Happy birthday and RIP Steve.

Makes me sick that a PC talking head with zero vision like Cook is eulogizing a man he's not worthy of sharing the same space with.

I understand this sentiment. When I watch this video, it's hard not to get emotional -

Very little of what Apple does today invokes an emotional response. Very little of what Apple did was ever the first in anything, but Steve was the champion for the Apple consumer. It was the attention to detail, the little things - there's nothing bigger. This came in the form of software quality (yes post Snow Leopard while Steve was there has been a bit of a mess), hardware innovation, and finding new markets/innovative spaces for computing. When Steve when in his prime, Apple was firing on all cylinders.

Apple today is a phone/mobile operating system company. What have you seen from Apple that isn't an evolution of what already existed?

Steve was about revolution, upsetting the established order. That certainly does not exist at Apple today. Apple today exists for quarterly results.

Pray tell, what product did Apple ever release which doesn't meet this criteria?

The iPhone's web browser and operating system were at least 5-7 years ahead of anything on the market at the time. Even the Android guys were stunned - http://bgr.com/2013/12/19/original-iphone-android-story/

Sure, it was a smartphone. But it was so much more than that. It was the details.

It's not enough to be a year ahead, or even 3 years ahead. It's being 5-7 years ahead that is the hallmark of a revolutionary product that defines a new market. And that doesn't necessarily mean throwing new technology at the wall (VR/augmented reality) and seeing what sticks. It's understanding what a couple hundred million people want in the future, before they even know it exists.

Apl the company. apl websites and fans remind me of Egyptians :

SIX years later...

"Steve Jobs Theater" , flowery proclamations, scrolls?
Several really bad movies.
Endless YouTube "what steve said" snippets
Annual web posts..

He's gone ..let it go

RIP Steve Jobs, happy birthday MR site

Apl Park(s)...Will Tim get one , how about Woz, or Scully...will we get yearly updates and memorials after all of their passings? Will they be interlocking circles aligned with Orion's belt?
With every Iphone sale is that like making bricks for these Apl leaders?

All this really does posts like this one ..is it allow everyone to bash Tim annually on a dead persons birthday and realize how extremely lucky apl got with timing on on two product lines Apl2/Mac and iStuff starting with iPod....nothing more thats apl (overcharging at every turn, suppliers and consumers alike) . not really fair is it?

Pretty sad really some people are that into a single corporate leader even Hoover did not get that much press or limitless memorial services..was Apl your life ? Really? thats sad. Add up your apl $$$ purchases/bricks (do the math) and move on, do you need you name scrawled on one of the curved windows to move on ?. Let Steve Jobs go..that was ages ago. Was this article even necessary, what purpose did it serve? Could a been a mention of MR birthday and stopped with that without the focus on a six year old dead person.

Did people do this for Henry Ford LOL one could argue mass produced affordable Ford cars > overpriced limited smartphones from apl..I don't get this cult consumerism mentality. Apl tattoos, kids names what?

Internet browsers existed beforehand. You can argue that it was just an evolution of that. It didn't do anything different, or even better than an Internet browser on a computer at the time. It just so happened to be on a mobile phone.

Everything Apple have ever done is in some way or another an evolution of previous technologies. This is more than obvious when you have a look at the comments at the time. Apple didn't invent touchscreen. Apple didn't invent pinch to zoom. Apple didn't invent scrolling. Therefore the iPhone is nothing new or great.

Your criteria is both vague and all-encompassing, which grants you the power to cherry-pick criticisms for new products you don't like, whilst deifying the "golden days" of Apple. Basically, you're cheating. :p

Actually I've provided some concrete examples with respect to technology timeline runway of what constitutes a revolutionary product and backed it up with the lone competitor's response (as a % of market share), in their own words. Thanks for playing though, you made a nice attempt.

Apple's financial results speak for themselves - Apple success today comes from the iPhone, which he championed. Cook career has been living on Jobs' success, and attempting to screw over suppliers. The suppliers are now saying - to hell with you, you'll pay the prices we're quoting. Apple passes along these higher prices to consumers. Or you'll want for component prices to drop (OLED screens) where the next largest competitor (Samsung) has had these components for a few years now.

The Apple watch, Cook's champion product, is insignificant to pretty much any other part of Apple. The (growing) services business exists because the app marketplace ecosystem that Jobs created.

It may take 10-15 years, but Apple will decline because of Cook's ineptitude.

I politely disagree. Regardless I'm sure we both hope that Apple will continue to make some innovative products now and in the future. :)

Thank you Arnold for creating MacRumors and all the curators keeping it as sane as possible ;)

Steve was one of the crazy ones that believed he could change the world. His legacy will not be forgotten.

I miss watching his passion pour out of him when he was on stage. You could tell that it was his apple. No matter how anyone feels about Tim, good or bad, it's just not his apple. It's just how things played out. It's depressing though. With that said, I like cheese cake!

Let me know when you can refute any of the points I've made.

Oh, you're serious. Well this thread will quickly get derailed.

Apple's market value between Steve's death and now is proof enough that what you're saying simply can't be true, about riding the coattails of Steve's success and doing nothing else. Whether or not you 'feel' it's as innovative is beyond the point.

Not saying everything is perfect. But it's far from disasterous. Apple are in a much stronger position now than they were in 2011.

I will never forget the joy and spectacle that came from watching a keynote when Steve was presenting. He loved Apple and gave the business his everything up until the very end, even during a time when many others would have stepped away from the business as a whole in order to live out their final days, weeks or months. He was truly one of the most passionate people this planet has ever seen. I have no doubt that another 62 years from now, his impact will still be felt. RIP Steve.

Congratulations to you both! I hope there will be some positive news related to Apple soon!

Like or loath Tim Cook, it's pretty much indisputable that he understands what he's doing, nor do I think things would be vastly different if Steve had survived. Apple shifted focus from being solely a computer orientated company some years back, what we see today is the result.

People should respect Steve for who he was.
