Happy birthday and RIP Steve.

Makes me sick that a PC talking head with zero vision like Cook is eulogizing a man he's not worthy of sharing the same space with.

Way to get personal without adding any value whatsoever.

Tim Cook is not worthy of talking about Steve's vision as if he understands anything about it. Prove me wrong.

Sometimes life includes humane aspects beyond the amount RAM you would like your Mac to have...

What is really sad about Steve Jobs death is that while most forms of pancreatic cancer are basically untreatable, his was treatable with a good chance of success. Steve chose not to treat his cancer using standard medical practice but instead tried diet and home remedies. There is no guarantee that had undergone standard cancer treatment he would have recovered but in hindsight his chances were probably much better if he had.

What an honor it is that I get to share the same birthday as Steve Jobs!

You made the right move, Kim. Jealous of you. Happy birthday to your creation and thank you!

Agreed...

Thanks for keeping this going and building it. Between the naysayers, the quiet observers, and the overt fanboys, it is quite a community and melting pot of discussion about Apple.

At the end of the day, it's a great resource that you have worked to provide. Thank you.

The quality I admire the most about Steve was his relentless ambition for perfection.
Something obviously lacking at the current Apple. Jobs used every product and was intensely angered by ease of use issues and obvious bugs. And if they weren't fixed heads would roll. Not always the best place to work, but good products were the result.

I don't think Tim Cook uses the products. I don't think Jony Ive actually does either. If they did, MacOS wouldn't be so buggy, iTunes wouldn't be so bloated and complicated, the Watch interface would be completely different, and displays and networking would never be left on the vine to whither and die.

Its interesting that this flashback was posted on MR today. I was just reflecting yesterday on how messed up, ugly and backwards the Mac OS has become since, well... starting around 2012.
To the point that I've lost all enthusiasm for it.
I was thinking about if this mess would have occurred if Steve Jobs were still here today. The answer I know is ... No.

I of course didn't know Mr Jobs, but I knew his mac. And Apple wasted no time trashing it after his death. Pity.
Yep. I was an advocate and switched many to the Mac including helping them purchase. I have not recomende the Mac for a while. There is no point. It is overly complex yet too dumbed down at the same time. You might as well just use Windows 10 for that kind of experience. And the computers cost much less.

HB, MR! Thank you to both MR, and Mr. Jobs, for their unique contributions!

Without one, I would not be living in a cool future, and without the other, I would have no where to speak about said cool future.

Now if only someone could properly replace him.... I can almost guarantee his vision for Apple was NOT for it to be solely a fashion/cellphone company! He loved the Mac, and he loved its professional users. #UpdateMacPro

If only they had healthkit...and "complete your rings" what could have been, Why oh my WHY!was expensive device innovation so slow!

It's one of Jobs biggest mistakes.

Give Tim a break, the low hanging fruit tech was tapped out during Steve Jobs lifetime (touch phone. Tablet short term follow-up) , I doubt Steve Jobs would have made any difference..any future innovations seem to require much more effort than "easy tech" innovations/assemblies versus "boring" competitors. You would probably be bashing him as well by now Surface Pro/Studio would have still happened.

The world moved beyond single limited expensive devices and siloed apps is what really happened. Apl simply is not as relevant now as an expensive very limited device company with expensive siloed app store. Tim literally panicked afterwards took a fatal turn and took a huge gamble choosing the wrong path in CORPORATE LIFE...he made "we protect your privacy" a sales pitch in a public Internet/ cloud world....does not resonate, that will be their ultimate downfall by severely limiting their ability to compete.

(sigh) Jobs appointed him and blessed him to run the company as he was in his sickness. Let it go. It's was Jobs' decision.

Happy Birthday to you! I hope it's a great day for you, @adepew

Best wishes to any other forum members or "lurkers" celebrating their birthdays or special anniversaries, as well. :)

Happy Birthday MR. So many others have said it so much better than I could about how special this site is and how we appreciate it being here, and all the people who work hard to keep it a place worth visiting. I echo their sentiments.

As for Mr. Steve Jobs, sir, thank you wherever you are, for the products that both free me and enslave me, and always entertain me. They're a blessing, a curse, and always my precioussssssss. :D

I imagine you're not a fan of the new MacBook Pros, so we'll stick with things you hopefully agree with.

In-house designed mobile chips with double the per-core performance of the nearest competitor. Exclusive business partnership with IBM. Next gen open source programming language and new file system. Ubiquitous services such as iCloud and iMessage. Over 100 new Apple Stores. Just really consider the larger picture and how much Apple have changed.

Where you see incremental updates because you lived through the curve, others see incredible growth and products that would not have been imagined in 2011. What you see as lack of vision because of a few belated hardware updates, others see a larger long-term vision because of the foundations Apple are laying.

And these are just things in the public eye. Apple have been known to be secretive from time to time.

So although you're entitled to disagree with these points, I don't think it's fair to say Tim has only ridden the coattails of Jobs' success. Regardless, I'm happy to end this debate here if you are.

"In-house designed mobile chips with double the per-core performance of the nearest competitor."

Which started with Jobs.

"Exclusive business partnership with IBM."

Which has yielded what exactly? Put a $ amount in terms of what % of Apple's existing market cap is attributable to this effort/resources that were directed to it. Or your guess for new revenue from iPhones sales because this program that now exists.

"Next gen open source programming language and new file system."

Swift is a good investment, but it's not there yet - https://twitter.com/iTod/status/834832202168954880

APFS _still_ doesn't have checksums (https://arstechnica.com/apple/2017/...on-apfs-file-system/?comments=1&post=32814415), which is ridiculous. Just give me the damn checksums.

It's a huge step forward from HFS, I'll give them that.

"Ubiquitous services such as iCloud and iMessage."

Both were created under Jobs direction.

"Over 100 new Apple Stores."

On the whole - I'll give you APFS and Swift. The rest are mostly from Jobs efforts.

Regardless of what anyone thinks of him personally, what anyone thinks of his company, it's impossible to deny the impact Steve had. HB SJ.

Love the main page photo of Jobs Macrumors chose. It's a good picture of Steve. Thanks Macrumors for the article.

Wait, so MR is legal now?

He made lots of mistakes. He had a few hits. Also lots of misses.

He was at least tangentially involved in the Newton, which was a good idea but technology wasn't there yet to successfully implement it, and his long time refusal to use a two button mouse. The original Apple Mouse had a lot of detractors.
