However, the argument that a new MBP would steal MBA thunder is, I think, closer to the mark. Apple do seem to put a lot of thought behind the timing of their releases and a new MBP released now would be asking for column inches comparing the two.

I would have to disagree if the only updates are penryn and the new MBA multitouch. Im sure Apple would be quite happy to let the +1000 people on this website alone who are desperate for the update go online and buy them when they hit the stores... Thats a nice quick $2.5M off the bat.

Thats what they did for the Mac Pro.
Its all about supply and demand.
The have demand for the new MBP.
I dont believe they do yet for the MBA - thats why they are spendin $$$ on MBA marketing and advertising.

Cheers
M.

Well Dell has hybrid storage as well as 2x64 raided ssd solutions available on their top line laptops already...I do not see how Apple would release anything in their pro line updated without those features, it would be just uncompetitive of them, and Apple always has over the top systems when they come out. I think not only we are talking about bumps in CPU and GPU, multitouch, keyboard(?), perhaps a small touch up improvement on the case, but SSD solutions as well, just to stay competitive, PLUS something else to actually be #1, because Apple doesnt play catch up, it actually innovates and delivers products with the WOW effect ;) Current mbp is not a bad machine, but dell's hardware on their latest models is already quite a notch above (of course who needs it if it runs vista but I digress). If we want to see a hybrid system or a raided 64GB ssds I doubt it will cost you anything even remotely close to what apple charges now for the top of the line mbpro, but who cares, if there is a significant customer base who will pay 5K+ for an mbp (as apparently it does work out for dell, they have laptops that run low $6K) why not give us what we want, only more money for :apple:
As for whether we'll see it next week or not, the general time frame between all major mbp updates were exactly 9 months, so we are most definitely approaching the time period for an update which will happen sometime before mid March I reckon.

Regarding your OP, I would agree with those in this thread that have stated the MBP and MBA are directed at two completely different target markets. There may be a few here or there that wouldn't know which to choose, but I think most people probably know what they want and when it's power and more functionality, they choose a MB or MBP. So I don't think updates to the MBP would affect MBA sales too much if at all. Either way Apple is getting our money, so does it matter which product they get it from?

The issue of creative selling is the situation. It's not that the MBP and AIR are two different machines targeting people with different needs it's all about how the human mind works.
I don't know if you have been in sales but I have been in sales for over 20 years. When something new comes out it takes the focus away from everything else.
It's not that people are allow themselves to lose focus, they just do. Apple released the Mac Pro just days before the AIR and the upgrade was pretty good. When the AIR was announced the focus on the Mac Pro went away, so much so that the AIR is all that's talked about, even focus was taken away from the iPhone thank goodness.

The AIR is a new model and new concept and when you visit Apple's website it's first thing you see and it takes up the whole page, why? because it's called creative selling. Notice that Time Capsule doesn't even show up on Apple's first web page, you have to navigate to see it and it's a new machine. Apple wants focus kept on movie rentals and the Macbook AIR. Sure we know the rentals exist but without focus sales could suffer.

Remember it's all about focus when it comes to creative selling and good business. Some of the posters here say ridiculous things like, "Apple is making money regardless so it doesn't matter what they sell". That's not true, each division has to turn a profit and selling certain products at the right time is the only way it will work.

The AIR needs time to mold into our (consumers)heads and bringing out an update to another notebook immediately after a whole new concept was just intro'd WILL take focus away from it.
The Macbook Pro will be brought out but not soon. No one has to agree with me however I am not the one waiting every Tuesday think it's gonna happen and so far it hasn't.

It would be silly to argue against creative selling, however the key to it is the time frame...creative selling isnt exactly creative after a prolonged period of time, they've introduced hot new product (air), but they cannot let the already highly established sources of revenue dwindle down, especially that air isnt a replacement product for those established lines...thus its not unreasonable to believe that 1.5-2 months time frame is enough to introduce an update for their flagship laptop model.

No. Just no.

Just because Dell sells them doesn't mean they sell well.
To do this Apple would have to do a major redesign of the MBP just for a few dozen people who would be willing to spend an extra 2 grand on top of their already well over 2 grand notebook so they can have 128GB of hard disk space. Even if it would be really, really fast. I don't see how even many true professionals would benefit from this enough to justify this excessive cost. After all, if you increase the speed of the HDD transfer, the info's just going to get caught up in a bottleneck somewhere else.

Multiple iPod size hard disks in a MBP is unlikely, especially if they are SSDs. If you want faster storage, just get the SSD manufacturer to RAID a couple of drives together and package them in the one normal notebook size hard disk case.

Apple will put SSDs in their MBPs when they decide that it is something that lots of people will buy, not just a few. And until most people are buying SSDs, Apple will not redesign the MBP to fit SSDs better and more efficiently at the expense of normal hard disks.

Yes, a SSD option is very likely in the next revision, but only as a BTO option.

