So who came up with this term or label?

It was bourn out of a song by Minor Threat called Straight Edge.

And why do people who are abstaining from all these things need to group together anyways? I realize that I seem to have missed the whole peer pressure thing while growing up, but I would hope that people would be able to abstain from these types of things based on an informed choice rather than to fit into some group.

Only speaking for myself here. I don't need to fit into a group, in fact I don't know a single other person who is. Without going into detail I found myself needing a way out and the ideas coming out of the movement seemed to chime with me.

Ah... is that the source of the x's topping and tailing your username or have I got hold of the wrong end of the stick totally?

That is indeed where they come from. xUnited Kingdom Hardcore x , however some people on here like to add them without knowing so don't assume that someone with x's is.

Such individuals used to be abusively labeled "squares." Like any other oppressed minority (and in high school and college, such people are absolutely treated as if there is something wrong with them) they are attempting to stick together for mutual support and reframe themselves with some measure of pride. And like any other such group, some of them can be quite shrill and tiresome about it.

I admit to having wine occasionally despite being underage (20), as my mom is Italian, but it's always moderated.

I always find the American drinking laws to be a bit odd. In the UK you would never hear an adult guiltily admitting to having a bit of wine. I think you'll be okay with a bit of wine at 20.

I myself don't really feel part of a particular group or scene. I was probably considered 'alternative' at school/college but I just sorta grew out of it. I am happy being me. Drinking doesn't define who I am, nor my musical taste etc. I don't even affiliate myself with a particular political party. I think that pretty much everyone I know falls into this middle ground.

I don't think he stayed edge for very long, which is ironic considering he "started" the straight edge movement.

They had another song entitled straight edge. Lyrics here: http://www.lyricsdomain.com/13/minor_threat/straight_edge.html Don't feel like censoring out the curse words.

I can't believe I still remember these lyrics after all these years, ha.
