Yes and no. People need to stay engaged, however, stress is a bad thing. It decreases immune function. Working 40 hours a week give or take is good. Working 80 hours a week with constant deadlines and crisis after crisis, not so much.

He's already on suppressants, got it. But I think this is his passion and he loves what he does so much that it's not the stress you're imagining. He's got good people to handle the all stressful stuff, and lots of cool toys to play with in the labs. My advice would be eat your oatmeal, kiss your wife and kids, tell them you love them, and giddyup into the day ahead.

Time to buy, sheep.

Unfortunately, just looking at the prognosis on pancreatic cancer and SJ's general appearance would suggest that.

The type of pancreatic cancer Mr. Jobs has does not have all that bad a prognosis. The thing that makes pancreatic cancer hard to survive is that it does not cause problems until it has spread all over your body. All reports are, his cancer was caught early. I am not saying, it is not serious, it could be many bad things. It could also be issues related to stress.

Good luck, Steve

Best of luck to you and your family. Hope you beat whatever you are fighting with, and enjoy time with your closest. Here is to many years ahead!

For all we know, he's already been on leave. With up to 4 apple events over the next 6 months (iPad 2, new Mbps, iOS 5, iPhone 5) and the financial call tomorrow, it makes more sense to announce this now than explain away hid absence at all of these. It could be cancer again, trouble with his organ, etc.

One thing I get the impression of is that he won't retire. He'll dictate product plans from his death bed even if he's not acting CEO. At least, that's my impression.

He has not answered any "Users Letters " lately, it's been about three months since the last reply, given the very small number of people that actually meet with him we have no idea what his day to day activities are, I think he was hoping to be well enough to launch The Daily with Rupert Murdoch, but, given this announcement I think the stalling of the Daily may have to do with his health, rather than with Apple's Subscription Service..

I want to wish SJ a speedy recovery, first and foremost, for his family. Apple is secondary.

I think the people that voted positive may have done so not out of spite or being "jerks" but as a positive thing that he is taking time to heal and not continuing working for products that we want/desire/need.

Taking time to focus on health is a good thing. Being sick in the first place is the not-so-good thing.

Get it?

If I had to guess, (I understand, guessing about this kind of stuff is irresponsible) I would say, this decision has been talked about for quite some time in his family, but they made the decision on Saturday or Sunday. If they had decided before Friday, they would have made the press release on Friday just after the markets closed. This would have given a three day weekend for people to get the idea out of their system before the markets opened.

My guess, he spend the weekend with his family and decided it was time.

Wow. I can't believe Apples stock is the highest it's ever been and approaching the most valuable company in history. I really hope investors see that the new products this year should develop Apple's market presence even more.

Yeah and they report tomorrow too!
Gee, I wonder what the questions are gonna be about during the Q&A?

Not good for the stock. But it was well known his condition and outlook isn't good. So you cant blame apple for non disclosure.

Earnings should be good, but it will sell off hard and trail down. It's been on a tear straight up for a year. $100 drop wouldn't be a bad target to pick up some more.

But the market as a whole is way overbought.

Hope hes in a good place, good luck.

Although it may not be possible, Apple needs to prove to the world that while SJ is important to the company, that he's not only inspiration. You can't have a company that banks on just one guy. They've still got Jonny Ive and all those other guys we see in the 'fit and finish' videos. :D

As a moderator for a very active and drama-laden message board with passionate posters - I can assure you that feeding the trolls and NOT feeding the trolls won't matter. Those that like to spew their vitriol will do so whether or not you reply because they enjoy it as an outlet.

Ignoring them does about as good as when you're parents would tell you to ignore a sibling who was bothering you. How many can honestly say their sibling stopped? Exactly.

What stops a troll? Moderators or site owners who take an active role in removing their presence.

if the sentence was sans apostrophe, it would have meant to buy the sheep. nice try though...

Who are the 60+ people that voted this article to be positive? Who would actually be happy. Even if you don't like the guy that is a dick move

Who the heck knows what the blasted rating scheme means? I thought it meant is the story newsworthy not whether we 'liked' the news or not. I was trying to figure out why so many people were being negative.

I certainly wish the man a speedy recovery. Regardless of what you think of his policies, and business... 55 is too young to be facing these health issues.

There has to an "unmoved" mover. Life cannot come from non-life. It doesn't make sense otherwise.

No there doesn't have to be a mover. Life did come from non-life according to current knowledge. There's no need for things to make sense.
You can believe what you want, but don't state it as a fact.

Hope he gets well. It's unfortunate that we won't get to see him on stage when the iPad 2 is announced, or even iPhone 5. He brings a sense of charisma and entertainment to Apple that Tim Cook or even the other guys cannot, although they are still very knowledgable in their own right.

Steve will never retire from Apple - it's his life.

Wish you all the best, Steve.

It was humor. And the humor was based on a comma, not an apostrophe.

As a public service for the humor-impaired: :p

I wish him a speedy recovery!

That being said, he can't be CEO forever...he'll want to quit someday and enjoy life...as well as the fact that nobody lives forever.

But I have always wondered (even back in 1983), will Apple really continue to be such a creative and lucrative company when Jobs leaves? I believe not and feel within a few years of Jobs' departure it will turn into the run-of-the-mill publicly traded company that we all hate...stale products, lack of creativity, etc.

If Tim Cook becomes CEO sometime, I hope he continues every nook and cranny of Jobs' management style which is the only management style that has excelled Apple.

I don't understand why people say this. What makes you think he's not enjoying life right now? The best thing in the world for Steve could be working at Apple for all you know!

Get well Steve!
