That's true. I normally have notifications set to notifiy me when a score changes, period ends, end of game.. Things like that. I'm using the yahoo sports app. It's pretty good.

Really? My Yahoo sports app recently stopped sending notifications. Missed scoring of Saturday's Stanly Cup finals.

he might have twitter on his first page? :/
and the twitter client should pretty much load instantly, no offense.

oh, another thing.

doesn't that ESPN app with it's notifications pretty much ... serve as a lockscreenwidget aswell? kind of? ... it's the latest scores ... on your lockscreen :/

wow fellas. seems like people are getting confused between a 'widget' and a 'notification bar message'

widgets can be manipulated. you can scroll within a widget, tap items within a widget.

with notification bar message, its static. it shows one message.

android handles both notification system messages as well as widgets flawlessly.

Widgets are useful for some and worthless to others but I think enough people care about having that functionality that Apple should incorporate it into iOS.

Agreed.

I was surprised we didn't get widgets, but not devastated I guess.

Open source = more time tweaking and customizing.

"Controlled curated" = more time actually using.

Honestly though, if you like widgets, you know what to do. Most iOS users don't want that stuff.

I did that too but got annoyed at getting constant notifications. I'm not saying that widgets are for everyone but I think a lot of people would use them. It would just be nice if iOS users had the choice. That's all I was saying.

I find it works better if you leave the app open in the multitasking bar. Once I closed the app from there, and the notifications did fail on me. I know how you feel.

Try leaving the app open in the background, and see if that works.

looks like you're doing more work to get to your twitter app than me.

Yes, but if that's your home page then you're doing more work to get to everything else on your phone.

So I'm being inconvenienced 1 out 10 times and you're being inconvenienced 9 out of 10.

Unless Twitter is the only thing you use your phone for?

I think its funny that everyone says how superior ios is to android's operating system when apple copied a ton of android's idea's with ios 5! Looks like ios is not as great as everyone thought or apple would come up with their own idea's and not use androids!!

I can't wait until iOS 6 when Apple does widgets & live wallpapers "the apple way". Whatever that means.

you're not getting it. you're the one thats having to swipe through your pages of icons to find your twitter app, tap on it, wait for it to load, and see what your twitter feeds are up to.

what i'm doing: i swipe once to the left.

looks like you're doing more work to get to your twitter app than me.

What the rest of us are doing. Swipe once to the left and type "tw" and go. Double tap home button and find twitter app. I get that widgets are useful but you showing us your Droid X full screen widget doesn't really drive that point home. The amount of time that you save by not having to open a twitter app is pretty negligible. Also the amount of time that it took you to take that screen shot by hooking it up to your computer is probably a lot longer than it would take me to do it on my iPhone, just putting that out there.

It's not just about the time, it's the convenience. I have the USA Today app on my iPhone but I probably haven't opened it in a month. It would work much better as a widget where you could scroll through the latest headlines without having to consciously open the app every single day.

I'm not sure why anyone thought we'd see widgets. Those things are so unApple to have on a phone. It would made the OS way too cluttered.

I'm disappointed that the springboard hasn't been updated at all. This UI was designed in 2007 without support for some of the major elements of the OS that have been added. They just keep awkwardly splicing UI elements in and it's getting a bit crowded.

Agreed, I was hoping for some changes, and no widgets are a big letdown, I have them on my jailbroken phone and they don't effect battery life at all.:(

i actually use a small handful of apps that improve my productivity as well as streamline my news sources.

i only have 5 home screens.

and no, it doesn't require more work to get to my other applications. i have one homescreen dedicated to apps, another homescreen dedicated to twitter, etc.

you're actually the first person to say that widgets are more inefficient than grids of icons.

lol. its hilarious that people are trying to argue that widgets are less efficient than just a grid of icons. guess what, instead of arguing that widgets suck, why didn't Uncle Jobs at least have an option for consumers to choose if they want widgets are not? There are more phones with widgets than none at all. Lets remember that there are more mobile-based Android OS smartphones out there than mobile-based iOS out there.

i'd rather see the twitter interface right on the homescreen since i'm an avid twitter user. thats just me though. you're still tapping multiple times to get to twitter app, even though the time to get it open maybe negligible. you're still doing a bit of thumbwork.

no, i didn't hook up my smartphone to a computer to get those screenshots. i used a very handy app called drocap2 that enables you to take a screenshot and upload it to picasa (iOS5 Photo Stream equivalent, only picasa's been around for years).

I honestly wanted to jump to my first iPhone with iOS 5, but this update is just playing catch up. It took some of the best features from Windows, Android, and Blackberry. I have mint, calendar, battery monitor, espn, facebook, audio controls etc as widgets on my android. Only taking up 3 screens. I don't even have to open those apps. Unlock>look> swipe left> swipe left. Done. I know all my plans for the day, bank account status, sports score, latest facebook updates or whatever else is important to me. But the worse part is knowing that Android Ice Cream Sandwich is gonna hit maybe a month or 2 after iOS 5. I love the design of apple hardware above all others, but it honestly comes down to the usability to me. There is already an app that's been out for a year or 2 for android that does the lock screen notifications called executive assistant. Or you could just use widget locker to put widgets on your lock screen. The iphone 5 could still convince me to switch platforms, but the iOS failed to do so.

aren't these, like ... lockscreen widgets?

I agree - who's to say that the notifications somehow can not be developed further in ios5 to include more information than a text or email or score...not many people have the sdk yet and if they do - they are in moscone.

the iOS UI is ****ing outdated as ****! anyone who says they are not sick of it is in denial.

For all of you posting the Android screenshots... I'm sorry but your UI looks like garbage. That's probably my biggest problem with Android... the clunky look and feel of the OS as a whole. I had a Nexus One and just the UI animations and transitions weren't smooth.

lol nexus one. thats like comparing a Galaxy S II to a first gen iPhone.

i posted the screenshots. guess what. you can make your android look exactly like iOS if you choose to. but who would? i'm more than happy with widgets, and i am making customizations that appeal to ME.

you sound like a hater to me. just sayin..

I'm not sick of it, and I'm not in denial. I haven't even owned an iPhone for two years, and no by means am I ever close to sick of it. I owned my previous flip phone for 7 years... And that piece of junk was only able to make calls and text. Not to mention the battery died after like 3 hours of using it.
