Do we really need posts like this? Don't turn this into an Apple vs Microsoft competition thread. It's not necessary and wreaks of immaturity. Sorry - but it does.

The skinnier Jobs get's, the fatter Ballmer becomes. Is this the Universe's way of maintaining symmetry?

CES January 2012, Microsoft will unveil an iPad killer...for the first generation iPad, that is.

It is not like the man is dead. The anti-rejection drugs are suppressing his immune system, he got a bit of the flu and now he needs some time to get better. This is serious but not catastrophic. A small joke is not out of line.

I'm not implying that this thread is "serious business"... but really? What's the point in bringing Ballmer into the thread? And a "fat" joke?

I'm all for humor - but that's just stupid.

From a Materialist/Atheist standpoint, how does one account for immaterial abstract entities such as the laws of logic?

Those are not real things. They are systems we create to describe the universe and help us understand it. Other things like physics are rules that describe how matter works. You can't hold Newton's third law in your hand, but you can hold the baseball that just wacked you in the head.

Ah - missed that.

But I don't understand this article:

Apple Inc.'s Steve Jobs Takes Second Medical Leave
Reuters
http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/keyDevelopments?rpc=66&symbol=AAPL.O&timestamp=20110117172800

"Reuters reported that Apple Inc. Chief Executive Steve Jobs is taking medical leave for the second time in as many years, sending its shares tumbling as the unexpected news revived concerns over the long-term future of Apple. The news, which was disclosed early on a U.S. holiday when markets were closed, came nearly two years to the date after Jobs first took a six-month break to undergo a liver transplant. Unlike the previous announcement, Apple did not specify any timeline for Jobs to resume his duties. Jobs said Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook would take responsibility for day-to-day operations but he would continue to be Chief Executive and be involved in major strategic decisions. "

Reuters says the shares went "tumbling" but I don't see it reported when I look up AAPL. Where do they get this number?

Edit: I found it. Apple is traded on other markets I guess. It fell 7.5% on the "Frankfurt exchange", not NASDAQ.

As an aside - I will add that some site owners walk the fine line between wanting to keep lively debate vs full out trolling vs middle ground. Why?

Simple #s. Every hit to the message board results in advertising revenue. When you have people posting furiously to "beat each other up" so to speak - and on a daily basis - the site is more profitable.

I'm not suggesting that it's done here. Nor am I suggesting that it's done all the time. I'm just pointing out (what should be obvious) is that controversy has its upside to any website where #s count.

Cynical? Yes... but also not entirely inaccurate.

They are talking about the German stock market.

Foreign exchanges.

That was on 1-14.

the market is the worldwide...my dear us centristic friend...

-8%...

I just found it too and updated my post. I didn't know stocks could be traded on multiple markets. I wonder if there is a benefit to buying on multiple markets?

"US Centrist"? LOL . Hardly.

i dont think steve is the only one who has good ideas at apple and that the company will keep making good products even when he is absent.

No, Steve is not the only guy with good ideas or vision. However with him there the MBA weenies doesn't dare to "cut cost" and make things that's "good enough" or "Let's put it in a focus group"

That's the value of Steve...:):)

all major commodities are constantly traded, given the various timezones, this mean you can trade anything at anytime...

It's not just products, it's about focus and vision...I was an Apple user back in the late 80s and early 90s when he was NOT there, and can tell you that the whole thing was a MESS in terms of product lines and projects. Apple wanted to do everything at the same time, something that SJ and his team have wisely avoided since his return in '97.

Just read it, hope you well sir. You know some peoples comments are kind of negative, an people are worried about stocks?!

This guy changed the industry forever! New Mobile OS's from other companies, he put the cell phone industry back in the green! An made millions to accessory makers! He brought the future early! Hope you get better soon!

your enthusiasm is great. But let's not attribute "everything" to Jobs.

He put the cell phone industry back in the green? Yeah... ok.
