I'm not surprised by the name. Genuis is a description is that is over used these days. It has lost its meaning. If a millennial were in the room, they woud have called it the Awesome Bar.

Great customer support, even when at time I need to tell them what is wrong :p

The "Genius Bar" is often the only reason I visited an Apple store—for repair service. So it could as well be labeled that, or Geek or something else perhaps more accurate. As principally staffed with those who know how to answer low-level questions. Anything more complex is referred to the few in the store who really understand the underlying technology.

Its a good experience but some of these "genious" folks arent that informed. Prime example is during the iPhone 6 bendgate fiasco.

Im at the store waiting for my screen replacement when I see a girl claiming her iPhone 6 is bent. The genious then takes the phone puts it on the table CAMERA side down and sees it rock back and forth.. He then says "Yup its bent"..

I mean cmon now.. really?

Have you been to a Genius Bar lately? It doesn't work. Getting an appointment is deliberately obfuscated online (and no longer possible in the Apple Store app from what I can tell) and doubly so if you have a Mac that needs help. Want to do a quick drop? Oh, no they don't do those anymore.

I had to wait THREE WEEKS for an available appointment when my iMac was kernel panicking. That's unacceptable.
You can use the Apple Support App to make an appointment.

I actually find them a bunch of condescending ***** that wouldn't survive in a real IT job! Completely failed to recreate an issue with the fans on my 2011 MBP spinning up and being very loud when plugged into an external display. When I asked them if they plugged it into an external display they said 'No', but since their software couldn't find the issue the issue therefore didn't exist. They even went as far to tell me I'd bought the wrong product!! I had to create a video and show it to them, and even then after having the machine a week they didn't do anything. Claimed they replaced the thermal paste on the GPU, but the problem still existed. Had more GPU issues with a rMBP, which they also couldn't find. Took to an independent Apple reseller and they replaced the logic board under Apple Care. Job done. No questions asked.

RIGHT. These trained professionals should totally just take you at your word, and just start replacing everything you say! GREAT IDEA! Maybe next time you should stroll your entitled *** into the Apple Store and tell them in your "expertise" you need a new Mac for free! Based on your terribly uninformed logic, they'll just bend over and give you a new machine!
Go buy a Windows machine. It's what you deserve, homie.

Steve could never be replaced. What a genius. The best of the best of the best. He was 20 years ahead of everyone else on this earth.

"On the recode podcast Johnson said"
I don't believe what anyone writes, the media is always try to divide, argue and stir the pot. They take things out of context, make them up or omits fact. They find people willing to tell anything for either fame or just stay relevant. Lots of people would do anything to get attention.

Like many others have noted, the Genius name has always made me chuckle a bit - especially when I've been at the store for service. I'm usually there, having self-diagnosed the problem, and really just need the "Genius" to authorize the repair / replacement. The great thing is that I've never been unsatisfied with how I've been treated or the end results.

Have never had a good experience at the Genius Bar any of the handful of times I went. Couldn't see obvious problems, manhandled my items, impatient. Maybe it's just my local store. That said, have only had positive experiences with the employees on the sales floor, who always seem to go above and beyond.

One of the qualifications for a CEO is to resist new ideas, to challenge the person who suggested it, to fully explore the idea by making him sweat, and then proclaim the idea as your own!

I've had really good experiences with Genius Bar. Sure the 25-year old working behind the counter is probably only somewhat tech savvy. But I'm almost always getting something serviced under warranty (so I'm paying nothing or possibly some modest amount) and I know these folks aren't paid that much. Pay a tech support guy $150 an hour and you will get more (though sometimes you won't really get all that much more). But we aren't talking that price point here.

Anyway, appointments seem to start generally on time. Stuff can be done onsite while you wait. And everyone is pretty nice even if they do try to move quickly so they might be brusque at times.

Terrible name though. "Genius", ugh.

To someone with a genius IQ, especially one who joins Mensa solely for the ego boost... Yeah, "Genius" is a terrible name. The existence of "Geniuses" with sub-genius IQs clearly devalues the entire notion of "genius."

But that's not the point, genius. To the vast majority of tech product users, anyone who knows how to solve their problem is a genius. They're not going to ask for an IQ score before declaring, "Thank you, you're a genius!"

The average person has enough common sense to understand that "Genius Bar" is a marketing term, not a promise that they'll be working with an MIT PhD.

As marketing terms go, I think Genius Bar is quite brilliant, a whole lot more evocative than, "Repair Shop," or "Tech Support." It suggests a quality of service that will be above normal expectations, that a solution will be found. To the vast majority of Apple customers, the name seems to work brilliantly. They flock to the Apple Store for the Genius Bar experience, they consistently rank Apple tech support as the best. The term is as inextricably bound to the Apple brand as Macintosh, iPhone, iPod, and iTunes.

If you do know more about Macs (or iPhones) than Apple's Geniuses (who are not hired for their IQ scores, but for other characteristics, social as well as technical), you are in the minority. Feel free to boost your own ego by testing your knowledge against store staff, and be sure to come back here and boast about it.

Sad that a visionary like Steve has been replaced by a bean counting pleb like Cook

Hopefully he'll get the boot soon and Scott can come back and reclaim the promised land !!

Genius bar has worked wonders on multiple different computers and iDevices for me. It is also the only reason I visit an Apple Store.

Exactly! I see, Jobs comment as an example when people at the top (CEOs) or some of those with more advanced skills in one area than others, think that their believe is next to the word of God! Lol. Then, Jobs contradicts himself in the video: "People just don't want to buy computers, they want to know what to do with them". Can you remember the day when you just wanted to buy a computer for the sake of just owning one!

“I remember the day I came in and told Steve about the Genius Bar idea and he says, ‘That’s so idiotic! It’ll never work!’” Johnson said. “He said, ‘Ron, you might have the right idea, but here’s the big gap: I’ve never met someone who knows technology who knows how to connect with people. They’re all geeks! You can call it the Geek Bar.’”

Scott Forestall seems very awkward to me. A true geek yes but not the sort of personality Apple needs for its CEO.

If only Steve Woz was interested.

Scott was the chosen one but he got the stabbed in the back attack from his supposed pals

See Julius Caesar

Hair force one should be doing all the keynotes imo. Tim Cook just isnt good at public speaking. He sounds way too forced and it get awkward.

Agree. Tim Cook has a terrible slow monotone drawl not helped by his Southern Alabama accent or wherever he's from. I've said it before but he's in serious need of vocal coaching. But I don't think even that could save it because it stems in large part from his personality and character which are entrenched.

Craig "The Hair" is a polar opposite and speaks very naturally and engagingly and with great enthusiasm.

It's not the same now as it is was originally. Now they refuse to allow you to talk to someone if they deem it irrelevant or unprofitable.
