I actually like his review. He seems like a NO BS type of guy who tells it to you exactly as he sees it and you can agree or disagree but you know where he stands. He also tells you his gripes without hesitation. He's not just marveling at the phone like I saw the others doing which is to be expected.

Definitely my favorite review so far.

I don’t really think you can tell someone they need to deal with compromise on a $1000 phone. The notch affects everything. If samsung had the design of the X then we would be complaining about that and if Apple at the GS8s design, we’d praise them for being notch free. The display is the most visible and important part of the phone.

Honestly, I feel that Apple could have just made the screen near the notch all black to blend in with the notch. But, alas, I’m not the CEO of Apple.

The phone itself seems incredible. I’m sure it is the best Apple has made.
Yes you can because everything is a compromise. Literally any device you get has compromises. You can agree or disagree with them but make no mistake they are compromises.

Well, it's an evolutionary product. Next year, we will all hear "it's the best iPhone ever made" superlatives. To me, Apple's only NEW products of the last five years is the Apple Watch and AirPods. That's more innovative. It's cool getting hyped for it but seriously? What do you expect them to say? Worst iPhone?

I compare iPhone X more to Super Mario 64. In 1996, SM64 was hailed the greatest game ever. I beaten it on N64 and DS. It's a pretty amazing game for its time but I believe Mario Galaxy, Odyssey, and even Sunshine surpassed it. Now if you go back, it is no longer remembered the best or greatest. Mario 64 is not even my favorite Mario game. It's Super Mario World, then NES trilogy with Super Mario Bros 2 being my #2 fav and that's the lowest rated one.

When I go back to play Mario 64, it took two years to develop but it doesn't feel finished. It felt rushed to be the centerpiece of N64's launch. Some levels are just plain and no textures with N64's limited storage. That's the kind of vibes I get with iPhone X. Prisoner of the moment superlatives. It's going to be a great device and very polished for a Gen 1 of a new design. But best Apple product ever? Relax. It's going to be great that can only get better as time passes with its successors.

It's not revolutionary. It's only evolutionary. Even Super Mario 64 felt more revolutionary watching Mario walk in a 3D world and not many rank it the best game ever anymore like they did in 1996. By 1998, Ocarina of Time surpassed it. Now many games surpassed both games and only gaming nostalgia has kept them relevant. Reviewers are HYPE folks. Video game reviewers and sports talk analysts do the same thing too. Hype, hype, hype the industry. Prisoners of the moment. Honeymoon phase intoxication because it feels new.

Face ID
Animoji

Gesture controls and OLED have been around for years. Gestures can be software-added for older iPhones. Same SoC and RAM as 8 Plus. Same Portrait Mode. Essentially the same rear camera with slight differences. Rene got intoxicated by too much Apple Kool-Aid spiked with alcohol. This three seconds of your life is the best ever! No, this three seconds of your life is the best ever!
Completely agree. Next year when iOS 12 is released we’re going to hear about so many complaints from iPhone X users. Rinse and repeat. Once the honeymoon is over, people will wait for the next thing. It has happened every single year since the iPhone released.

The iPhone X won’t age well because it’s simply the foundation for the future. Apple’s gonna see what people liked or didn’t like and drastically change later releases. Remember when we thought 3.5’’ was here to stay and then we eventually got the 6 plus. But that phone didn’t age well because it had way less ran than it should have. But it helped make later iterations awesome.

The iPhone X, to me, is a bigger test of post Jobs Apple than anything. Is Apple willing to canabalize itself in order to progress forward? I think yes.

It felt as if you were just quoting the Apple site. Maybe that’s why you feel attracted to Rene’s style.

A review on a site dedicated to a specific company is always going to be totally honest and completely unbiased. Everyone knows this!
I always measure things relative to each other and I consider the circumstances around these things. So I ask questions about how often has this guy made a comment like this?

That doesn't seem true at all. The 3.5" display was used for four years, and my iPhone 6 Plus still runs perfectly fine with the RAM it has. Yes, the next iPhone will be better than the X, but that doesn't mean the X won't age well or that it's not the best phone now. I think the iPhone 2G didn't age well because it didn't use 3G when most phones were already making it standard, especially outside of the United States. But there were no larger screen sizes for the next two generations.

I have been hearing that for years and Apple doesn’t do that. They stick to a design and improve on it. Take the macs as a recent example. Everyone thought the new MacBook was going to fail and then they made the pros the same design. Also touchbar isn’t going anywhere.

The iPhone X might be a great phone, but this reviewer is the most biased reviewer on the internet, as far as I've seen. I can't even take that website serious anymore, because of him. Look back through his Publications, and you will see articles defending the 16GB entry-level storage back when that was still the case with the iPhone.

