He probably left MORe than 2 years of input for the future;):apple::apple:

I think there's a whiteboard, or Minority Report style heads up display, somewhere at Apple HQ that lays out the next 4 or 5 years worth of hardware.
Jobs was there.

He'll be missed in the details though, like these ugly GUIs that have crept into iCal and Find My Friends. Apple benefitted tremendously from having a top notch negotiator at the helm to craft deals with content providers and the like, I don't know if an army of Tim Cooks could be as persuasive.

Tupac released more songs after he died than while he was alive it seems. We will see many "previously unreleased tracks" from Steve Jobs coming out of Apple for the years to come. The most important thing Steve Jobs created at Apple was Apple itself. He created the environment and culture where people can make the very best and innovative products. Siri was a vision that Steve Jobs had many years ago -- they even referenced the Apple video that illustrated that vision in their pre-acquisition presentations. Steve thought many years ahead, but like Siri, he did not create the things he envisioned. He hired (or acquired) the right people to make it happen. As long as his vision is in place, I believe the people he put together will execute on that.

The biggest thing that will be missed at Apple is Steve's innate ability to know when something was not quite right and when it was ready for the world. He had great instincts. He hand-picked Tim Cook as the man to take the reins for a reason -- I am going to trust that instinct too.

I'm sure Steve Jobs' influence will be felt in Apple's products for many, many years to come. From a business point of view, it isn't at all like when he was ousted because the company was pulling in a different direction to him, he's left a thriving business with focused and clear ideas and an ethos that will continue to drive excellence for a long, long time I think.

I would draw parallels with Disney. Many might have thought that when Walt Disney died the studio could not continue, but it did, and whilst never being exactly the same, has, mostly, held onto a strong ethos and company DNA that has seen it carry on and still produce great products long after its initial visionary left the world.

For one day, can we please shut up about at least the rumours and mourn the death of such a legend?

Sorry, but I'm as sad as I was last night.

People deal with death differently. Some would like to remain silent, some would prefer to discuss the things that Jobs left to the world. Neither is wrong, neither need be disrespectful.

It's so weird to be mourning a man I don't personally know, but his products have touched my life. Amazing. I'm sure the next iPhone will be awesome.

Apple had a special place in Steve's heart and that cannot be replicated. We're left with tools with MBAs like Tim Cook who get into unnecessary and distracting pissing matches with major suppliers. They will mortgage Apple's long term brand for a short term uptick in their bonus in a heartbeat.

Does it not factor in it all though that Steve personally recommended Cook as his successor? I know Apple is not going to be what it once was, but to think that it is going to fall from grace as it did last time Steve was no longer at the head of Apple is a little naive. It's not the same situation at all, really. Yes, way down the line things could change for this company, but that honestly could be said of any company really. I just believe Jobs when he said he had every confidence in the world of his staff at Apple. It won't be exactly the same (it just can't be), but it will still be a version of His Apple.

Tim Cook is great... here is a CEO at Apple for a reason... if you can do it better, DO IT!!! Otherwise stop whining...

Yeah, we can't forget he has been Relief CEO for a couple of years while Jobs was ill, he's no Steve but he was chosen by him to be his successor, it's gotta mean something.

Apple is REALLY going to suck now. Tim Cook walks and talks like every other high-tech CEO. We're screwed...

He's barely even had a chance to settle into his new role at Apple. Yes he's stepped in as CEO when Steve was away before, but the circumstances are very different now. Just the fact that he was able to make it through the presentation on Tuesday, knowing that a good friend and mentor was very near death, says a lot.

Steve Jobs was an amazing man, and there isn't anyone else quite like him. But that doesn't mean that Tim Cook and others at Apple don't have a lot to offer. At least give the guy some time to actually do his new job before you start passing judgment.

From my friend Leping last night

There were three apples in this world:

One seduced Eve, one that awakened Newton, and the one in the hands of Steve Jobs.

For one day, can we please shut up about at least the rumours and mourn the death of such a legend?

super lame that this story is on here right now. At least take the darn day to honour Steve Jobs and leave the original post as the feature.

It's not about the rumor. It's about the legacy of Steve Jobs living on for years to come.

