Best wishes to SJ and hoping he returns soon.

Probably a good time to take leave... 2011 plans are in place. Apple is poised to do well and he has a great team.

Get well soon Steve.

Smart PR move to release it on a day the market is closed.

I wish him a speedy recovery!

That being said, he can't be CEO forever...he'll want to quit someday and enjoy life...as well as the fact that nobody lives forever.

But I have always wondered (even back in 1983), will Apple really continue to be such a creative and lucrative company when Jobs leaves? I believe not and feel within a few years of Jobs' departure it will turn into the run-of-the-mill publicly traded company that we all hate...stale products, lack of creativity, etc.

If Tim Cook becomes CEO sometime, I hope he continues every nook and cranny of Jobs' management style which is the only management style that has excelled Apple.

You know, there are other creative minds on the planet...

I know this is a horrible thought, but I have the terrible feeling he won't be back. I'm afraid the end of his life may come during this leave :|

He looked seriously ill at the Back to the Mac event and after all he's been through i'll be surprised if he shakes this one off.

I really hope he pulls through though. No one markets Apple like Steve. Not to mention he gives FANTASTIC Keynote presentations

all the best to SJ, but that time Time Cook ran the company was a lot better. as soon as SJ came back he started with the control/walled garden nonsense again

Get well soon, maestro.

I hope all goes well for Steve and his family. I feel so sad that a great man has any health issues that requires time off as it must be very serious. :(

Get well soon Steve!

I hope Steve is reading these forums.

Bill Gates retired around the same age, although he is still the chairman of Microsoft and oversees some of the decisions. I think it's a good idea for Steve to do this, it doesn't necessarily mean it's something serious. Perhaps he actually does just want to take it easy and focus on his personal life and health?

..and Microsoft has been GARGABE ever since. Hope APple doesn't follow that fate.

Managing the message

...they have had several of these now and Cook has stood in brilliantly in all of them. Over the last year or two they have pushed more and more people to the front of the presentations... Check out the "Back to the mac" event and you can see, Steve is more or less the MC... They've known this for a long time...

Then you have Tim Cook on stage with Verizon instead of Steve... It's not a sudden thing, they are managing the message, like they do with EVERYTHING apple makes, says or does...

And let's be honest, Tim Cook has been taking care of "day to day operations" at Apple for the last 10 years. Steve is the vision guy who happens to be fanatical about the execution of that vision down the last detail. But he's spent 10 years getting others to be equally fanatical.

He has taken an almost bankrupt company to be the second most valuable in the world (who knows when it will become the MOST valuable, I wouldn't write that off, given where they started in 1997 when he returned!)

If I were Jobs, I'd say "I think I did what I was asked to do and I think I can retire now." But he's Jobs, so he will forever be part of apple product strategy until the day he dies (which is hopefully many many years away.) Hence, they are managing the message so they wind up with a new CEO but Jobs very much seen as the man with the vision... They'll wind that bit down over time and ramp Ives, Schiller etc up on that side...

They are a smart group of business people and they are figuring out how to manage the (private) issue of a CEOs health against their duty to their shareholders.

No one can argue that Apple hasn't delivered for it's shareholders...

Just my 2c/p.

Just because Steve is leaving for a little while doesn't mean Apple will go 'poof' or something.

As much as I hate the Apple circlejerk that goes on in regards to their products...Steve did have the vision for the company and its products.

If you want to know the difference between Microsoft and Apple. Bill Gates had idea's, Steve Jobs had vision.

One good thing about his leave right now is Apple is pretty much on a track for the next 2-3 years. Their immediate future is set in stone, i.e. app delivery, Mac updates, etc.

My concern would be who is going to come up with the next BIG thing for Apple?

I do think Steve was the driving force behind 80 percent of what Apple does today.

Look what happened while he was gone.

time to sell off all the apple products ....

while they're still worth something.

Let's face it folks. This is it for Steve. He will NOT come back. They are smart by announcing a 'medical leave of absence' as to not shake up the investors too much (but their stock will take a hit). They will let Tim Cook run things during some successful launches to show people he can get the job done.. then later announce Steve's retirement.

Jobs doesn't seem like the kind of guy to retire unless his health is really, really poor. I can see Cook taking over as CEO permanently, but even if that happens, you can bet Jobs will still be heavily involved in some way (likely in an advisory role, or a role on the Board of Directors, that doesn't require as much day-to-day operational work, but still gives him the power he loves).

One of Steve Job's strengths was in building extremely competent management and creative teams. I have a lot of faith in the guys running the show in Steve's absence.

I met Steve during his NeXT years when I was developing for the platform. He's quite a dynamic guy in person.

I hope the leave helps him get through this health issue, and back on his feet.

Get well soon, Steve.

The press release gives little sign of optimism. The shares will plummet I guess. Get well soon Steve :(

The market is closed today. The stock will take a hit but won't tank. It dropped during his first leave of absence but quickly rebounded.

"I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company" is a pretty optimistic statement.
