Hope he spends the next 24 months getting stronger and better and comes back with a sparkle in his eye. And a new outfit :)

Having a transplant is a downward-spiral health-wise. You can only influence the speed, not the direction.

That gadget does all that by itself!?!?!?!

The 21st century looks to be "defined" by Apple? You people really are nuts. Its 11 years into the 21st century but if your level of prescience is that good then I'm appalled to think that the next 90 years won't bring any other accomplishments more defining than new OSX/iOS computing devices.

Oh dear. Someone doesn't want to except reality...

Its like Henry Ford and the automobile all over again.

Steve should just 'quit' and spend his retirement with his loved ones.

Those who are profoundly absorbed in their work do not "quit" it well.
Prime examples are Charles Schultz ("Peanuts") and Stanley Kubric ("Eyes Wide Shut", etc.) - when they decided they were done working (the former at 50 years on the cartoon, the latter at completion of post-production), they died within days.
I can't see Jobs functioning without Apple. He loves his family of course and wants to be with them, but methinks there is just no severing him from Apple any more than severing him from his liver.

(Sorry if that didn't come across well. You get the point.)

Sadly, this announcements timing is quite telling.

There is no way Apple would have issued this, just one day before their financial report if they had a choice.

Really? I think they did it today on purpose. Today was a federal holiday so the stock market was closed and tomorrow Apple is expected to announce record breaking earnings.

Perfect day to release the news. Give the market a day to digest it so we may not get the big drop that many expect. It will go down though.

That site is a satire of Christian fundamentalism and the US religious right. Don't take it seriously.

LOL - I was about to post same.

I think the moderators deleted the original post.

Sadly there are religious groups like this in reality.

I dunno. Probably something to do with an iPhone though.

But what the heck is an iPhone?:apple:

It's the phone that people use to talk to each other face to face.
Some poor people like Kenny can't afford iPhone so they're stuck with Googlefone. :(

I disagree. I think they released it specifically when they did so the negative effect of the announcement on the stock would be tempered by the absolutely blow-out quarter they are about to announce. They are trying to reduce volatility by announcing on a day the U.S. markets are closed and right before amazing positive news. I don't think it implies extra seriousness.

Do you think everybody in this world must follow your method of close-mindedness? I can vote however I feel. How is it your business to tell people what is right or wrong? Believe it or not, Steve's health is more important than running a company. ;)

Yes, in fact it is my business as well it's everyone else's business here since you posted on a public forum and shared with everybody what way you voted. If you want your business kept to yourself then don't post. I do have a right to comment on your post as well as you just commented on mine.

I clearly didn't say you couldn't comment on my posts... what I said was you have no business telling me if I'm right or wrong for voting how I did. There are no rules on which vote means what, so I can vote how I feel. For me, I believe it's a positive thing that he's focusing on his health instead of trying to run a company in his condition.

Personally, I'm hoping that the 21st century's defining achievement will be eradicating illnesses that strike down vibrant, creative men like Steve Jobs. Perhaps finally abolishing world poverty and hunger. Or maybe even finally ridding ourselves of such outdated and destructive notions like religious and racial intolerance.

But if you are willing to settle for something as pedestrian as a new gadget....hey, its your fantasy. Don't let me intrude on it.

The 21st century will largely be defined by information technology. Information technology is largely being defined by Apple.

War, hunger and people who sit at the green light will all be eliminated or reduced by technology. Where do you think these technologies will come from? Microsoft? Eventualy, manufacturing and shipping will be largely replaced by design licensing and home rapid prototyping. These home matter compilers will be designed or inspired by Apple. The licensing system will be designed or inspired by Apple.

In 50 years, when you want a new car, you will download it from iTunes. The foundations of these changes are being made today.

Do you really believe this? All right just stay calm and set the glass of iKool-Aid back on the table and slowly back away. It's going to be all right... these nice men in the white jackets are gonna take you to a really nice place where you will get to do finger paintings and play games with some other really nice people and when the weather is nice you will all get to go outside and play games as long as there is someone available to watch you... and if you have taken your meds.

We'll see about that. In the words of Steve Jobs, "It's not as simple as you think when you're in your 20s - that technology's going to change the world. In some ways it will, in some ways it won't."

I have friends who are working on the home rapid prototyping technology I was talking about. With what we have today, it seems very far off. Fifty years ago, a 9 inch black and white TV seemed like science fiction. People talked to people in other states by mailed letter because long distance phone calls were only for the rich. Computers with less proccesing power than a digital wristwatch cost more than anyone but the biggest corporations could afford. Many countries could not afford a computer.

The rapid prototyping technology today is slow and costly. It can only be used to make small things. It will evolve on the same pace that the computer did. Eventually, the cost of making anything will be the cost of the raw materials, the energy to run the MC and the license for the thing you want to make. Technology runs faster than you think.

So in this timeline the Enterprise (NCC 1701-D) will be designed and built by Apple you're saying?

Or inspired by.

Steve Jobs is so cool. Hopefully he comes back soon, and healthy! I remember in the first Apple conference with Steve back, he took the time to thank the kid and his family who died in the car accident for being organ donors so he could have the liver.

my ten pence worth

I've never submitted a post to these forums before but I often 'drop-in'. I just needed it to be said that I was a windows fan..I built my own liquid cooled PC and my first visit to an apple store had me seething in fury thinking that apple was making a buck out of plagiarising Unix and Linux...

I now have two iPhones, an iMac, a Macbook Pro and an iPad! Boy had I been wrong!!

I'm 38 and am the head of two departments for a large UK company. IF all companies were led by someone like Steve then maybe the world would be a better place.

Respect to Steve for his commitment and loyalty. My well wishes and admiration go out to him and I wish him a speedy recovery!

Wow!

That must be some extreme mood elevating, imagination expanding, cool aid being consumed.

I'm thrilled it's not available in my city. Phew!

"Those" technologies don't come from Apple. They come from the military contracting firms. And for the remainder of this century, I highly suspect the overwhelming majority will come from China and the remainder of Asia.

I thought a few of the posters in here were just gushing fans of Steve's. But now, I think you've nailed it. There are some seriously broken reasoning bits around here!

Look, I wish nothing but the best for Mr. Jobs and his family. I hope this is really is just a sabbatical or whatever. I don't think that to be the case, but I WISH it were the case for his own sake as well as that of his friends and family.

But he's one man. His company's products dominate a few markets and in others hold a minority share. He's a control freak with a management style that gives 1960's-era "Command and Control" management textbooks a GOOD name by comparison. But he's not the Savior of the Human Race. Given his pretty obvious lack of philanthropic endeavors to date, inclusive of dismantling Apple's own corporate philanthropy division when he assumed control in 1997 (and never reinstated), I'd say his legacy is embedded in his product. Once he dies, that product isn't going to carry his soul forward no matter how much Buddhism he practices.
