Bloomberg reports that Steve Jobs was intimately involved in the design work for the next-generation iPhone scheduled for release later this year, reiterating claims that the device will be a substantial change from previous designs in part because of a larger display.
Apple, based in Cupertino, California, has placed orders from suppliers in Asia for screens that are bigger than the 3.5- inch size now on the smartphone, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans aren't public. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs had worked closely on the redesigned phone before his death in October, one person said. [...]

Apple has been working on the new device since before the current iPhone 4S model was introduced last October, said one person with knowledge of the project. Jobs, who had gone on medical leave from Apple starting last January, played a key role in developing the phone, this person said.
Bloomberg becomes the third major publication to offer an independent report this week regarding a larger display for the next iPhone, following The Wall Street Journal and Reuters yesterday.

Not a surprise that he would have been involved in this design
These would be in the works for a while

I just hope it isn't the "tall" design in the mock ups

So it will have a larger display. That's cool, because ill Be ready to
Upgrade from my iPhone 4 when the new one comes out

Not surprising at all. The New iPhone will be the largest consumer product ever launched and will blow away the competition. This phone will surprise us all. :apple: The New iPhone:apple:

Well thank God. If nothing else, one thing you can say about Steve is that he made GREAT products.

 How can you be surprised if you're expecting to be surprised?

Oh Yeah?

Here we go - something tells me this "Steve Job stamp of approval" is going to be coming out for a lot of future apple products well into the future.. Seems like this man continues to change the world even after he has passed on.

When Steve worked closely on a larger iPhone, there will be no more saying '3.5" is enough for a phone' comments because Steve said otherwise ;)

I just want LTE and I'll be ordering it on Day 1 (of the availability of the unlocked version, that is). A slightly bigger screen would be a bonus. Anyway, it doesn't surprise me that Steve Jobs was involved. He was forward thinking, and surely took notice of what was going on at Samsung. I don't see an "iPhone Note," but a 4" screen is perfectly fine with me.

OH MY GOSH! This is probably one of the last products that will have a bit of Steve left in it. I am SO friggin excited for this new iPhone it's not even FUNNY.

I read (will look for article) that SJ was obsessed with the 6th gen iPhone since around the time the 3GS was transforming into the 4. And that for the last year+, he pretty much put everything else aside and focused most of his time working on just the phone. And even working on it the day before he died.

Now, I take all these stories with a grain of salt, but they are fun to read. I just hope that come October we get one jaw dropping device that shakes up the industry like original iPhone did in 07.

It's not like you're going to want to announce that Steve didn't work on something. Even if he had the tiniest involvement, hyping it up has to be good for sales.

They will say Steve was attached to many projects moving forward.

a) it's most likely true for the next few years
b) it's good PR for stockholders
c) it's good PR for apple fans
d) it's good PR for the press

But - isn't it funny how so many MR posters insist that Apple would never change their size from 3.5" because STEVE (and crew) had done so much research (5 years ago folks) and determined 3.5 was optimal.

Can't wait to see all the backpeddling

This was SJ's 1 more thing, OMG I want this so bad

Hope it's released on October 5 on 1st anniversary of the most inspiring genius in my lifetime

Basically whatever makes the most financial sense for Apple is what Steve liked to dub "optimal," and "best for the customer." Had nothing to do with actual usability.

3.5 is perfect for a phone. If Steve thought 4 was good, that's great. I still rather have 3.5.

Optimal was whatever Steve had at hand to sell. That's not saying he didn't put effort in finding an optimal solution or that he wasn't good at that. But he touted every solution apple was selling as optimal, and that's quite different. Forward to 2012 and the ipad mini is going to be boxed with sandpaper so people can file down their fingers to use it. ;)

3.5 is optimal. If they change it, it will be less optimal.
