Your answer is somehwat biased. You yourself admit to having worked for a cellphone manufacturer. Of course it's fine that you have a sense of loyalty to that company. However, you can't deny that the iPhone very much so revolutionized cellphones. We'd probably still be using somewhat lame Blackberrys with no Wifi on them.

Sorry for being such a n00b, but... What's a cellphone?

I read as many of the comments above as I could before (a) I felt sick & (b) wondered at the heartless SOBs that found time to post.
Wake up & get a life - Steve is on medical leave of absence - the only possible human response is to wish him well. Nothing, but nothing else matters.

Okay, then explain to me why there's so little positive votes here and so many negative ones. In this case the negative isn't considered vindictive as it usually is. People are genuinely concerned about SJ's health and the health of Apple and the stock holders if he has to step down due to illness. Voting positive that he's reporting that he's taken ill certainly doesn't sound like any of the above.

I didn't bother to "vote" in this case.

Positive and negative are too ambiguous for stories like this. I can see the argument that him taking a break to rest is positive. If the story was simple: SJ is sick, then clearly positive and negative make sense.

I think its a generic option on these boards that should be turned off when it doesn't apply.

Wow. This kind of rabid consumerism really concerns me.

Seriously, your life would have no meeting without a chunk of aluminum with a stylized logo of a piece of fruit on it?

Just....wow.
Apparently, that's what an Apple gadget is to you. To me, it's definitely more than that. It earns me money, it makes me and my family happy. It secures our kids' future. But whatever floats your boat.

Full blu-ray implementation coming soon to mac os

FULL BLU-RAY IMPLEMENTATION COMING SOON TO MAC OS

BURNERS THROUGHOUT LINE; OPTICAL DRIVES REINSTATED

About time.

Best wishes to Steve Jobs for a full and speedy recovery.

And IMMEDIATE reassignment to an Apple iToy division.

Which, BY THE WAY, would ease the stock response to his eventual inevitable retirement, Apple Board.

Because some vote based on their emotional attachment to the subject and some vote based on news merits and informational value. MacRumors doesn't have guidelines on voting which renders the whole voting system useless in many ways. In my opinion MacRumors should clearly promote voting based on news relevance so one could easily filter out nonsense rumors from the relevant information (Page 2 isn't really doing it). Talk to any journalist or analyst and they can tell you that emotions have very little room when in comes to news and this is the way it should be. Voting on news based on your emotional reaction is not the right way to read, evaluate and benefit from the information.

EDIT: To make it more clear, in the case of MacRumors votes should be about credibility of information and news value. That would actually create some end user value instead of arguments about if this right or wrong way to vote.

I hope that Steve is ok, and that he feels better soon. He's had to deal with too much of this crap.

In other news, there goes the stock tomorrow morning...

Well you could look at it that way. I see your point. But on the other hand, SJ through Apple has left a stamp on our culture. The 21st century looks to be defined by Apple.

That gadget does all that by itself!?!?!?!

Wow, mine just came with OSX and iWork.

The 21st century looks to be "defined" by Apple? You people really are nuts. Its 11 years into the 21st century but if your level of prescience is that good then I'm appalled to think that the next 90 years won't bring any other accomplishments more defining than new OSX/iOS computing devices.

Personally, I'm hoping that the 21st century's defining achievement will be eradicating illnesses that strike down vibrant, creative men like Steve Jobs. Perhaps finally abolishing world poverty and hunger. Or maybe even finally ridding ourselves of such outdated and destructive notions like religious and racial intolerance.

But if you are willing to settle for something as pedestrian as a new gadget....hey, its your fantasy. Don't let me intrude on it.

APPLE BOARD! Just hire Justin Long to give the next keynote

And Apple Board... could it be ANY simpler?

Just hire Justin Long to do all future keynote addresses.

You could even have John Hodgman pop in from the audience to heckle him.

ESPECIALLY the next keynote announcing FULL BLU-RAY IMPLEMENTATION.

Really, it couldn't be ANY simpler.

This is an opportunity. NOT a disaster.

What I meant was - the joke was already made.

Oh. It's not a joke. Creative people have needed and been screaming for Blu-ray implementation for years.

Glad to see I'm not the first, nor the only one.

P.S. I usually do read the entire thread, but not before I've gotten off one or two posts.

I'd say Steve should just 'quit' and spend his retirement with his loved ones. But I'm guessing working at Apple is what makes him truly happy so who are we to begrudge him that. Hope he spends the next 24 months getting stronger and better and comes back with a sparkle in his eye. And a new outfit :)

I guess you don't understand the idea of which vote works based on your sympathy for him. If you vote positive in this case that means you're glad he's taking a leave and you're glad he's sick and you're glad there's negative news about him. If you vote negative in this case that means you are disappointed that he's now taken sick and you wish him a speedy recovery because Apple needs him. The positive votes in this case are from people who hate SJ. Are those your intentions?

Do you think everybody in this world must follow your method of close-mindedness? I can vote however I feel. How is it your business to tell people what is right or wrong? Believe it or not, Steve's health is more important than running a company. ;)

Always have to wish Steve well. I hope everything is okay for him. I know how worn down people with organ transplants can get. Get well Steve. :apple:

Sad News Indeed

Sadly, this announcements timing is quite telling.

There is no way Apple would have issued this, just one day before their financial report if they had a choice.

Needless to say this suggests both urgency & gravity. I wish Jobs the best.

Reading between the lines of the excerpt below, is very revealing.

"Jobs’s liver transplant took place at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. The surgeon who performed the procedure, James Eason, is an expert in treating recurrences of a rare cancer Jobs said he had in 2004.

The cancer, called neuroendocrine tumor, was discovered in Jobs’s pancreas. While the tumor is often slow-growing, it can spread to the liver where it can become life-threatening. Eason said at the time that he had replaced the livers of about 10 people with the rare cancer. Jobs hasn’t said whether his transplant was done to treat a recurrence of the tumor. Eason didn’t immediately return a call placed to his office today.

Cook, 50, took over daily management for Jobs during his 2009 leave. Cook received total compensation of $59.1 million, including a special bonus and stock in recognition of “his outstanding performance” during that period.

The company was criticized by some investors at the time for not disclosing Jobs’s health issues sooner.

Cook’s Role

“Apple missed an opportunity to hand the day-to-day responsibility to another executive” earlier on, with Jobs focusing on broader ideas and design while taking care of his health, Michael Obuchowski, chief investment officer at First Empire Asset Management in Hauppage, New York, said in an e- mail. “I am worried that the current decision to keep Steve Jobs as CEO is another mistake.”
