Earth keeps spinning but somehow the future is suddenly changed - less certain...

A guiding light has gone away - and I don't know who's gonna replace it...

Get well soon Steve...I'd take your family and go do that caretakers job on the desert Island in Australia if I were you...

One way or another you've been insanely great!

:)

lol what about concern for mr. Jobs instead of shares?

Well let's separate the private and the public issues. On the private side, obviously Steve Jobs is facing a very serious health issue. Personally I hope he gets the care and treatment he needs to make a full recovery.

On the Apple front, I don't believe we'll see him return to running the company on a day-to-day basis even if he makes a full recovery. He's put heart and soul into the company for the last 10 years and I don't see him going back to that grind after this, whatever the outcome.

On the other hand, that won't be all bad. Steve's vision has given us exciting technical and consumer products, and raised Apple from the late '90s morass it had fallen into. But in the past few years some of his decisions have alienated long-time Apple customers with his priority on consumer electronics, even in the computer line, and on limiting choices and user options. New visions, once again focused on producing the very best products Apple can create, would be most welcome.

I don't post a great deal here either but I thought I'd just come on this one occasion and say... well said.

This thread has revealed just how many kids there are posting on this forum. People talking about how they think he's gonna die, stuff like that. Have you guys got no sense of politeness? Ever heard of respect?

Some serious growing up to do for some of you.

You might laugh but I don't think it's beyond the bounds of possibility that Steve might actually take the odd look round here once in a while - it's not like MacRumors is some small unknown forum after all. Given the remotest possibility that he' might be reading this, it's seriously out of order to be coming out with stuff that's gonna make him feel even more like crap.

Saying "it comes with the territory of his position" is just avoiding the responsibility of showing some manners.

Steve - if you are reading - take all the time off you need, and make a full recovery. Thanks for all you've done these last few years.

Once again - winny20 - well said.

There is always hope!!!

If Apple tanks (which is highly unlikely) because of SJ leaving, then everything we love about apple is false. Don't get me wrong, STEVE IS THE MAN, but the company will survive and we should still send our best wishes because he's done so much for the company.

Bzzzzt. Wrong answer. It's called fraud, especially if the board knew it and allowed him to make false statements regarding hte true seriousness of his health. Sounds a lot like the "fannie mae is just fine" that was going on last summer..... If you want privacy, don't be the CEO of a major corporation.

If you read any of the major news stories commenting on this announcement, every one of them talks about Apple's stock price. It's not just people here, and Steve Jobs knows fully well that that goes with the territory of being Apple's CEO, and a public person.

Keep in mind, there is NO WAY that a recurrence/metastasis would be found this week if it wasn't there before the pre-macworld announcement.

It's simple logic, and it's as plain as day to anyone not drinking the SJ coolaid.

Firstly he's a hard worker and likely to be in a lot of denial about his health. He may just have had a re-staging CT that showed metastatic disease, not previously demonstrated.

I'd say though the most likely explanation is a business one: get Macworld over with.

He'll have "leave" until the acting CEO can show every one is up to the "job" which will re-assure the markets before he announces his permanent retirement.

(Chances are though, if he has metastatic pancreatic cancer he'll be dead before June.)
