I was making a joke. Probability theory states that Steve's weight loss is in direct correlation to his cancer. Steve Wozniak's lack of weight loss is in direct correlation to his awesome lifestyle.

The point is, I realize what Steve Jobs is facing right now. And like you, thank heavens, he will overcome it. I just can't see him giving in to this when he has never given in in the computer industry.

Then report me. I will not be bullied by you. You made the comment, you did not indicate this was a joke, so get over it. If you can't handle someone standing up to your comments then you should reconsider posting or how you word your posting. It's as simple as that.

You know what, Don? I think a lot of people here do think Steve Jobs is some kind of immortal god. I think they are so far down a RDF black hole that they simply cannot imagine a world without Steve Jobs. I've seen posts in the past of people who've said they'd take bullets for Steve Jobs or suffer the effects of his cancer for him. Seriously.

And you could be right, also, regarding his health. What if he dies sooner rather than later? It'd be sad, but Apple as a corporation should have planned for this eventual date long ago.
 
OK, I agree that the whole weight loss aspect could be due to an unfortunate cancer recurrence, however I can posit a chain of events that actually makes sense to me AND includes the "hormone" aspect from the recent email.

1) He had pancreatic cancer.
2) Standard treatment would likely include removal of part or all of the pancreas, probable removal of the gall bladder, possible removal of some small bowel, and almost certainly radiation therapy.
3) Radiation therapy can cause scarring/strictures of the small bowel and abnormal motility, in addition to decreased absorption of food. If small bowel was removed at the original surgery or subsequent surgeries, it would cause decreased absorption of nutrients.
4) The pancreas secretes enzymes that aid in digestion AND absorption-related hormones such as insulin, glucagon. Also: bicarb for neutralizing the stomach acid. Many people who have bad or removed pancreases have to take oral enzymes with meals to break down food. Diabetics have to take insulin to improve uptake of glucose.
5) Loss of gallbladder can cause mild to significant absorption problems.

Add it all up: He might well be cancer-free but suffering from nutritional problems due to his surgery and radiation therapy. I'm inclined (having worked at cancer hospitals) to cut the man some slack.

As a experienced health professional I can opine that he does not look well. Personally I have never heard of any hormone imbalance that causes one to decline as he has. Cancer most certainly along with its treatment may have caused issues that are still making him ill

As far as APPLE we will be fine in the near term, I am sure that for the announced time frame important decisions have already been made.
 
This won't happen for the sole fact that there is no one star at CES. Apple would just be another vendor, and there won't be any iSheep at CES, either.

Have you been at CES lately? Apple is the star. Many products were influenced by Apple. Apple is the 800 pound gorilla. Even Microsoft tries to emulate Apple with a twist that only Microsoft can do.

And many products were also influenced by other sources. Let's not forget that Apple was influenced by Microsoft when they copied Instant Search and was influenced by Linux when they copied virtual desktops.

That's how the industry works. Everyone steals and copies from one another. In the end, everyone in the industry benefits as they make better products.

the question though, he had the operation performed in 2004...if his hormonal imbalance and nutritional problems were side-effects of surgery, wouldn't these symptoms start appearing shortly after the operation is performed? why all of a sudden, 4 yrs post-op?
 
I think all of us should put our energies here towards:

Writing a REAL get well card to Steve Jobs and send it to Apple's corporate headquarters.

Call the people in your life that matter RIGHT NOW. (I'm calling my Mom who is 3000 miles away, to just tell her I love her)

Wake up and realize that life is precious. There are unknowns at work right now keeping you going, your family going, your friends, etc. There is a FINE LINE between life and death, health and sickness, sanity and insanity.

Don't EVER take for granted the good in your life. Steve Jobs has helped create a product, culture, lifestyle that all of us take for granted. How many of you (us) sent him/Apple a thank you card when things were going well, or the stock doubled/tripled? Nope, didn't think so.

Take a minute to step back and realize life is VERY precious. It can be changed in the blink of an eye.

Write the man a REAL letter. Put some thought into it. At the very least Apple's headquarters will get deluged with GET WELL wishes and I am sure that will make an impact.

Respect the man and his family and most of all his decisions.

The pending litigation I read about regarding Apple and the current events is disgusting and a portrait of the state of this country and its inhabitants.

Can we as MacRumors citizens elevate ourselves to a level comfortably above the status quo?

I hope so, and I hope that Steve recovers soon.

I won't speculate since I don't know nor do I have evidence to prove anything. He said he'll be back in the summer so I'll look for him then and go with his word till that point.

As far as stock if I were an apple stock holder I'd be worried also.

That's completely true. The only people who actually know who Steve Jobs is are Apple's shareholders, people who work for the media, and people on boards like this one. Go into any Apple store today and you see a bunch of 13 year-old girls whose biggest decision in life is whether to get the hot pink or the purple Nano. The average Apple customer hasn't a clue who Jobs is.

Eh, I kind of agree. It'd be nice if the iSheep would shut up once in a while. Then people would realize that not all Mac users are arrogant, Steve Jobs-hugging individuals.

The man is clearly very ill AND the man is clearly a genius and the driving force behind the computer I love. Apple will surely take a hit, at least temporarily, if something happens to him.

But I wish for his recovery regardless of the impact on Apple.

Other than Ipod/Iphone accessories (the majority in appallingly bad taste) Apple didn't exist at the show.

Was Apple at the Blu-ray Pavillion? Hardly.

Apple TV? Just a hobby.

Did Apple get any Innovation Awards? No, best phone, laptop, music player went to companies who actually went to Las Vegas.

Can you please cite some examples as to why/how Apple stole the show?
 
Maybe because last time, THE IDIOTS PUT SOMEONE WHO MADE PEPSI IN AS CEO. Tim Cook knows how to run a technology company, unlike Scully did.

Scully was a disaster, but it was Jobs himself, not "The Idiots" who recruited him (hard) to be CEO of Apple, using the famous "do you want to spend the rest of your life selling sugared water or do you want a chance to change the world?" argument.

Steve, get well soon! Apple needs you.

Its a good reason that you priority is your health. I agree, but if Steve needs full recovery, he should be out of the office. Now and then, seems to be a major issue for apple (for t he icon that he actually is). Hope he is back with us. but I need to thank you Steve for the great products and the quality you have put in @pple.