Again, I'm sure this is a great phone, but I can't take anything he writes serious.

Well that is exactly what Apple is doing. They are telling customer they can deal with it or move on. That is their story and they are sticking to it -- next year too. I'm not a notch fan -- who is really?, but it's there. I'm sure I'll forget it's there soon enough just like I got over the camera hump in the 6.

Serious question. What would be the solution? How would they house the technology, going back to bezels?

I think it’s good that pretty much all reviews have said the notch is a non-issue.

I'm not an engineer, I've never played one on TV, and I didn't stay in a Holiday Inn last night so I'm really not qualified to answer that question. Best I can tell Apple still has a little pride in it's products aesthetics as much as the functionality itself so I have to think the notch is there because, for now, it is the best solution, given the tech that it hosts.

It seems from your tone maybe you misinterpreted my remarks. I think one can not be thrilled with the notch but still like the X. I mean EVEN Rene Ritchie doesn't like the notch. Not admiring the notch is not a knock on Apple or the X anymore than a Nationals fan grousing about the teams bullpen doesn't mean they are not going to watch games or stay past the 7th inning -- they are just commenting on a piece of the team they hope is improved in future generations.

I watched the video and it just feels Rene is spewing HYPERBOLE. It's from iMore so of course they will say things like that. I will wait for a review from Mr. Mobile, MKBHD, and Dave Lee who can act like contrarians and aren't exactly obsessed with Apple. They do use Macs though.

It's no different when video game reviewers are giving perfect scores to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey perfect scores and hailing them as the greatest video games ever right now. Two decades ago, they praised Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time. Now they rank high simply off nostalgia while other games did surpass them.

I do think the iPhone X is the most exciting release since maybe the 4 or original. Bigger release since it will be available on all major carriers and 57 countries.

Keynote rank -
2007
2010
2017?

Only time will tell us more. Coolest name written for an iPhone. I wished they did pronounce it as Ex.

I gotta stop you right there. Odyssey is friggin’ incredible.

Although I do have to say some games get automatic 9s no matter how bad they are. Call of Duty and a whole bunch of others are simply rehashes but get good scores (Love me some Black Ops though) . But I digress.

Nope. I haven't even looked at the content about iPhone X on the Apple site. I'm just giving my own honest opinions.

It maybe the best iPhone but not the "best bang for your buck iPhone". The iPhone X is not 2x better than the iPhone 7.

It easily is 2x better when you factor in the whole package. Bionic processors, that gorgeous screen, better battery, cameras, Face ID. For iPhone 7 users the X is a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge upgrade.
[doublepost=1509632279][/doublepost]
OK, I think you've set a new standard for over the top hyperbole on this one. Nobody's going to top you.

Now as to best Apple product ever? I disagree, I don't think it is.

What do you think they've done that is better? Obviously the original iPhone launch was very significant, but it had a lot of shortcomings at the time. iPhone X is effectively the next-generation iPhone and it doesn't have any shortcomings whatsoever. This is why I think iPhone X truly is the best product Apple has ever made.

Rene spoke often that he wished Apple would drop the 16GB entry level. But he also explained why there were legitimate reasons at the time for it, such as corporate buyers who don't need or want their employees using a lot of onboard storage. Those corporate devices are locked down, and they want the lowest possible price. The 16GB entry point helped Apple sell to corporate customers.

Rene Richie stated his personal opinion nothing more. Why or how he does it, is nobody’s business.

Yes he's entitled to an opinion, and he certainly backs his opinions up with well rounded arguments. The iMore review of the iPhone X is one of the best written so far.

How come everyone thinks positive reviews are ‘biased’ and negative reviews are ‘honest’?

This guy obviously likes the phone, and he’s being honest about that.
Since when being honest about liking something doesn't expose your bias?

Here's something more for you to consider. The guy is a marketeer. He even has an article on Wikipedia dedicated to him. Here's what the article says:
Ritchie studied art in college before dropping out to pursue a career in web design and marketing... In 2010 Ritchie left a job in Enterprise software product marketing...
The guy is well-versed and cut his teeth on pushing products and whomever agenda that was paid for to push on us enough to be attractive for some major national networks to invite him as in this excerpt:
Ritchie has appeared on CNN International, MarketPlace, CBC News, and ABC15
Both interesting and ridiculous (and, of course, not for Mr. Ritchie) part is this self-description in his Facebook profile:
Apple analyst and tech critic
Means basically that you don't critique Apple, you analyse them. The criticisms are reserved for competing brands.
Even if you didn't quite feel compelled then here's the most delicious bit found in his pinned tweet which he asks others to promote by re-tweeting and sharing which is a classic marketing trick to accomplish a PR-event without spending a dime: the tweet shows Rene as Apple's marketing tool and a shill on short terms with their people.
