Staples is everywhere, and often open late at night.

It's always good to keep a few spare cartridges on hand for those late-night printing emergencies.

eventalking with people who work there, noone ever buys or asks for printer accessories, as honestly theyre not really a printer based store, theyre consumer giveaway insentives.

besides it much much cheaper to goto the local office store to have them refilled, thats what ive been doing =)

its not a fault, its just the necessity and demand of the store.
just one more thing for the stores itself to buy and sit on their shelves and never sell, maybe once in a blue moon, but to them its not worth it.

You should always have cartridges ready to go as they run out quickly. Stop blaming others for your oversight.

It probably isn't worth the shelf space at Apple for them to carry it. I just wish there was a standard for all printers. Every printer seems to have their own. Then perhaps it would be easier for Apple to carry it in stock.

+1 for that. That's why I choose laser, it's more expensive so stores are more likely to stock them, since they make more money off that item. And theres no need to get worked up. Apple is a COMPUTER company, an ink cartridge world. They just sell the printer just to make things more complete. Calm down.

Lets also get one thing straight, were only talking about -two- SKUs here. Not ink for every printer Apple every sold. Just the one that they sell today.

The Apple store I go to carries 5 ink printers, two b&w lasers and 1 color laser. Some of those ink printers have two cartridges (B & color). Some have 4-5 cartridges. So you'd have the separate ones, plus combo packs. That adds up to a lot of space, imo.

The Apple store I go to is about 25 miles away. Between home and the Apple store, there are 3 Best Buys, 2 Circuit Cities, 3 Costcos, 2 Sam's Clubs, and God only knows how many office supply stores, Wal-Marts, Targets and Fred Meyers.

Again, just my opinion, but I'd rather Apple carry the iPhone cases, since there are probably 20 places that sell ink that are closer to home.

I understand your frustration of having driven all the way out there to buy ink, but surely you understand, now that you've heard the opinions of others, that it's not necessary for them to sell ink. Especially at of their smaller stores. The only small one I've been to is the Fashion Show mall in Vegas. That thing is so tiny, they don't even have room for a proper Studio.

Hmmm...

Golly..let me think...

OH ya, they were empty.

Apple doesn't sell copies of Windows, yet they offer bootcamp.

But seriously, your complaint is ridic. You can't justify this level of whining for something so insignificant.

wha?

You're mad that you somehow can't spend an extra 150% on buying from apple and are forced to buy it a cheaper place?

Get a hold of yourself.

The SF Bay Area has been pretty resistant to WM's.
But not to Staples, Office Max, Office Depot, Target, Walgreens, Fry's, Best Buy, Costco, RiteAid, Circuit City, Sears, or any of the other places where you can buy ink.

Honestly, you're probably just about the only person that thinks of an Apple store as a place to buy ink or paper--especially since it's not even an Apple printer. There is nowhere in the Bay Area where an Apple store is more than half a mile from a place that sells ink.
Havent you noticed how _thin_ the merchandising really is inside an apple store?
Yes. There's a reason for that.
"Ya, we dont carry that, but you can check out the Saturn dealer down the street..."
Yeah, that happens all the time. I wouldn't go back to my car dealership to get accessories for third-party products, either, even if they happened to have sold me said third-party product originally.
I didnt need a cartridge next wednesday, I needed it last night, and was in a time crunch where digging thru Frys would have taken to long
So in other words, you wanted to go to a place with a limited selection to save time, but want to complain about said limited selection. Staples is fast and requires no digging.

I used to work in an Audio and TV department of a big department store in Edinburgh, and quite frequently we'd have to direct customers to Ink Cartridge World simply because we didn't have them or they weren't in stock.

Having worked in a place that had, seriously, over 100 different types of cartridges from the main manufactures, I'm not surprised Apple has decided not to stock them.

I don't blame Apple, and I don't blame my old work for not having them all or stocking them all consistently.

It is the printer manufactures who are causing this chaos by having so many different types of cartridges. It is pointless, and the only aim is to create money. Someone will buy a new printer, and they'll have to use new cartridges for that printer, even if they have some older ones lying about.

There is literally over 30 different types of HP printer cartridges - this is just pointless. No need for that many; a photo cartridge, inkjet cartridge, laser printer cartridge. That's it! That's all they need.

Not that I'm defending Apple, but I'd direct your abuse at the companies who just confuse the consumers by having a stupid amount of variations of their cartridges.

Yep i can easily see how this is Steve Jobs fault lol

I swear, once I turned around to grab a can of Soda, and when I looked back at my MB, there Steve was, crouched on top of my table, with a chisel and hammer on it's cover. I blinked.