There will be no GPU update. There is no realistic alternative that I am aware of. There will NOT be a 8700M or a 8800M in a MBP EVER (Extra certain on the 15"). There will be no case redesign, the only think that might happen is the MBA trackpad and keyboard, and possibly a magnetic latch. (Assuming Penryn and slightly bigger HDD)

And in terms of hybrid storage, just because it's "new" doesn't make it "better". Robson 1 failed, and that was basically hybrid storage. Same with being more expensive.

They can always leave the Macbook Air decorations and quietly update the specs on the MBP page, along with the images and description (if different).. Those looking for an MBP will find it and rejoice, I suppose.

Well, but you cannot ignore the point of apple trying to be competitive especially with their flagship model...They do deliver over the top systems on top of the great OS, thus I just dont see them being way behind Dell.

While you spend your money on a flair instead of a gym membership then praise how great it is compared to the giant immovable 15inch laptops of the past. You can download your HD movies off Itunes then delete them while telling youself that this is the future and nothing to do with the fact you can only fit one on your solidstate drive.

The flair is a good product for a specific audience, it was never intended as a desktop replacement or for a power user, My future is big drives , big gpu's and bluray burners and I can wait for it.

Sony has a new laptop (AR Series) that you might like then :)

As much as I am not too bothered that an update hasn't come, and potentially won't come for a while it is bothering me that Apple seem to be totally neglecting the computing part of their company.

This little screen shows 'new' stuff - look at the gadget/computer ratio!

I've decided to hold off my MBP gift/buy to my daughter till graduation but she needs a laptop, her 2003 Sony is almost dead....I can't wait either.....so I'm going Refurb route...I'm a recent Mac owner & haven't owned either machine....no gaming...no hard core activities....think of the user similar to the "Air"
any help??... I've been all over looking for posts but both are ordered and I need to cancel one ASAP and it will be hers until graduation then my sons in HS after...(no games either)....$100 bucks...and it could be used for the Upgrades.

A. Macbook 2.0 GHz Core Duo... Direct/Apple Refurb $ 899.00
B. Macbook 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo.....Direct/Apple Refurb $999.00

Thanks.....

12-18 year olds have more disposable income than ever and demand more and more powerful units for their internet gaming, porn, music editing, etc.

I'm sure it's a market that isn't quickly ignored.

Im sure it's nice. Though im pretty certain I want Osx this time around. I don't dislike windows, XP does most things without fuss. Current uptime 27 days. All the more reason I can wait and see what apples next mini and mbp are like.

I assume apples logic is that announcing updates would lower there sales. Look at the threads though people are not buying. Im sure the occasional oblivious buyer walks in a store without doing any research and buys whatevers on the shelf. Atleast if everyone knew the truth they could make an ecucated choice on wich version to buy. Apple could sell alot of MBP right now just by announcing theres no update for 6 months.

We can't change there policy though and the OP can't change my waiting happily waiting policy.

???

Are you calling me a 12-18 year old? 'Cause I'm 20.

Not sure I understand that post.

(Clearly everything is about me)

Two SSDs in a MBP is a great idea, and would be totally awesome, it's just not going to happen. Neither is a massive update to the MBP in the next few weeks. It's just not. It will be small. It's the truth. Or at least what I perceive to be the truth (Year 12 HSC English (Waste of time compulsory subject #1) + smatterings of The Matrix)

Keymaker: There's a building. Inside this building there's a level where no elevator can go, and no stair can reach. This level is filled with doors. These doors lead to many places, hidden places, but one door is special. One door leads to the new MBP...

;)

I will give credit to many of the MR forum members for having good business sense but the rest of you (especially age 12-18) seem to lack good business sense.

The MBA has to maintain it's presence and accumulate revenue for Apple before they release yet another revision of their current notebook line. Why doesn't anyone see that??
If Apple were to update the MBP's this week (and there's nothing wrong with the current line in the first place) next week or even this month they are trumping the MBA's spotlight. Sales would go heavily on the MBP and while many people will still buy the AIR potential revenue for it will decline since there are more choices. Apple has put $$$ toward R&D on the AIR and they will not lose money just to satisfy Penryn droolers.
Stop being naive and understand good business.

I'm pleased I was naive and didn't understand good business because I waited and now I get the Penryn MBP I wanted. Oh and they updated the MacBooks as well.

Time will tell if that completely screws the Air .. I don't think so.

HA. This post was absurd when you wrote it, and now it just seems plain ridiculous.

I dont think that argument works. As we all know the MBP update is going to fairly low key. Processor upgrade, maybe multitouch included. I don't think its a radical redesign therefore its not like Apple are gonna run new ads for it and shout about it. It'll just be added to the store one day and say that its updated. The people that are waiting for one are gonna jump on it while all the focus is still on the new product the Air.

Also 'is not releasing it' is a little strong. Never going to upgrade MBP?? i dont think so

HAHA this was the first thread I thought of yesterday as they were released! I do believe I or "we" were spot on!

PS i hope your not in the business world;)

Kind of naive to think Apple wouldn't release an interim Penyrn model.. you've got to look at the Intel / Apple history. The answer was in your face, but some people chose to ignore it.
