Also, my original is going to bring in more from ebay than the new one cost since it's in pristine condition and I have everything with it. Save your boxes people - I think that thing will get me much more money than it would have without.

No it won't.

After getting the 4 I realized what an ugly phone the 3GS was. It looks like a fat bloated ugly cousin to the 4. It made me realize also how much nicer the original is as well. I would love to buy and unopened 2g iPhone (if they even exist) and keep it as a spare since my 3GS broke. I also like the nostalgia of it. It's only been 3 years but the v1.0 software seems archaic now, but in a good way.

I'm still using the original 8GB. However it days are numbered as my everyday phone. I already have my new wireless plan in place and just waiting for more iPhone stock. I really did not like the look of the 3G/3GS however the iP4 was the one to get me to upgrade. The first iPhone is like the first iPod, it changed the tech world. Something you want to keep and not sell.

Of course he is. Just like people who never purchased an iPhone justified to themselves why they didn't. Just like poeple who did or did not purchase an iPhone 3G justified to themselves why they did that. Just like who did or did not purchase an iPhone 4 justified to themselves why the did that.

Everybody justifies to themselves about everything they do.

He's wondering if 3G/3GS/4 owners use enough of the features the first-gen doesn't have to justify spending the money to get a newer model.

I think the term is "rationalization"

I just upgraded to the 4 from the original 4 GB and love it -- 3G and the retina display are worth the $200 alone, not to mention multitasking and folders. I'm enjoying the 16 GBs, too :D I never liked the 3G and 3GS with the plastic backs but the original and the 4 are just very pretty phones.

I also have the original (8GB) iPhone. I upgraded to the iPhone4 in early July but just returned it after 3 weeks. It was a tough decision for me. Here is my input:

iPhone 4: beautiful phone and is well worth the upgrade from the original. The things I liked the most about the iPhone 4:
- much better camera w/ flash.
- video camera
- true GPS with maps (this is huge -- much better than the cell tower triangulation method that shows you somewhere within a mile circle).
- folders to put apps in
- multitasking was nice to easily switch between apps.
- 3G network faster
- Could tether to my MacBook Pro w/ the Handy Light app (doesn't work with original iPhone).

Why I took it back:
- The 3G network would "stall" at times and it would seem to load web pages about as fast as my old iPhone on Edge.
- The antenna issue: I always use a silicone case so it was not an issue for the most part. However, I found it easier to hold the iPhone 4 without a case (less slippery than the original iPhone). So when I wanted to use it "naked", I had to hold it awkwardly to avoid the antenna gap as I am left handed. When I held it normally, it bridged the antenna gap and the network speeds dropped dramatically. Note: I used speedtest app and the speeds would drop from about 1500kbs to about 300-500 kbs. This is still many times faster than the speeds I get on my original iPhone which average about 75-100kbs.
- Future resale: this is the main reason I returned it. I worried that in October Apple may have a slight modification that fixes the antenna issue. If I wanted to sell the phone in 2 years and upgrade, would I have one of the first "defective" phones.

The final reason I returned it was the fact that Apple / ATT are falling behind the competition. I have a family that all want data plans on their phones (4 phones). They would also like to have the ability to use MacBooks, iPod Touches, and future iPads with a WiFi device. I can switch to Sprint and get an Everything Data Family plan with unlimited text and data. I can also get an EVO that will act as a WiFi server and connect up to 5 devices -- all with unlimited data. Apple / ATT need to offer similar, affordable family data service.

I hope to buy an iPhone 4 again as I really liked it. However, for substantially less $$ I can give all of my family more features. I can still continue to buy & use the other Apple products I love -- MacBook Pro, iPod Touch, and future iPad.

If I was single and didn't have 4 phones/service to pay for, I would stick with the iPhone 4. My $30 a month unlimited data along with the Handy Light tether app would be fine.

It was tough the first couple days going back to my original iPhone -- especially this weekend when I needed more accurate GPS maps.

I couldn't imagine not having 3G now. Like someone said before, even email on edge takes forever. Google maps would be borderline useless.

And the camera on the 4 is incredible. Actually makes the pictures worth taking.

I would say you owe it to yourself to upgrade. Waiting 2 generations is enough.

As beautiful as the new iPhone is I actually find the original iPhone to be my favorite in terms of build. The hard plastic of 3G and 3GS was a step back. And now I have to say iPhone 4 just looks too fragile. Plus the antenna appears to be a big hardware failure (for now).

Something to be said for aluminum backing.

I loved the original, too. If they could've made another like it, with a form factor close to the ip4, it would've been perfection.

My son has his 1st gen he paid cash for in high school. He's finally gonna cave and upgrade. It's just not being supported well enough. The new display plus cameras pushed him over the upgrade edge. :D

I was kind of iffy on upgrading too, but the speed (both the 3G network and the newer hardware running the phone) and the camera are reason enough to upgrade.

I sold my first generation when the 3G came out, & I never looked back. I like the look of it, but I'm clumsy, & it dented easily. :(

This thread needs pics of the OG iPhone! I loved the design and I agree with others that the 3g and 3gs were steps backwards designwise.

I have the original in a drawer somewhere for emergencies or if something happens to my iPhone 4. Other than that, the iPhone 4 is a much better experience in 2010.

I'm still rocking my first gen iPhone (4 GB, no doubt) and, even with the release of the 4th version, I'm not quite convinced that I want to upgrade. Here's why:

1) My contract has unlimited data, enough minutes and enough texts. If I upgrade I pay more and get less. Plus, I risk signing on for two more years with AT&T when there seems to be a chance for an iPhone on another carrier. Not that I think others are any better, but I do think that competition will bring plan pricing down.

2) Although I have 4 Gb, I haven't had any desire for more. I have pages of apps and I have enough music on it for my workout every day. When I want to change it up, I just sync some different tunes. And movies? Tried to watch a movie once. Terrible. I don't see the point. Too small. No need to have them on a phone.

3) "New" features. Ya, I can't send photo texts. How many would I send? Probably none. I only get one every couple months and it's usually just a drunk person making a face. Home screen wallpapers, etc.: who cares. Face time? Don't know enough people with iPhone 4's to make it worth it, although if my lady friend got one I could see the benefit. Others? Why would I want to see you?

I do dig the better camera, the multitasking, and 3G (nope, still on edge), but is it enough?

I guess what I'm saying is that I don't think most people even use most of the features added since iPhone 1. Am I nuts?

I honestly don't think you have ANY IDEA how how big of an upgrade the iPhone 4 is to the iPhone 3G, LET ALONE THE ORIGINAL iPhone. If we have to talk you into upgrading, then you obviously haven't seen the iPhone 4 in person. And if you have, you must be blind or too poor to upgrade so you're making yourself feel better on this message board.

My wife is using her original 8g Iphone with $20 unlimited data/text plan.

She does not use it as much as I use my Iphone4 so no need to upgrade yet. Plus when she does she will have to go with a different data plan.

Still have the original iPhone as well. Waiting for the white iPhone 4 before upgrading.

Me too, but I don't know how much longer I can wait. The biggest problem is after like 30 mins of use my battery is dead. That is a real pain to keep charging like that.

Does anyone know a way to improve the battery life on my original 2G iPhone?

The only way to improve your battery life is to get the battery replaced. After about 500 charges I think the Apple site said the battery won't hold as much of a charge compared to when you first got it.

The same thing happens with iPods etc. My old 20GB U2 iPod will play for about an hour or so then needs to be plugged in