And he was gone.

Blimey.

Look out for Luzzio's next appearance in the thread: OMG, Spilled Soda into MB!!

Maybe you dont appreciate your time to go 30mi outside of your daily grind to get something you know you need, from a place you KNOW should have it, and while youre at it, maybe shop around for some small crap you dont really need, but its all there anyway?

A lot of us do, and Steve burned an hour out of a tight day, for a really important thing I had to do for home..and I cant get that time back, neither can my daughter who was not able to deliver her invitations on the last day of YMCA daycamp.

Any questions Mr Freetime?

Well,Mr Procrastinator, since you brought up my post trying to bust my chops...I will respond.

You will get no sympathy from me. I would love to drive just 30 miles to the Apple Store. The Nearest Apple Store is over 600 miles from me. Secondly, why on earth would you for one think that a COMPUTER COMPANY, who builds and manufactures COMPUTERS, would sell ink cartridges? Do you go to Burger King to order a Big Mac as well?

Secondly, why do you want to fault Steve Jobs for your busy schedule? Seems to me your passing the blame to someone who doesnt't deserve it. If your busy schedule prevents you from losing an hour in a 24 hour time period I suggest you to lighten your work load. Maybe moving out of California could help you with that.

Its amazing to me that you would blame someone else over something you have complete and absolute control over. You are the one who decides your schedule. You are the one who decides when you need to accomplish tasks. Yet your the one who waits to the last minute to see that your printer has sufficient ink to print your tasks. Then when you find out you need more ink, YOU again decide what store to go to. If it were me, and I had to drive 30 miles to pick up ink at the Apple Store, or drive 5 Miles to Walgreens, Office Depot, Staples(and the like) then I absolutely would drive the 5 miles. Especially since your already had a "Tight" day.

Maybe your busy lifestyle is messing with your head. Id suggest taking a chill pill and learning to relax a little before you have a heart attack.

Regards,
"Mr FreeTime"

If you dont wanna sell HP ink, stop selling HP printers, thats just stupid.

When you grow up, you're REALLY gonna be upset when you discover that car dealerships don't sell gasoline! Or clothing stores don't sell replacement buttons. Or stores that sell electric razors don't all sell replacement screens and cutters.

Stores sell what they want to sell. They have zero obligation to carry everything you want to buy, or to locate their stores within easy driving distance from your house. Get over it!

Agreed, stores are obligated to sell anything, but it makes sense to carry a few of the basic accessories for products you sell - since that is where the real profit comes from, the accessories.

There's a LOT more profit on a MacBook Pro or ACD or iPod than there is on a print cartridge. Supplies are commodities, sold against heavy competition, both online and in office supply stores, so there are very thin margins. I'm sure Apple has carefully researched what they want to sell in their business model and they know what they're doing, as evidenced by their stock being up more than 400% in the past 3 years.

Yes, on Apple products there is a higher profit margin. However, there is very little profit margin on that printer, and probably about 20-30% or more on the ink.

When I worked at best buy years ago, we got 5% above cost as our discount. I paid $20 for ink that sold for $40 to everyone else. There is a HUGE margin on accessories.

wow. so many things wrong here. if this was so important, you should have called ahead. what if they did carry them but were out? are you still ranting at that point? oh, and i'm not sure, but i doubt steve jobs personally oversees what the stores stock.

anyway, as many folks have tried to make you understand, there are a million places that sell ink cartridges, and i'm guessing at least one of them is closer to you than the apple store that is 30 miles away. if one of my kids had something important to print out, i think i'd try them first, but that's just me. and i think i'd try an office supply store that i know stocks these sorts of things before i tried a boutique computer store.

also, next time you run out of ink, don't wait til something important is due to replace it!

we even have ink cartridge specialty stores here in georgia now, one stop shop for all your ink needs!

Okay, I'm usually resistant to troll bait, but I'm curious.

Why didn't you look for the ink rack when you bought the printer?

For that matter, after you bought the printer at a location "so wildly out of the way", why didn't you check for more convenient ink retailers?

Based on overwhelming evidence, I'd have to say that Steve "gets it" just fine.

I always keep EXTRA ink cartridges at home because I always run out right when I need it the most.

But why would you go to an apple store for ink? just go to any office supply store.

This thread has now lasted longer than the average ink cartridge. :p

In agreement

I hear that with the new management change Apple will introduce a computer one can stand on and it moves you around town at a leisurely pace. It's maneuvered with your legs so you can use the keyboard and mouse on top and the display is in front of you. There's a dock for an iPhone and iPod.
The only problem is that you have to buy the wheels from Apples idealogical soulmate, Walmart. :)
