In my experience, carrier unlocked phones always show the message (ATT and T-mobile), while factory unlocked phones (Verizon and SIM free phones) don't show the message. I'm not sure what happens with ATT and T-Mobile phones that are sold device only from the apple store

I unlocked many AT&T iphones with swiftunlocks.
I saw the message here and there but it doesn't always display it every time you restore or update.
So its not really a 100% indicator if the device is unlocked or not.
Best method is to stick a tmobile sim in and see if it activates and works with it IMO.

Ah. I never used one of the paid unlocks. Maybe there's something different about how it's entered into the server with those

Just return the TMo iPhone and get the Verizon one. Verizon one is SIM unlocked by agreement between Verizon and FCC

Not to be mean, but either the OP or TMO customer service has misunderstood this (or have poor reading /listening comprehension). That "120 countries" number is awfully similar (actually identical) to what TMO advertises as part of their unlimited international text/data for Simple Choice, not specific countries for which the phone is "unlocked." :D

For pete's sake, from now on in threads asking about unlocked phones, can people please specify WHERE they bought it from? I see that OP still hasn't answered this.

I'm sorry I can't remember the exact source but another forum member pointed out through an IMEI search before the 6 even came out that the TMO version bought from Apple would lock to TMO if first booted with TMO sim. The correct way to use the phone is to remove TMO sim, put in other SIM, then boot. Exactly like that. I think your friend screwed himself over by booting first.

Lol. An unlocked phone can't be locked again. That makes no sense.

That is not what I meant. The original source said that the phones would only become unlocked once a non TMO sim was booted. As in if the first boot has the TMO sim inside, it will stay locked to TMO.

Well OP, like everyone said. Go back and exchange it. I bought 2 T-Mobile version, 1 AT&T version and 1 Verizon version, all from Apple site and were all unlocked.

The phone is a 1000% unlocked, used it on AT&T and it was perfect. Close this thread already, it might mislead others.

I can't wait to get my two devices, I will get the first one (which apple confirmed it's unlocked) on Tuesday and I will confirm to you the status.
I will get the second one early on November (which apple said it's locked) and I will also confirm.

How could Apple tell you if it is locked or unlocked?

Hi all,

After everything I read online and the confirmation I got the t-mobile version is free, my friend went and got a phone, he turned it on for the first time in another country with the t-mobile sim on and it worked fine, after that he inserted another sim and they said that sim is invalid.

I've ordered two iphones t-mobile contract free, I've checked with apple support with the serial numbers and they confirmed that one is unlocked (which I turned on with t-mobile for the first time) and one is locked (which is still in the box)

I think this means that the phone should first be turned on with t-mobile sim in USA and be activated then we can use it anywhere else.

Any ideas here?

stop making up threads like this if you don't actually read them... the phone comes unlocked if you turn it on for the first time with the t mobile sim it locks to t mobile... so the error is on you

that's what i've gotten from reading pages and pages of t mobile threads about this

If you bought it from :apple:. com it is 100% unlocked.

Source: I have a 6 Plus and I can use both T-Mobile and my 3 sim.

Has this been proven?

bought both a 6 and 6 plus from Apple.com... tmo version. both worked with ATT sim when I opened the box. put in tmo sim a week later and it worked too.

people who specifically lined up for the launch and don't even live in the U.S did this others didn't turn it on this way and ended up with a locked device

I ask because I activated mine with the Verizon sim that came with it. Then later I went and bought a T-Mobile sim.

Hold on, first I'm not a newbie, I've been using iPhone since 2008.

Second, I understand what you say that this has been confirmed hundred times, but one thing you should know today, we've asked t-mobile and they said that :yes the device is unlocked for 120 countries, not all the countries, and after 40 days we should request a full unlock.

I understand how boring this thread is, but if you read online, you can see people from few countries still confirming it's locked.

Also, even Apple Care man said that one of my two devices is unlocked, and one is locked after checking both serial numbers.

Even more, around the web you can still read things that : you should connect it to itunes to get the message, well.. the already unlocked device is not something itunes should congratulate you for !

you can also read that you should do a full restore, not activate it with t-mobile.. etc etc... where have this solutions came from if it's not from people who experienced t-mobile locked devices?.. where did the number 40 days come from? why sometimes apple said it's locked and sometimes not and sometimes you should confirm with t-mobile?

why t-mobile said that it's locked (even when if you got it from apple) and sometimes not.

Meanwhile, I hope not to close this thread because it may put a spotlight on something we don't know.

My iPhone came financed from TMobile and is unlocked (@ least in America), was rather happy about it.

Last year, you were obligated to T-Mobile for 40 days on a certain pay as you go plan before they would unlock it. I don't know about now. I'm waiting for the official factory unlocked by Apple in Nov. If you go to the Apple site, of the 5S, you will see the option next to the contract-free T-Mobile, is the Sim-Free Version. This is the one I want.

So, how do I activate for the first time? Could I turn on without any sim? or it has to be one of foreign sim?

I ordered Tmobile 6+ from Apple and still waiting for shipping.

Thanks