Apple will be fine, and continue to lead the world in innovative technologies. Steve Jobs was an amazing CEO (and I speak as someone who is lucky enough to work for his company), but he wasn't a great CEO just because of his great ideas. He built a culture that has been engrained in every Apple employee, from retail to corporate. Everyone who works for Apple knows this, and no one in the company is afraid that we will compromise the companies integrity now that Jobs is gone. It won't happen.

Hey moron, you realize that Tim Cooke is the probably the best operations / supply chain mind in the tech industry (if not all industries) right now? All of Apple's VP's were hand-picked by SJ so I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt simply because I trust SJ's judgement.

Besides, like others are saying, the next two years' roadmap is laid out and have Jobs' fingersprints on them. After that we'll see what happens. No doubt SJ's passing away is sad, very sad but I'm sick of hearing Apple is dead now because he's not here. Yes, it won't be the same but doesn't mean you should write Apple off.

Sorry, but I'm as sad as I was last night.

This is going to sound callous, but why not just keep refreshing the big thread from last night? You didn't know him. People die every day. It's sad, but life goes on. Some of us want to keep staying up to date today. Why come to the front page if it's only going to upset you?

Steve may have set a roadmap, but there are always unexpected developments in technology that affect a product's design. Steve won't be there to help Apple respond. He won't be there to hammer out partnerships necessary for the products to succeed, either. Nobody could persuade or strong-arm people like Steve. And the RDF at product unveilings is now gone. Who will communicate the magic of a product to the consumer? Tim Cook? Don't make me laugh.

It's no use pretending Apple is fine without Steve Jobs. Apple was Steve Jobs.

I can't bear thinking of them as just another technology company now--it's just so wrong. But it's true. I wish them the best, but they are not the same.

(Bill Gates-->Microsoft)=the "Jock~Straight" types

versus

(Steve Jobs-->Apple)=the "30 Days In The Hole by Humble Pie is a classic" types

“WHEN THE DUST SETTLES, IN THE END, THE ONE WITH THE MOST TOYS, WINS”

Bill has left the scene. Microsoft is mediocre blah. I don't have to stick around for the finish. I already know. Steve and Apple will win.

From my friend Leping, in an email to me last night.

I wonder if they were all the same apple...;)

True this. It must take every fibre of your being to have delivered that keynote they way they did in those conditions.

I'm usually quite strong in these things, but looking at that empty chair I think I would just fall apart.

Steve is the one who hand picked Tim Cook. Does anyone here really think he would have done that if he thought Cook was "just another CEO"? Really?

Seriously... Everybody morns differently. If you really so upset about his passing, why did you even come online now. Have some respect about other peoples grieving.

Besides, Steve build his product within a culture that talks about the company and future innovation, there is no better way to honor him than to talk about his life work and the work that will still inspired his vision.

it was always about his vision of the future...

Agreed. And well said.

Siri was a vision that Steve Jobs had many years ago

If you look back, Steve never shifted much in his vision. He had brilliant ideas back in the 1980s; he just didn't have advanced enough technology to implement them. How different was the original Mac from the current iMac? They're both embodiments of his vision to have a simple and elegant computing device. He envisioned the possibility of Siri long before he was able to make it a reality. I'm sure there are many other ideas he had that will finally begin to see the light of day.

The biggest thing that will be missed at Apple is Steve's innate ability to know when something was not quite right and when it was ready for the world.

I think that was his biggest contribution to the company: his obsessive and relentless pursuit of perfection. That's the mindset ("culture") that I hope he was able to create at Apple -- an unwillingness to accept second-best, a determination to create perfect technology that integrates seamlessly with people's lives.

Whenever I look at Apple now, or any of their product, I can't help but remember Steve Jobs is no longer with us.

I think it'll always be like this.

Sounds to me like quite a few people on here need to surrender their Apple products and deactivate their macrumors accounts...

Another thing to consider: Steve has been (obviously) very sick these last few years. And while it is clear that he still was involved with Apple, obviously others had to step in to fill that gap. Although the way he died is terribly premature, the fact is Job's has been slowly dying for awhile now. The transition from "Apple presented by Steve Jobs" to "Apple presented by a Talented World Class Team" has been in the works for some time now. As others have said, give a them a chance without the great one.
