Steve's health

I keep seeing repeated references to Steve's health, usually relating to his thin appearance at WWDC and his use of multiple sidekicks throughout the presentation.

Nobody seems to mention that a mere one or two months later Steve put up a splendid performance during the "It's Showtime..." event where he was in typical top-notch form, and presented the entire hour plus event all alone.

Just seems to me typical Steveness: he was unimpressed (as many of us) by what he could display during WWDC, and decided to wash his hands of that event. He really did seem like he was uninterested in the whole WWDC thing.

In any case, we will know in a few short days.

I could see Steve taking a Leave of Absence IF he had been tied directly to the Options mess but he wasn't. I think this is an old rumour tied to the Options case. If guily, he takes the LoA, if not, he won't leave.

I agree with what many of you are saying...Apple is doing well right now and the loss of Jobs would be a major blow. It simply isn't going to happen.

Could it be he is about to embark on a new project ala Pixar? Not all Leave of absence has to be gloom and doom. If Apple has all it's ducks in a row for the next year or so. Could be time for Steve to start his next big thing.

Yea, uh, I was there and didn't notice that... and ususally I notice that kind of thing.... I think some people just look too deeply and see what they want... for whatever reason....

Why is it looking too deeply? The source of this entire article originally said that the leave of absence was due to his health. If for no other reason, that drives the speculation about his health here in this thread.

What I meant was at WWDC 06....

Grooming A Successor

This is actually an important topic, because Apple is really a Steve Jobs personality cult. Any time you have an organization built upon a single prominent personality, the organization itself is in a precarious situation. Take Cuba for instance, the whole country is a Castro personality cult, and now that Castro is in poor health and might be dying, the entire direction of the country is in question.

It really is about time that Jobs started grooming a successor. He already had a bout with cancer, and he's not in his twenties or thirties any more, and even if he was, he could get hit by a bus. Apple really needs an heir apparent, even if it's only for setting stockholder's minds at ease.

Thank you member named motulist. You hit the nail on the head. As a stock owner and mac user from way back, I finally feel Apple has earnings and directions and products which more than warrant that Jobs start grooming a successor. Even if he was 45 with no past health problems it would be smart to reveal strong company others who could link our confidence with input/roles/statements/actions/responsibilities from some of the other Apple insiders/staff/VP's ....:)

that would be not good if he was leaving, but it's going to happen someday. like others have said, getting a successor together would be a good idea.

al gore could be a good new face for the company. i mean, he did invent the internet and all. jk

If indeed Steve is inviting all his close friends to this macworld, as I believe one of the articles mentions here at this site...then it may be true.

People tend to leave, quit, retire, etc. at the peak of the career...

Peace

Here is a Bold Assumption Based on Reports

I'm curious if the major announcement tomorrow will be that Steve is retiring from Apple and will hand over the reins in 2008.

This is possibly what the banner, "the first 30 years was just the beginning" is referring to on the Apple Web Site.

TheStreet.com predicts that Steve will take a leave of absence.

MacRumors has posted information that Steve has invited all his friends to tomorrow's Macworld.

I hope that tomorrow is not a disappointing date for Apple fans.

I don't think that is what the announcement would be, but in all seriousness, Apple fans need to prepare for the eventuality that at some point, Jobs is going to retire or at least step down from Apple. Whether it's tomorrow or 6 months from now or next year or 5 years from now, he's not going to be CEO forever. I think he's put Apple on the right track though that it's not going to just fall apart without him there.

Well I for hope Steve is not going to announce he is stepping down today. But there will be a point in time when it will happen.

And it may well be that everyone misread the "the first 30 years was just the beginning" as a new product, but in fact is a signpost to Apple moving ward under a new leader.

Well I for one hope Steve sticks around for a little while longer :D

I can't picture Steve announcing his resignation alongside all the new products/announcements that will happen today. Wouldn't it take some buzz away from everything? Obviously this (unfortunately) has to happen one day... I just don't see it happening at a big expo like MacWorld. I'm hoping the announcement is in the form of a press release or something of that nature.

Today's going to be fun no matter what. :)

Exactly, Steve is a showman. The only way he announces his resignation is if he precedes that with something so mindbogglingly amazing that the only thing left for him to do is take his final bow.

The Street is an infamous gloom&doom short sellers rag that flings a lot of negative BS about companies on the wall hoping something will stick.

believing something written there is akin to believing something you read in the hollywood tabloids at the checkout counter at the supermarket.

I think this is kind of like psychics in a way too. A lot of people will have a tendency to ignore the failed predictions of a psychic, but when they predict something that does happen, people will really grasp at that.

I think that places like the Street realize this too; no-one's going to remember their prediction that Jobs would be stepping down, so it did them no harm to bring it up. And if Jobs had stepped down, they would have remembered it and it would have boosted their credibility. It's win-win.

Maybe after his comment of not seeing family while products were being worked out perhaps he is going on vacation? I would guess he could go to Disney, any continent or coast, whenever he wants to. He probably has a season pass.

Maybe this will be Steve's last hurrah. That is why he had the touching moment for his employees and families. This is why iPhone is announced uncharacteristically early - because he won't be around for launch, but he wants to be the one to introduce it (and why iTV was 'previewed' before, so it doesn't overshadow this announcement).

Bye Steve.
